From a legal perspective, it seems very likely that these files create increased copyright liability for Google, because the state of our current copyright law doesn't make exceptions for how source code trees work, or whether or not a script pasted in a different license, or whether these files made it into handsets. The single most relevant legal question is whether or not copying and distributing these files was authorized by Oracle, and the answer clearly appears to be "nope" -- even if Oracle licensed the code under the GPL. Why? Because somewhere along the line, Google took Oracle's code, replaced the GPL language with the incompatible Apache Open Source License, and distributed the code under that license publicly. That's all it takes -- if Google violated the GPL by changing the license, it also infringed Oracle's underlying copyright. It doesn't matter if a Google employee, a script, a robot, or Eric Schmidt's cat made the change -- once you've created or distributed an unauthorized copy, you're liable for infringement.*

blizz's statement from the modders site (which i expect will be getting a new domain name shortly)
    http://worldofstarcraft.org/

    Full statement:

“Earlier this week, a player-made StarCraft II mod called World of StarCraft and described as a “StarCraft MMO” was featured on a number of prominent gaming news sites, catching the attention of gamers as well as our own. With the name so closely resembling that of World of Warcraft, we wanted to discuss the title of the mod with the developer, and as part of our routine procedure, we contacted YouTube to request the video be removed while that discussion took place. We were also curious about the project and wanted to discuss with the developer what the mod entailed.

It was never our intention to stop development on the mod or discourage the community from expressing their creativity through the StarCraft II editor. As always, we actively encourage development of custom maps and mods for StarCraft II, as we’ve done with our strategy games in the past. That’s why we release an editor with our RTS games, and why we feature top player-created content in the custom game search. It’s also why we held a contest to spotlight the best community-crafted StarCraft II mods at last year’s BlizzCon, and why we’ll continue to improve Battle.net to better showcase player-created content.

Like many players in the community, we’re looking forward to seeing the continued development of this mod, and as part of our ongoing discussion, we’ve extended an offer to the developer to visit the Blizzard campus and meet with the StarCraft II development team. As always, we appreciate all of the efforts of the talented and enthusiastic mod-making community, and we look forward to seeing and playing what they create using the StarCraft II editor in the future.”

volvo's pretty smart.. i'm sure they've thought of it.. afterall, I think Volvos and Mercedes have collision detection.. meaning the car will stop automatically if you come to close to the car in front of you or something.

a PHYSICAL connection is... well.. how do you JOIN/LEAVE the convoy? I assume you're talking about a rigid connection so they all move at the same speed?.. but what to do to join.. pull everyone over so you can literally hook up? or everyone has have the same origination/destination? that's useless. even if it was just a cable, you have the same problem.. everybody stop.. i have to pee? everybody stop, this is my exit? you need to be able to join/leave w/o impacting everyone else.

I'd rather have a computer take over in the event of a blowout, because most humans will overcompensate (steering).. which is where the real problem lies - swerving into oncoming traffic, etc. computers are fast and efficient and can execute instruction w/o freaking out (stay in your lane and come to a controlled stop) there's no reason a computer can't maintain a safe interval (relative to speed). rule of thumb is one car length per every 10mph, if a computer was in control, you could probably cut that in half (which is where the fuel savings may come in... you can feel the strain on your engine drop if you're using cruise control and you pull into the wake of the semi in front of you)

biggest barrier i see is the hardware required.. not every car has cruise control, and no commercial vehicle I know of has any automatic steering.. it's new cars or factory retrofit... for everyone. I won't trust the jiffylube guys to install auto-pilot for me.

logistical problems of a pysical connection is why you've been thinking about it for 25 years, whereas volvo's built something.
