Will this slow down the booting of Vista? Hopefully it won't, it will keep a record, and only if there are problems or changes will it start to detect things - which seems like a reasonable idea.

Good, install options are stupid anyway. I can understand when size of the hdd was a problem, but not anymore. Being able to remove stuff would be good, but installing by windows was a load of crap anyway. If I could select everything at the start, then that would be fine, but for xp you still couldn't do that.

What a lot of fun it is, to sit and wait for the next box while it installs. Hopefully we won't have to do that anymore.

I agree with all that you say, you make some great points. A lot of the bias comes from sour grapes. But, management in some companies is the last bastian of the old boys club. Sure management is hard, but when you have seen millions waisted on clearly incompetent decisions, you become a little disillusioned. When you see people who have only ever sent email before, and that was a challenge, making technical decisions because they don't want to lose face, you begin to disbelieve. This is the other side.

That sounds like incompetence all round (in management). Ones one incompetent person creeps in, then you are on a downhill slope. There are 2 problems with incompetent people, they are incompetent, and also they can't tell whether other people are incompetent or not (since they probably don't see themselves as such). Get out quick, or at least have an exit plan.

Yes, great example. This invalidates his point completely.

By definition blaming the user is wrong. If your grandmother is a user of a F22, then the machine should not stop her rom trying to fly it. A computer user should be able to use a computer, without getting an infected machine by checking their email, or going to a webpage. And this is what has happened. When you buy a computer today, it will come with a virus checked and spyware checked, and a better browser (hopefully) - why, what would you do. Just blame the user and not create such tools? This is strange reasoning.

People who want to add extra information to there page can, it doesn't all have to change at once. The people who do add semantic information to there page, will be indexed better, or by a different browser which producers only relevant results - this is a huge advantage. Then, this will be popular, and more and more people will add the extra information (which for sure, takes extra time). If people spam the system, or put in incorrect information they are excluded. It is possible, and it is the next step - it is a solution to the problem of spamming.

  12. Re:Semantic web is currently fragile technology on Challenging the Ideas Behind the Semantic Web · · Score: 1

At some stage, things get complicated, or you are left with a mess. This is the next step, and that step comes with classifiying everything. It is not such a grand vision, it just means adding extra information about objects on a page. This can be done in a number of ways, not necessarily that complicated. You just have to describe a bit better the page you put on, putting it into contect, so that the computer can interpret better what that page means. It is a good thing.

If you have something wrong, it refers you to the local clinic for some more test. There would be very little liability in this sort of system.

Medical professionals do a lot of great work, but they are often under a lot of strain and worked very hard, and are capable of missing something - if a machine gives them some hints, then they can test for whatever it is.

  20. So what will AMD do? on Core 2 Reviews All Around the Web · · Score: 5, Insightful

    for the techreport article:

In fact, after seeing the Core 2 in action, many folks may be wondering how AMD is going to keep up. The Athlon 64 X2 4200+ currently lists for more than the Core 2 Duo E6600, and that's just not gonna cut it. Fortunately, AMD has confirmed to us that a major price move is coming in July. We don't have the specifics just yet, but they say they intend to maintain a competitive price-performance ratio. That may mean we'll see the dramatic price cuts rumored to be coming, which would be a good start.

For its next trick, AMD needs to get its 65nm fab process going ASAP. I've heard prognostications that AMD won't be able compete against Core 2 chips with its current AMD64 microarchitecture. That may be the case, but I'm not entirely convinced. The contest we've seen in the preceding pages pitted CPUs manufactured on AMD's 90nm process against CPUs made on Intel's 65nm process. The Netburst fiasco at 90nm has made us forgetful about the benefits of process shrinks, but they can be substantial. AMD could be in a much stronger position if it gets to 65nm quickly.

Why are there so many fans of AMD? We can all see the core duo is a great chip, but AMD managed a coup, to topple the crown of the reigning champ Intel a few years ago, and that deserved much kudos. I think a lot of us were worried about Intel becoming another Microsoft, and Intel had some very dodgey practises (Rambus, Pentium divide, PIV)

OK, so I am extra careful when I see them. I wish they weren't there, but there you go. Complaining about some poor people who can't afford to drive to work is just silly. These people should be able to find another way to work, without driving, or get a closer to home job. This would do a lot to solve the problem of disappearing resources as well, stopping people from driving who don't need to.
