I'm almost 60. I've been writing software for 40years. I've just landed a job that is pretty close to my dream job. Everything on my CV points to this job being 'the one'. Very few people under 50 would have anywhere near the varied experience needed for this job.
Build a wall right round the country and stop all people and trade crossing it's borders.
You certainly don't welcome us Foreigners to your shores these days. We are all regarded as Terrorists until proven innocent. I say this as an employee of an American Company. I get more smiles getting into Russia than I do trying to enter the US.
I used to visit the US regularly on Holiday. Not now. That is your loss of foreign income. I think I'll go to Greece next year. They are far more welcoming that you lot.
50% of the Freshmen don't understand that before signing up to the frigging course.
I was a freshman in 1972. I kenw I wanted to be an Engineer. 50% of my class were like me. The other 50% didn't have a clue. They all either dropped out or failed the exams at the end of the 1st year. All those who passed the 1st year graduated 2yrs later.
I didn't go to school in the US but the UK. I didn't go to University but to Polytechnic. I'd already completed a 4yr apprenticeship in Mech Eng before going to study for my degree. So yes I knew what I wanted to do. Most undergrads these days don't.
When I graduated, I got a job designing Aircraft Autopilots. (I did Control Eng). A graduate of today couldn't do that. The courses have been dumded down so much that they don't have a clue what a Characteristic Equation or a Root Locus Diagram or a Lapalace Transform is.
So when I retire in a few years, my experience will be lost. Sadly the crop of current gradiates are totally lacking in problem solving techniques. You can't learn that from lectures. Only pratical experiences will help. Classes of 100+ students won't give you that.
When I interview Grads, I find them totally lacking in really key skills. Skills that are needed to make them employable. Engineering is Frigging Hard!
I did my back in some thirty years ago in a car accident. The result is that I can't sit in a conventional chair for very long. I use a kneeling chair at home and in the office. Google for them. They have improved my posture.
Then get your monitor heght adjusted properly. The middle of the screen should be at the same height as your eyeballs.
Then, as has been suggested, get a decent keyboard. I'm currently using a SteelSeries 6Gv2. Don't skimp on a KB. the keys need to give your finger proper feedback.
Oh, and I've been programming since 1972 and so far (touch wood) I don't have any RSI.
you won't regret taking care of your back, eyes and hands.
If you think back to the introduction of Netbooks, the first models were all running Linux.
Microsoft soon said, 'we can't be letting you do that'. They introduced a slimline XP plus putting limits on the CPU, RAM etc that could go into a Netbook and qualify for the almost free XP licenses.
Fast forward to 2011. Nokia is in deep do-do. I is losing market share hand over fist. The shareholders have seen their investment plummet. They want to get out with something before the share price hits zero. Nokia has this nice little agreement with Mictosoft over WP7. This hasn't stopped the slide in market share or the slide in the share price. Nokia are IMHO getting desperate. Result is to publicly start developing anothe Linux based phone O/S in the hope of making MS a tad pissed off with their now errant love child. All thay want is for MS in the shape of Mr Balmer to call his old chop Mr Elop and tell him that he is being a very naughty boy and that Boss Steve Balmer won't be letting Nokia do this silly thing and offer to buy Nokia outright.
Then the shareholders will get something. Mr Elop will get a whole wad of cash and a seat on the Microsoft board. The employes? The dole queue for 90%.
If you install your legally bought copy of OSX on some non apple hardware then probably yes it is illegal. However,
making your own hackingtosh is not going to worry Apple. The words 'small fry' come to mind. Paystar were trying to make a business out of it. That was big enough to get Apple's attention.
In some ways this is similar to HP. you can get a 'hobby' license for VMS for free. Use that free copy of VMS on a commercial venture and the HP lawyers will be after you.
In some ways this is similar to Oracle. you can download a copy of their RDBMS for free. Use that copy in a production environment and Oracle's lawyer will be after you.
A lot of people are having real issues with them, myself included. I unzipped a.tgz file to it and a few files were present but had zero contents. Repeating the same command to a notmal drive and it worked fine.
Remember the price quoted in GBP includes VAT and all import Taxes. The US price is without any sales Tax.
Still, even taking those factors into consideration, the price is still rather high. I guess the $1 == £1 rule still applies. rather than £1.60 == £1.00approx
Apple (and Dell, HP, etc etc) could work with these companies to clean up their act.
Just dropping them as a supplier is probably the worst thing they could do. The company would probably just close down, move to a new city and open up under another name and carry on as if nothnig had happened.
The diversity of the android market is a strong point. The fragmentation is also its biggest weakness.
Given that Android can match the Apple Platform in terms of Hardware and are pretty well on a par with the software why do Android makers act the way they do?
What do I mean?
Well
- The lack of updates. How many posts do you see where people complain that maker xxx won't upgrade their device.
Look at Apple's history with IOS. They don't abandon a device until it has been replaced by at least two models. Android makers? Well many Android devices are using software that is frankly obsolete by the time you buy the device and the maker has already moved onto another release of Android and left your newly purchased device in the dust for dead. This IMHO is not sustainable You might argue that people can root their device and install an unsupported version of android. Well, aside from the fact that MOST people are not geeks and would even consider such a move, by doing so that have plainly thrown any warranty validity right out the window. If you treat a tablet as an Appliance much like your Washing Machine do you purposley go out to invalidate the warranty? I'd be willing to wager that 90% of consumers wouldn't. Again the Apple business model wins. You buy one in the full knowlege that the IOS updates will come out and you can install them at will. The Android market needs to get its act in order. This direction can only come from Google. Sadly this direction seems to be totally absent because they want to keep the market diverse. See, Strength & Weakness in the same breath.
I designed and built a Class 'A' amp (30w/channel) in 1972. It is paired with some 1970's era Quads. The sound is beautiful and rich. I made the case, etched the circuit boards, machined the heatsinks and turned the knobs out of Stainless. It was my apprentice piece. Todays systems are just awful by comparison.Far too much emphasis on distored Bass (IMHO).
The ones sold by Walwart, ASDA etc but the truckload. The ones priced at less than $150/£100.
IMHO, the Tablet/fondleslab market should be segmented. At the top, things like the Playbook, Galaxy Tab and iPad. etc etc. Then we might get some more realistic figures especially if the measurements were done by units sold rather than shipped.
There are far more usable and frankly higher quality distros than anything that comes from Canonical.
I'll probably be shot down in flames but as a long term linux supporter (since slackware 1.1 on Floppies) I've seen it evolve beyond all recognition. At first Ubuntu was a breath of freah air. It took the debian dinosaur and shook it alive. Now, they are changing things and IMHO not taking the user base with them. I know of at least 10 former Ubuntu fans who have jumped ship since 10.10 came out. The quality is just not there any more. Far too much is crammed into each release with little thought for fixing the bugs. Non of their stuff seems complete. Or in agile dev speak, 'It is not done.' This is totally wrong and is only storing up a vast reservior of technial debt for the future.
Let the flaming begin. Anon coz I have to work closely with Canonical in my day job.
Step 2, MS get their paid for lackeys (sorry congress critters) to outlaw any VOIP solution that does not allow Police Interception and specifically required this tech
Step 3, Enforcement. MS-Skype becomes the only legal VOIP solution in the US. ISP's are madated to block any other type of VOIP traffic.
Step 4, MS raises the price of MS-Skype by 500% per minute. Profit.
Citation Needed.
I am sure that many people here would like to know how you equate Ad-blocking with supporting SOPA?
Come on please tell us.
After all they will all be 'queueing up' to vent their spleen won't they?

Linux is a threat ONLY to Microsoft. Their Annual report is the the world view according to MS and ONLY MS.
What about RedHat? A US company who sells FREE software all over the world.
Oh, and they should break the $1B this year.

Gnome to Beta Hell maybe?
Geddit?

Coz if they did MS would sue, sue and sue again.
Anyway, what's wrong with bash then?

There is another option.
Apple (and Dell, HP, etc etc) could work with these companies to clean up their act.
Just dropping them as a supplier is probably the worst thing they could do. The company would probably just close down, move to a new city and open up under another name and carry on as if nothnig had happened.
The only winners are the Lawyers.
Until these endless lawsuits stop Software won't eat the world.
But hey, being able to sue anyone else for a billion dollars over something trivial is the American way right?
Other parts of the world will move on and leave the US to carry on sinking in the quicksand of you sue me, I sue you.
Very soon you will start seeing software packages marked 'Not for sale or use in the USA'.
He does except for Steve Jobs or Steve Balmer or Larry (get off my boat) Ellison.

You don't need 1Kw to make music sound nice.
B&N in their infite wisdom have not seen fit to sell it into a bigger market that is open to them.
viz Europe.
330Million People.
So your statement should read.
The Nook Color seems to be selling well in the US. Shame that the rest of the world do not get a look it.

and I see a squadron of Gloucester Old Spot Pigs flying in formation over London Heathrow Airport as I type this.
