I never meant to imply that the ports system was perfect - in fact, I prefer Gentoo's portage over it, and am working on getting it installed on our OS X server.
But yes, there's MUCH room for improvement in the "ports" system, but the concept is sound, and the idea of a system that builds the dependencies for you is great, IMHO.
One problem with an open InSoc is the potential development of a police state.
People break laws they don't agree with every day - including speeding, using illegal drugs (as opposed to legal ones), refusing to mow their laws, etc.
With no privacy, the American police system will either fail miserably, or will over-compensate, and we'll have no privacy AND no freedom.
I wish we COULD live in a society where one could do what they wanted, and no one questioned it, so long as what you do doesn't infringe upon another's rights to do what THEY want. This means murder would still be illegal, as would many other things we already consider "wrong".
The problem comes in with laws that criminalize "victimless" actions. I know, there's no such thing as a victimless crime, but personal choice, such as sexuality and drug use should be something society shuns, not something the government criminalizes.
W.M.D. n : a weapon that kills or injures civilian as well as military personnel (nuclear and chemical and biological weapons) [syn: weapon of mass destruction, WMD, W.M.D.]
You, claiming to know TFSM, should also know that anything large and strong enough to survive re-entry as a projectile from space will have JUST as much destructive power as a nuclear device.
The definition of WMD only lists those three, as they're the ONLY WMD that currently exist (that the world knows of). Do you really think that "space projectiles" won't be added to that list the first time a titanium slug the size of a volkswagen wipes out Mexico City?
Well, I suppose it matters which government drops it. After all, we, as Americans, possess NO WMD's, do we?
Technically? You're right. But that doesn't mean Mocha's wrong, either.
Kinda true, actually.. I added a faster hard drive and more memory on an old Pentium 3 that was sluggish on Win XP - and now it flies.
Granted, Ubuntu on the same, original, hardware (ie, the slower stuff), flies just as fast.
I think that's the point.
However, I also think Eiger might just be their answer to that. "Okay, okay, we'll FINALLY profile our code and cut out some of the fat."
Maybe we'll see a better windows out of this? Who knows. I think if they opensourced some of the more grotesquely fat parts of the code base, a piece at a time, that they'd have faster development time.
Your take on this is refreshing. I'm tired of those whose reason for supporting the Fairness Doctrine comes explicitly out of a desire to reduce the speech of someone they do not like.
I'm fine with idiots being able to state their opinions, I guess my issue is that since they entered a contract w/ the government to provide public service with the airwaves, they should at least be responsible with it.
Free press is a double-edged sword. You get the Truth and the "truth" out of the deal. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad we have the bill of rights and many of the other amendments. I just wish there were more responsible journalists out there, and more responsible broadcasters as well.
If a broadcaster wants to give his opinion on a matter, great. But if he's going to say "All Christians are evil because they eat babies.." He better be ready to allow a Christian on the air to defend himself. Why? Because that's what's -fair-.
They're given the right to use public airwaves to put out some pretty horrid crap - why CAN'T the government tell them to allow people to defend themselves over the same airwaves? The government didn't HAVE to allow public broadcasting. It didn't even have to allow HAM radios.
bleh. I'm not for censorship by the government, but I'm also not for the censorship of the other side of the story, either.
3. If this story is legit -- and I'm not at all sure that it is -- the villains aren't the fundies. The villains are the theater managers. TFA doesn't mention any actual protests -- just the *fear* of protests.
It's legit, in a way. I've talked to some rep's at IMAX about it, being a non-fundie religious sort I wanted to get the truth instead of the NYT version.
Anyways, it's only a small number of theaters, and IMAX's stance is, "So? They're privately owned." I agree. There's other IMAX theaters, if your local one isn't playing the show you want to see, talk to the manager, and *complain* - otherwise, they're only hearing one side of the story.
On the other hand, the manager may well be the fundie.
Funny that this happened in Fort Worth - when I lived there, that IMAX theater played every IMAX format film that it could get its hands on.
Because Windows has no root!
But which Registrar was it, so we can avoid them like the plague?

Anyways, back to the topic!
I'd be willing to bet there's a shitload of FreeBSD web servers out there, since I manage twelve of them, myself.
Linux has its uses and is great for many tasks, but only Gentoo comes close to the ports system and how well it manages software installation.
Either way, I'm hoping that yes, it will be ported to Linux as well, if it hasn't been already.
I, for one, welcome our new EU overlords.
The first version of google desktop didn't check your gmail for you.
The first version of google didn't remember your search history.
The first version of google's search didn't search images.
Need I go on?

I hate to say it, but this should be modded up.
It's a good idea, even if it is poorly presented.
I for one welcome our rich..
oh, nevermind.
I agree that they were bastardized Kubrick films, but Kubrick films none-the-less.
It's the only reason why I could stomach AI, really.
not to mention he drank it in the temple.
sheesh.
some people.
anyways, he's not too old.
funny that it was a kubrick film...

my right hand is far more morbid than my left, and it controls the mouse...
that's the only funny thing i've ever seen come out of goat.cx.
It won't be long now before there's a giant "Microsoft" sign on the space needle... er wait, that's already been done..
Kaa's Law: In any sufficiently large group of people most are idiots.

And before you ask, no, I'm not Woody.
I bet there will be a FreeBSD version, first..
and here we have the first exploding toadie.
then have them surgically implanted into my hand (or left butt cheek... wherever).
What? So you don't get locked in the trunk or something?

ya got me there.
My point was more along the lines of:
