It would take a lot more than that to successfully fire a Federal employee. Even in the case where an IRS worker has actually divulged personal information on a large number of taxpayers, the appeals and arbitration process is an arduous journey through a maze of twisty passages.

How do you get a civil servant fired? Get his manager worried about HIS OWN job. In this case, no harm, no foul. Nobody got hurt, so nobody is at fault.

Okaaaay, so that's one for the control group, then? Thanks for volunteering.

Seriously, please read some of the other posts in this thread, especially joak's (who thinks I'm misinformed, btw).

Then also read this: Cambodia's Premier Halts Planned Trials of AIDS Drug

Please clarify: is it short-sighted to ask the question of ethics, or just short-sighted to take a position against placebos in particular (which I did not)?

Is there or can there be a better way than what your were taught in science class? Was this matter solved in Hensinki in 1964?

P.S. Where does my IQ enter into all of this? I felt your knee jerk all the way over here.

1945 was a great year for technology-- not so great for ethics. Just ask Oppenheimer.

There are real ethical issues that don't get discussed in the popular press; these are just in the biotech field:

    Placebos in clinical trials
    Genetic mapping and privacy
    Patents on gene sequences/organisms
    Cloning

  8. Whose fault is it? The ISP. on The Cost of Computer Naivete · · Score: 2, Insightful
I've "fixed" my share of coworkers'/neighbors' home PCs after they bought broadband service. I always recommend buying a hardware firewall to prevent this happening again. "Firewall? what's that?"

The ISPs are pushing broadband -- hard -- and should be responsible for either providing a HW firewall with their DSL/cable modem or at least educating their customers that they need to install one.

I felt the same way when the AOLers discovered Usenet years ago. AOL brought them here, so AOL should teach them netiquette.

Also, broadband ISPs should register their dynamic IPs at SORBS.

It's not a Windows problem, it's a PC enduser problem. The domain technical contact is ultimately responsible for his users.

I concur...their website is impressive but I had a heck of a time with their customer service drones when it came time to move. No one was empowered to override Master Control to fix obvious flaws in the process.

Also, there is a stigma in the industry attached to Progressive customers because they Progressive traditionally serves the "unsafe" end of the market. This can be a problem when switching to another carrier.

  10. 3-minute MBA on Roxio To Concentrate on Online Music Business · · Score: 2, Insightful

Here's Entrepreneurship 101: The successful entrepreneur turns a Risky Venture into a Cash Cow. She then sells the Cash Cow, when it has matured, to the professional manager. And starts a new Risky Venture. The difference between enterpreneurs (whom the /.ers envy) and professional managers (whom they scorn) is called management style. Most entrepreneurs have neither the patience nor the inclination to manage a mature company. Those who recognize this in themselves move on to bigger and better things. Examples of entrepreneurs: Steve Jobs, Michael Robertson, Wayne Huizenga.
