Forcing users to learn to right-click in order to use an app is poor design.
I don't know about that, it's pretty ubiquitous in Windows, and I wish it was elsewhere. Unless you're saying the only place is in right click, and I agree with you.
But right click is nice: doesn't break anything and gives you contextual clues of what you can do. When in doubt, right click. (of course that's gotten me into trouble in a few terminal-type shells where right click is paste. . . ahh well)
You used answersingenesis.org as a "source"? I'm sorry but that's just too funny. "Here's my source, motherfucker, from a 'scientific' magazine that disproves science!"
missed the fact my editor ate a line. The last paragraph: Transparency and freedom of the press are critically important for a democratic has already betrayed democratic ideals and have lost any credibility as leaders.
should have read:
Transparency and freedom of the press are critically important for a democratic republic. The current administration has already betrayed democratic ideals and have lost any credibility as leaders.
I'd explain why it's important, but I've classfied that.
We're talking about an administration that doesn't give a damn about the principles this country was founded upon, and believes that any and all rights should be suspended for the War on Terror. This is just a case of a gander having its goose cooked.
This administration in particular is a big fan of "when in doubt, redact it out" to avoid publicized miscues, or (more importantly) their own contempt for the Constitution and the People's rights. That's capitalized on purpose, mind you.
This isn't a "hey Geraldo's publishing troop movements!".
This is "hey, concerned patriots are telling everyone about our thought police! Punish anyone who gives him a voice!"
Transparency and freedom of the press are critically important for a democratic has already betrayed democratic ideals and have lost any credibility as leaders.
re: moderation and the like - the whole point of my post was it was an unknown and shouldn't be treated like a definite (as the article did) but because the subject matter was negativity towards Spore, poof goes the post.:) (oh and maybe the CoH jab bugged somebody)
The first time I saw the Spore hype I was completely estatic. It looked AWESOME. I still think it looks AWESOME. There's a very high likelihood I'm going to get it, but I am beginning to feel skeptical. It feels too much like the Black and White hype as you mentioned above. Which is scary because B&W sucked donkey nuts.
RTS on the Wii - I dunno, it's got a Definite Maybe. RTS is. . . I dunno. There's about a billion things they can do with the Wii and the controller and I just feel like RTS/FPS is really (pardon the marketroid term) thinking inside the box.
I have a hunch there's going to be much bigger and much better concepts than RTS for the Wii. Plus I'm getting old, losing time, and basically SUCK at RTS nowadays. And I was a pretty decent starcraft player on Kali/Bnet. But I'm old and have been handing my balls to player after player in Rise of Legends the last two weeks.
Here's to getting a Wii and (probably!) Spore! *clinky clinky cheers-type sound*
That was the first "oh shit" moment with Spore for me - when Will Wright was talking about the cell phone port as well.
Hopefully that means just one phase or something. . . like the "spore" phase.
But the idea that a Cell phone's limited interface will allow it to play the same game as a PC. . . just indicates it's not going to be that good.
Or, alternately, that Will Wright has succumbed to Molynieuxism and is over-promising. Which seems likely. . . but what parts are being overpromised? THAT'S what concerns me.
That said, I'm drooling over Spore and will probably buy it, but I'm approaching it with serious skepticism. And I'm mildly amused I was modded to oblivion for a "spore might suck" sort of comment.
And it has a very great danger of doing a whole bunch of stuff Not Very Well. Sort of reminds me of City of Heroes, in everything I've seen about it - great costume designer (creature creator) but the gameplay doesn't live up to it.
Naturally, this speculation isn't that valid as I haven't played it either. But I'm not asserting it's "knocking it out of the park" or even that it will fail. I am simply skeptical that it's going to be the Only Game I Ever Play because of all the uniquely combined elements.
My PS2 DVD player would fade in and out, and also had a greatly lowered max volume (to the point that if the traffic was busy outside and the windows were open, I couldn't hear the movie sometimes)
I fixed the dimming effect by running the PS2 through an RF adapter, degrading the signal.
So, no, the PS2 didn't meet my expectations for a DVD player and I had to buy another one. Which was part of the reason why I bought the PS2 in the first place, unfortunately.
Cobra Commander was a little bitch.
He was MY first exposure to an overbearing micromanager who couldn't get shit done. If he'd left Destro alone a little bit more often, maybe GI Joe wouldn't have been so fucking smug.
And maybe Destro would have signed the Cobra troops up for some shooting range time.
But I'd hit post already. It's not counterintuitive so much as divergent from every other standard out there.
It might even be the better standard, but it's not what I'm used to.
As a consulto-whore, I work with a lot of different email applications depending on my clients' desires.
If I'm laptop bound and can log in via POP, I'm a thunderbird type of guy. Otherwise it's normally their choice.
And Lotus Notes just sucks.
Sure, some of it is being set in my ways as a Groupwise/Outlook/Outlook Express/ Thunderbird guy. I'm used to a multi-windowed interface. But a lot of it is simply usability.
Here's a really simple thing Lotus Notes could do to make their product a lot better: Prompt users when closing if they have more than one tab open! Particularly since their system is so freakin' counterintuitive from every other email browser!
I loathe this product. Maybe it was just the implementation that sucked, but it was a bitch to schedule meetings (No, don't use that calendar link, it won't work. Click over on the other calendar link. Yeah. Then go to tools. Then find Calendars. Then type in each person.)
Seriously, I think I'd rather use Outlook Express, vulnerabilities and all. (also, Lotus Notes was the slowest program I think I've ever run. I know that probably was the implementation or somesuch, but I'd click on an email, then surf the net for a couple minutes before coming back to it)
It should be allot or a lot.
See, the whole point of the joke was that spell checker isn't contextual nor grammatical, so it's not a huge benefit.
Alot will show up as an error in a spell checker. Miss steaks won't.
I actually justified buying my PS2 because I needed a DVD player. I wanted a new system (and my roommate wanted a new system and helped me justify it, heh) but I didn't want to spend the money on it. . . but I DID need a DVD player. . .
Guess what? The DVD player was crippled. Absoutely crippled. It faded in and out until I bought an RF adapter, giving it essentially the same quality as my VCR.
Gee thanks.
I'd buy a Sont gaming system because of a peripheral why? I can't recall.
Never again. And I was a fanboi. Sony HD TV, Sony Vaio laptop and a Sony Vaio gaming rig (long sordid story involving a defective surge surpressor, a lightning storm, a hideous City of Heroes addiction, and enough money to walk out of Best Buy with something FAST)
Here's the big beef I have with SOX:
Enron/Andersen's shredding of the evidence was illegal already.
It's similar to the "tougher anti-immigration bills" floating around some state legislatures. It's merely posturing. We call them illegal immigrants for a reason.
The same applies to this whole SOX thing. It was a reactionary law (which history tells us are the worst laws) to the myriad of corporate corruption cases bubbling up then.
There's a more effective method than new laws, which would be enforcing our current laws appropriately, and punishing white collar criminals with a scale that reflects the massive societial damage their deviance causes. A convenience store armed robbery is often punished more severely than embezzlement. This shouldn't be the case, as someone like Ebbers or Lay wreak far more havoc than a crackhead looking for a score. But the crackhead is typically punished more harshly.
SOX didn't assist in preventing white collar crime, or "accounting irregularities" if you want a euphemism. All it did was make politicians look effectual and spawn a consulting racket.
So, you've never actually played something, you have no first-hand experience with it, but you feel qualified anyway to pass judgment upon it and compare it with a carrot in the stick. Pray tell, on what do you base that judgment, then?
I've never shot heroin into my cock, but I'm pretty sure that would be a Very Bad Idea. And I do feel qualified to say that.
Not completely disagreeing with you, but your point above isn't strong.
Dan Brown's a crap writer.
I don't know about that, it's pretty ubiquitous in Windows, and I wish it was elsewhere. Unless you're saying the only place is in right click, and I agree with you.

A week's not complete without at least one downmod on slashdot.
Classic.

You can't buy friends with salad!

I liked it a lot. I even liked the newest of its ilk, Evil Genius. A little too much actually. Nearly had a breakup w/the girl because of it.

They feed you!!
Actually, many of them will pay you $100 (or more) to do their fancy little group thing.
Is the other half of your ass posting on slashdot, then? ;)
Is that a fancy term for meeting scheduler/appointment calendar or is it more and I've just missed the groupware train?

Bad news, however, is still much faster. Somebody should design a ship powered on it, or something.

Am I infected? What steps can I take to analyze the damage?
