As far as I know, Windows never had any successful copy protection since this year. Before Windows XP, I had never paid for a copy of Windows OR Office (since Win 3.11). No one I know has. Yet, they managed to become the biggest company the world has ever seen. Now how could THAT happen?
Figure this. You have a $29,95 product. Let's say that there are 1 billion computer users in the world. If you product appeals to only 0,1% of them, that's potentially 1 million customers. Out of this, only 10% are interested to acquire your product instead of the competition. In the end, if only 1% the remaining customers decide to pay for it, that's approximately 300,000$ in your pocket.
Okay, that's a pretty crude example, but you get the picture.
I suscribed as a Dell affiliate. I tell people with old Win 98/ME that they need a new computer.
I can usually pull out a $600 - $800 machine with 3 years guarantee (without monitor) and get a 1% commission on the sale. And they can call the Dell Call Center instead of me if they have any kind of trouble.
As for close friends, I usually take a look at theitr comuter in exchange of a free meal.
I live in Montreal, Quebec. Half the population in Montreal speaks English as well as any other Canadian.
We have a call center here in Montreal. We answer in five languages. English, French, Chinese, Japanese and Arab. The same call center located in Toronto answers in English only. Agents in Toronto even get a salary bonus if they can answer in something else.
Beleive me, English speaking people have a hard time learning any other language. That's because English is a pretty simple language. As soon as a little complexity is invloved, they generally abandon saying how useless it is to speak anything besides English.
Three major cities are affected by offshoring in Canada: Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal. Don't worry, our French accent is nothing compared to France! The fact that Quebec is next to America gives us the ability to speak English better than French people in France.
Transfer the extra warmth from Earth to Mars. Bye Bye global warming.
