  1. Contradiction on Top 10 System Administrator Truths · · Score: 1

I like how he contradicts himself with #7 and #9. Use Linux over Microsoft and you will save money...NO...use Linux over Microsoft and you will be fired!

"#7 - No One Ever Got Fired For Buying Microsoft
So sad but so true. This old saying used to reference IBM, but oh how times have changed. Linux may be powerful, but the command prompt and configuration files and filesystem obscurity will just as soon get you a pink slip if something goes wrong and no one knows how to fix it but yourself. Even so, with as much stupid crap as we admins have to put up with on a daily basis, configuring some of the 'high end' Microsoft software is enough to drive you insane. Ever tried installing Exchange Server or, worse, installing Exchange Server and migrating a 5.5 install to Exchange 2000? I feel your pain, oh how I feel your pain."

    "#9 - Know Your Needs
This one could also be called "Learn Linux." Many admins get wooed into the idea that "managed solutions" are always the correct ones. A web interface on a switch is cute, but rarely useful. A huge Cisco router may not always be necessary, sometimes a 'lo-fi' approach is best. When you want a spam solution, before looking at $5,000 servers and huge licensing fees for Windows Server software take a look at one of those old 'junk' PCs you have in the closet, download your favorite distro of Linux, and install procmail and spamassassin. You (and your budget) will thank me later."

How am I a troll for pointing out a fact that many people in the gaming community are talking about? Saying the better graphic whould be nice, doesn't not make me a "graphics whore", as one person here said.

While I will be the first to say that graphics to not equal great gameplay, there is no doubt that graphics are important to gamers. The reason so may gamers are drooling over Doom 3 is the graphics (and it is from id). The reason we go out and buy the latest consoles and graphic cards if for great graphic. Nobody who has a newer console or graphics card can honestly say they don't care about graphics.

I know my karma will be punished for saying this, but I have to say it anyways.

It's kind of sad that they puchased Cobalt for $2 billion, not too long ago, and now they're discontinuing the Cobalt line. That's $2 billion down the drain. When Sun is making business decisions like this, it's hard to image them being a major force in the computer industry for much longer.

    GROW UP!!!!!

I'm a KDE fan, and I often check out kde-look.org to look for nice new ways to improve that way my desktop look. What I have noticed on there is that a large number of theme, icons, and whatever are designed to make KDE look more like WinXP or OS X, and everybody seems to love them. So nobody has a problem with making Linux look and act like a different OS, but everybody has a problem with it when somebody decides to make one Linux desktop look like another Linux desktop? I can't believe this is even an issue.

I have to say I'm really disappointed that my fellow Linux and Unix users would get upset about something that is so irrelevant. There are much more important things about...like stopping this childish desktop war. If you like KDE, use KDE. If you like GNOME, use GNOME. If you don't like the icons or styles that Red Hat included with their distro, then change the damn thing. There's no need to cry about it.

Excellent point. Slashdot readers are generally a smart bunch. We know everything about computers, and it all seems so easy to us. But sometimes we forget that not all people are as quite as computer savvy. I mean the vast majority of people out there have absolutely no idea what libraries or compilers are. While I may like to compile my own apps and play with code, almost everyone that I know just wants to be able to sit in front of a computer, do whatever work they need to do, and nothing else. They don't want to play with what's under the hood. Helix Code is obviously aiming this product at those normal everyday people, and not people like you and I. They're trying to make Linux usable for more people. And from what I've seen, they've done a good job at it.

I just feel that it's really interesting to see Gnome getting so much support lately. This should be a really nice product when it's done. I've been using Gnome 1.1.5 (which is what this thing really is) ever since it came out a few days ago, and let me tell you Gnome is definitely maturing. One of the greatest criticisms of Gnome in the past has been that it's too unstable. And the critics were right...Gnome was too unstable. Well, it's good to see that this "unstable" 1.1.5 version of Gnome seems to be the most stable Gnome to date. I've been torturing it for a few days now, and I can't get it to give in. Other than one bug in the panel, I personally have yet to see anything wrong with this release.

That's a excellent point that I wanted to bring up as well. There's a Macmillan ad being played on ZDTV probably at least once during each show, if not multiple times per show. Macmillan now also sponsors ZDTV's most popular show "The Screen Savers". And if you watch that show, you'll notice that the host, Leo Laporte, recommends Macmillan's Linux Mandrake over and over and over. However, before the Macmillan ads started on ZDTV, he recommended Red Hat. Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against Mr. Laporte. In fact I think that he does a great job on the show. But I can't help but to think that he's recommending Mandrake so much only because ZDTV and Macmillan tell him to.
