I don't want cookies on my pc that let people know things about my web browsing habits, not because I have something to hide, and not because I think of it as 'spywarez', but simply because I do not agree with the tactics used by marketing research agencies, such as the ones these poor whiney capitalistic-minded cut-throat sharks represent.
Advertisers shove stuff in your face all over TV, billboards, bus stops, movie previews, and now the internet.
The 'Premium Content' internet advertising business model is a little bit more of a friendly approach to advertising, from a users perspective, but from a marketing perspective, being friendly (or considering the views of the consumer) isn't an option worth considering, to them.
ok, so maybe not as radical, but still, the only people gullible enough to listen to the MS fud, are the ones gullible enough to read CNET, EWeek, and all those other crappy publications that cater to 'market trends'.
Until citizens can trace back spammers, and force ISP's to kill their accounts, the way RIAA/BSA does regarding copyright acts, then I guess it's all fair in love & war.
Slackware has had X.org since 10.0 came out over a year ago.
I've tested w/ a GeForce FX 5200 and an ATI Radeon 9200SE, and both worked fine (@ 1920x1440@75hz on 21" Sony E540), although I had to install nvidia drivers for the GeForce (but not for the radeon), all went with minimal hassle.
'The Average Person' who uses a Desktop PC, is computer illiterate, whether it be windows or mac.
Microsoft makes it easy for 'anybody' to use Windows, and Apple makes it easy for 'anybody with a decent-sized wallet or a job in hollywood' to use Mac OS, which is ok for my grandma & grandpa, and all the gay people in west hollywood, and of coarse... for Bill Gates & Steve Jobs to make money on them.
However, let's try looking at this from a different perspective...
Sit 2 people down who have never used a computer before, make them build a computer from the ground up, guide them thru the OS installation process (1 user installs (insert your favorite distro here) linux, the other user installs (insert your favorite cuss-word here) windows xp), and then guide them thru the login process.
I guarantee you that the user who put together his pc and installed linux, will be FAR more computer literate than the user who built/installed windows.
Sure... when the linux user eventually migrates to windows, chances are he will be relieved that he won't have to apply as much computing techniques in order to use his computer, but he will still be FAR more computer literate than 'the average user'.
A whole new approach to 'education' is needed!

Improving Education?
·
· Score: 0
here are the main issues that prevented me from having a successful experience in school...
Too many students per class
Outdated Books/Curriculum
Un-Motivating/Un-Interesting Teachers
Lack of Purpose within Curriculum
Lack of sufficient technologies (ie: PC's)
Came from a Divorced Home, Moved a lot, lost credits in the process of transfering schools
Lack of personal financial stability
The problems with the education system go far beyond the education system itself, and goes as far as the economic state, the cost of living, and the income of the household.
I don't know the solution to all of these problems, but I found one that worked for me: A Community College Pel Grant, which bought me my pc, and a part time job, to pay for my braodband net connection, which let me spend 4 years in my closet teaching myself various programming languages and other (what used to be) marketable skills.
I still think MacArthur was right... we should have nuked the commie bastids 50 years ago when we had the chance.
I have nothing against the chinese people/culture/etc., but their corrupted decepticon-style gvmnt is worrysome to free-thinking individuals like myself, and should be to you too.
While evil corporations in america continue to sellout the people of america, the chinese gvmnt is quietly (and strategically) taking advantage.
Now you've got a star wars race going on, chinese spies embeded ALL OVER the world (w/ over 1200 in So. Cal. alone), and we continue to ignore the realities that we face.
The real issue is not so much that you have to write a book about it, it's just the fact that a lot of people don't know any better, or really don't care, so they continue to use IE.
I've tried to turn-on a number of people to firefox, some embrace it, others shun it, either way, I did my part at providing them with information and suggestions that could help them resolve their compromised systems, whether they listen or not, is not my problem!
The more we hand private sector technology development jobs oversea's, the more and more our technologies will become obsolete, which will assure our own demise.
People who tell you Java or.NET are better (for small-2-enterprise-level web applications), are simply brainwashed by market-share data and proprietary software marketing tactics.
w/ infrared technology to see thru your roof, watchin' ya read wankdot, etc.
so this article must not matter to (people like) me.
they need a good dose of stfu!

Linux can't be broken, the Oracle said so.
Smack me and I'll smack ya back!
The only problem is: 'When good Self-Defending Firewalls go bad', ya know.
Because a true CS Professional would never be bound to the laws and architectural flaws provided by microsoft.

As predictable as this response may be (to those who consider slashdot as a anti-ms and pro-linux forum)...
Don't throw your PC away because of spywarez, simply uninstall windows, and install (insert your favorite distro here) Linux.
You'll not need to worry about spywarez, for a LONG time!
mysql's AES_ENCRYPT/AES_DECRYPT or ENCODE/DECODE functions are what I suggest.

exactly, there is no point in copyrighting digital material. Whether it be music, movies, games, software, photographs, text, etc.
Why not just start copyrighting viruses and then suing infected users.
when does it end?
Well how convenient!

They don't use PHP & MySQL for EVERYTHING tho! =)
people who type 92379273123782 lines of code per-day, or chat on irc/im @ 3897327982mph, tend to create typos from time-to-time.
It baffles me when english professionals and journalists critisize those who (or that which) they do not understand.
google uses PHP and MySQL as well.

People who tell you Java or
RSS is not exploitable, the software that renders it is.
Microsoft needs to focus on a secure RSS aggregation engine w/ secure algorithmic filtering, and then stfu.
