  1. Something that always puzzles me.. on New Developments From Microsoft Research · · Score: 1

When developing something like this (ie. the covert rootkit eliminator), why do people always broadcast it as loudly and as far as they possibly can? Wouldn't keeping it super-top-secret be more effective at stopping rootkits?

Yeah, I know.. my code sample does completely suck. However, since Slashdot's fancy new Web 2.0 redesign doesn't include any comment-modification capabilities, I'm holding them partially responsible.

I have a few questions/points (and I'm not trying to start a flame war):
    1. I thought the theory of evolution revolved around land creatures evolving from sea creatures, not the other way around.
    2. If dolphins really did evolve from land creatures with four legs, why would they start devolving all of a sudden?
    3. Isn't it possible that the secondary set of fins is actually a mutation or disorder caused by all the crap we've been dumping into the ocean?

I've skimmed the comments here and the article, but AFAIC the possibility of it being something other than evolution doesn't seem to have been considered.

What they need to do is redesign the formatting tools, especially in setting colours. It seriously sucks. I shouldn't have to delve deep into the program options to apply a specific colour to a style (a colour selector or the like wouldn't go astray there either).

More sad than funny. I remember visiting 5 computer shops in the large town (50,000+) in which I reside in during semester, looking for a copy of Fedora Core, and none of them had any other OS in stock than Windows. One owner even told me that Linux was a dirty word in his store. I was slighly flabbergasted.

I've been using OpenOffice 2.0 betas and RCs for about 5 or 6 months, and the only gripe I have with it (apart from the occasional crashes) are that it's noticably slower than Word 2003. However, that probably has something to do with my aging Duron 1200+.

I've been sitting here in my room in Australia reading the articles and comments posted here with some amazement. I can't believe kids would actually be expelled or arrested for merely modifying the software on a computer, even to the extent that it has to wiped clean and everything re-installed.

At my high school my friends and I caused the network admin a fair amount of grief. I remember a friend intentionally infected a computer with a virus and went on a ctrl-a > del spree through C drive on more then one computer, we stole and decrypted students and teachers password hashes, and once a guy sitting at the computer across from me flipped the wattage control switch on the PSU of the computer I was using and blew it up, and the worst that happened to us (when we were caught) was expulsion from the library for the day.
