  1. DEMOS? on Controversial StarForce Copy Protection Creators Quizzed · · Score: 5, Interesting

I noticed on that list that there are several demos. It is completely unacceptable that a demo could install this dubious software, when it's distribution does not constitute piracy in anyone's terms. I hope these games give users a warning about what they are going to install.

  2. Poverty? on Olympic Medal Prediction Model · · Score: 1
"If you're on the poverty line, you don't have a lot of time to invest in sports," said John Hawksworth, head of macroeconomics at PwC.

This isn't always true. Many athletes come form impoverished backgrounds. This is especially true of football (soccer) in the UK. In Brazillian townships, excelling in sport is seen as a route to a better lifestyle. A fiendish motivator, that.

Working less for more is a little optimistic. It would be more attainable to create/provide jobs that are tailored to people's specialities. Jobs that make people productive and also give them a sense of purpose is what a modern, just society should consist of.

A lot of people come out of retirement, not because they need the money, but because they miss the purpose they had when they were working. Hedonism doesn't create happy people.

  5. Surgery? on The Cost of Computer Naivete · · Score: 5, Insightful

'Surgery' is a little misleading since it suggests hardware damage was incurred. If I was determined to use a metaphor, I'd go for 'therapy' :)

Size. My motherboard has absolutely no room for an extra component that, by the sounds of the article, is still the size of a regular HDD.

Wireless bridges do ease the pain for linux 802.11b/g networking. I consider internet access to be essential for all my computer use, so I replaced my Alcatel Speedtouch USB modem with an ADSL router. This allowed me to bypass the Speedtouch driver assault course.

What an interesting gauge you propose. I better Migrate my family computers over to http://www.cs.bell-labs.com/plan9dist/ ASAP, since it's clearly more intuitive than GNU/Linux, OS X or WinXP!
