And be only availabe with the Windows Ultimate edition thus forcing users into an expensive upgrade. They have to get that whole shed load of money back somehow don't they?
In my part of the world this means more than FIXME
It is all the stuff that gets put on the black hole called a 'Todo list'. You know the stuff that never gets done. Thus you never get 'To Done'. The code isn't finished.
Exactly. That is why I'd tell every Ubuntu dev to stop work and read these articles and other related ones. http://www.43folders.com/2006/10/17/robert-peake-part-one GTD (Getting Things/To Done) is really important. I don't think Canonical understand this at all. They should stop all new features and then just put their 6month sprint into bug fixing and producing CLEAN CODE (another Agile dev mantra)

That might be true in your place of work. IT is very different where I work. There are people developing iPad apps for the salesforce. They love the iPad. The instant on is a big selling point when they get in front of customers. No more lugging a thinkpad around. I use a Macbook pro. I have two Linux VM's and a rarely used Windows one. Since the IT dept got our mobiles & Mac's hooked up to the email system I really have no need to use windows and more.
Granted many of the devs are still using old Thinkpad T31's but when they come up for replacement they will be gone. The choice will be Linux or OSX. This is in a company in the Thames Valley.
It's Windows. Therefore we MUST Charge the same as we do for the X86 version
On the otherhand
It's Windows but we have to compete with OS's that are essentially given away. (Android & iOS) So we have to give it away.
If the ydid that and for some really strange reason it took off then the MS share price would plummet like a stone. In an instant one of their cash cows has gone. Cue throwing of chairs in Redmond.
So when i say I'm going from Washington to Denver by road and it takes less than 4 hours. Or I'm going from London to Paris by road and it takes less than an hour. What countries am I in?
Don't buy a house with a MORTGAGE greater than 3X your annual income.
I live in a house valued at £300K. That is almost SIX times my income. So according to your 'rule' I'd be overextended. However:- re wording it. I live in a house valued at £300k. I have a Mortgage of £50K. That is less than my annual income.
Ah yes. FM is there in force. Does he not realise that by always having to get the last word in weakens his position?
Then he has the gall to call Linus just plain Torvalds. IMHO, every time he writes that it must be through gritted teeth. (There is not need to reply FM. You really don't have anything worthwhile to add to the debate. It has been said already.)
I've telecommuted for 5 of the past 6 years. I've saved thousands of Pounds on the commute into London. I can spend more time in the morning in bed. But You have to be comfortable with your own company. It can get lonely. You need the heating on all day in Winter.
On the whole it is great. Now... If I had a job it would be great. If said job offered me the opportunity to work from home then even better At the moment, this is all wishful thinking though.
Been there tried that. The acid in the dried cat pee has really messed it up. There are complete sections where there is no audbile output. Even warm water hasn't shifed it all. Still the devil didn't get my mono copy of St Pepper. That is worth a few ££££
The quality of the software that processes the data coming from the sensor is vitally important to the quality of the image produced. This has been amply demonstrated by some DSLR's that use the same Sensor and almost identical quality lenses only to have a vast difference in the quality (bokeh) of the resulting image. This is why you pay lots of $$$$ to the likes of Nikon & Canon and less to Sony especially as Sony make most of the Nikon DSLR Sensors.
more than 7 years ago I purchased a Hercules 80Gb mp3(256Kbit recording) device. It has Line-in recording (for turn tables), A CD drive so you can play and rip CD's. It also has USB so that you can copy the files to another device. I got it from Richter Sounds in Reading at one of their open box sales. Great device.
The device that has been banned is really nowt new at all. I suppose my bit of kit is illegal too..?
The ban is all down to the Music industry seeing their grim reaper on the horizon. FWIW, I've been buying lots of 12in disks the past few years and digitising them. Listening to some classic 60's albums has reawakend my interest in Music but in the main there is hardly anything coming onto the market now as a New Release (As opposed to a re-issue) that interests me then I'll stick to 50's->70's Rock, Blues & Jazz thank you very much. If any/. reader has a CD of the Beaver & Krause Album 'All Good Men' then I'd be interested in purchasing it. The Cat peed over my 12in Album and side 2 is ruined.
you (and almost everyone here) forget that MS in its infinte wisdom did not even launch let alone promote the Zune in Europe. wtf? If it was such a hot music player why on earth didn't hey do that. Did they offer it in Asia? Did they offer it in S. America?
The Zune was a failure full stop. It might have had some advantages over the iPod but when the majority of the worlds population can't buy one then it has to be regarded as a failure. MS never explained why they didn't launch it worldwide.
Please explain how an SD card slot is anything more that useless to me. My DSLR (Nikon D3x) uses CF Cards
Personally, I don't give a toss about the slots. IMHO they are just more places to gather dust. The iPad camera connection kit works fine enough as does the Camera Control App. I use it all the time in the studio.
If you mean Oracle's Open Office then maybe but I'm sure that some people here would like you to elaborate on why you think so.. However there is LibreOffice. How does that stack up in your world?
Mint is the exception to the rule in the Ubuntu camp. IMHO, it is what LTS should be. That only my opinion though. My personal sticking point is the Six monthly re-release. Yeah, I know I get that with Fedora.. But all my essential systems are CentOS or SLES. CentOS 5.0 was installed on one box and just applying the updates (no re-installs) is identical to the latest 5.5 + patches. That is what I mean by stable (2.6.18 kernel) over years.
perhaps you should be using something that is a tad more stable. Debian or perhaps (here comes the heresy) CentOS? you certainly don't get 100Mb a week of updates with CentOS. I sometimes get my updates over 3G...
Who cares? Well Balmer Boy seems to want to get in on the act (or is that the 'arm'?) The longer it doesn't the better it is (IMHO). I'd love to see how Windoze 7 runs on a P2 equivalent. Pretty abysmal I'll bet. If there are 5billion ARM Cpu's shipped a year then who needs Microsoft to ship a few thousand extra units at a cost for the software alone that will probably be at least triple the H/W costs when you can get Android or half a dozen other Linux based distros at zero cost.
And be only availabe with the Windows Ultimate edition thus forcing users into an expensive upgrade.
They have to get that whole shed load of money back somehow don't they?

Kudos for posting her Uncle Bob. I've seen one of your 'shows'. The only thing I can say is 'Sport On the Nail'.
I do find many agile devs are verging on the Fanatical. This is rather sad IMHO. There are some good ideas BUT taken too far they are overkill.
I prefer the mantra, "Do it right, Do it once."
Exactly. That is why I'd tell every Ubuntu dev to stop work and read these articles and other related ones.

So download it, try it and then come back here with the answer to your questions.
As an aside, FC4 is regarded by many as a 'bum' release.

and that is the 7ft 0.25in of Brunel's GWR.
anything else is just a sham.
At least with Fedora you get a choice of Gnome, KDE and others all in the same install (as long as you install from the DVD)
I use Gnome 2 most of the time but I'm moving to XFCE as Gnome 3 is nearly as bad as Unity (or should that be 'disunity?')
'Surely your'e joking Mr Feneyman'
A darn good read.
