Like to see them get around that, even if your goods are out of warranty or service you still have statutory rights that last much longer. http://sogahub.tradingstandard... If a critics bug l but was found in firmware that was there from day 1 or introduced by them while fixing other problems then they would have to fix it or be in breach of the sales of goods act and technically no time limit that only starts when a fault is discovered. If you wanted new or added features then they would not have to provide them under SOGA. Loads of info here http://sogahub.tradingstandard...

Definitely - physical copies need to be stored in library's around the world. Paper/Papyrus seems to last well, if cared for but are there better things we can do today (Difficult to prove without a few thousand years to test). If we have an event that retrogrades our knowledge base all the on-line, on CD, hard drive becomes inaccessible. Even language may change, that's why it's even more important that the Oxford dictionary has physical form as it would be a lexicon to translating other works. Yes to on-line, and good for them if they make money as it must cost a lot to produce, but only if there are many archived physical copes also made around the world. If these are few they they need to be in a form that is as secure against time and loss of knowledge as possible. (off top of head, laser cut into stainless steel or even better platinum)

In IT this frequently seen hot topic "X" earning big money so loads of people train in it and it becomes a cheaper skill and now "Y" is the new hot topic as "X" is now mainstream. Go with what interests you but keep an eye on the horizon for new things and check them out and chase if they interest you. This will give you the best chance of being in the right place with the right skills. My personal opinion is if your interested in then "Financial Mathematics" do it and it may be a good chance of being "Hot", if because of current problems few people will take this problem so 3-5 years down the line this may be a scarce skill

There seems to be a lot of this type of thing around at the moment. But compare with IBM's AS400's single level storage (is it not the same - or so similar as makes no difference). Same with virtual machines - VM on the Mainframe anyone was there years before. Most of the new things seem to be old big iron software working on new chips. As someone who started on microprocessors then went to big iron (360), minis (AS400) back to pc and now back into unix big iron and now visualization is the big thing. It makes me laugh, - but then again as an on the ground techy no one listens and to change from centralized to decentralized and back again works wonders for consultants revenues. Where I work we have huge mainframes but no one thinks of putting "new stuff on them". We also have huge numbers of unix boxes with huge updating problems and so on and so on. What annoys me is so called "old tech" is rejected when it may be the best as what it can do is not understood management, also old tech is stuck to as management are unwilling to change. It's a lose, lose situation for business but a win, win situation for consultants. As most consultants maximize there revenue with partnership deals and generally rely on graduates that do not understand the capabilities of in place systems.

What is the chemical, what is it's effect, what is it's in conjunction with effect with other chemicals - many of these questions do not yet have an answer especially when chemicals are considered in combination. As far as contamination of our water supplies goes, I'm more concerned about the hormonal effects on animals (including humans) than traces of medicines - and as for general bottled water (unless for portability, or carbonation) give me good quality tap water. The rubbish you read filtered by ice/volcanoes, purified n zillion times etc, etc - if you want pure water drink distilled water - it cheap and available from a pharmacist near you - unfortunately it does not taste of anything but water. You want carbonation - get a soda siphon! There are some unu8sual waters out there (generally with a high mineral content) that I could say could be sold on taste but the majority seem to be "pure" and in taste tests "Tap" water in London is always in the top three. Yes in good restaurant's as someone from the UK (thought of as one of the worst food places in Europe until recently) when I lived in the US that food was over sweet, pover salted, oversized and over processed. It should all be taken to "The French Laundry" and washed out. It's going the same way in Europe as well with the UK head of the pack with the increase of ready and processed meals/snacks.

"Sorry, sanitation gets the prize for most effective medical intervention." I didn't consider sanitation as a medical intervention (I was thinking pills, surgery, something you would get from a doctor and a lot of disease caused by poor sanitation can be prevented by vaccination). However if you consider sanitation medical then your probably right but both have brought huge benefits in saving life. The point I wanted to make is that vaccination is very different to antibiotics/antivirals, vaccines do not lead to super bugs and while they have their risks in general, especially for the established ones, these far outweigh any disadvantage.

And if you use a "Form request Form" not issued to you then you have violated official's procedures so MUST be an enemy of the computer and enemy of the state. The game is great fun but since 9/11 and Blair/Bush and how they are trashing our rights some of it is coming true.

I have always voted Labour (or tactical for Liberal Democrats) now I will not, I will vote for the party that will defend our civil liberties and if that had to be Conservative then so be it. What really annoys me is that most of these measures, compared to past terrorist activity 9/11, 7/7 would not prevent it. They just help the government track us. With a benign government fine but if the government become evil the scope of the laws proposed give frightening powers. And tie ID cards to credit/bank cards, mobile phones, oyster cards (used on London transport) they know where you are, who you are, what you bought and it could end up as "Sorry sir can you accompany me as you don't believe in Intelligent design" The Pet Shop Boys did a great song "Integral" that summed it up, some of the lyrics are below. It even inspired me to do a video mash up of PSB's and Dr Who (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=578LISMNAPo/) Integral - Pet shop Boys:- [Chorus] If you've done nothing wrong, you've got nothing to fear. Isn't the employer/manager the problem? If they demand 9 -5 minimum then your stuck in the rat race. I'm a late bod, but can do early if I must, but I've been on teams where my equivalent turned up at 7:30am and would leave around 3:30 pm, me I wander in around 10:30 and leave at 6:00pm or when the work was done. No overtime payments etc. However one company I worked for (at they time I was an IBM Sys Prog) we had a new (read green with no idea)d manager who decided to clamp down and demand we worked core hours - giggle - The result was paralysis, huge overtime payments and delays. For example, before we could swap overtime for time off in lieu but if we have to be in the office 9 -5 and as a sys prog al lot of work had to be out of hours so costs went up. When problems happened because of the 9-5 rule if you were in before or after those hours you would have to wait (work to a rule can be fun). That manager left (some psychotic problem I think - joke) as he didn't understand the main point of it all - get the job done. Yes I can be in the office at 7am but if I know the courier with the specs isn't turning up till 11am and apart from management ego what is the point! I've had brilliant managers who understand this and also complete prats who are ego and marker driven I,e. the project manager says start to develop at 9am with anticipated specs at 9am but they know the specs will be late and still get the developers in as it's a tick on there spread sheet - sick. Do what works is my motto. I may work a 15 hour day or a 5 hour day - do the job thats what counts. (But if your doing more than 12 hours a day for 14 days in a row - STOP - it works for 2 weeks after that your doing 12 hours work for 8 hours real work - look at extreme programming those guidelines are thee for a reason)
