If your application has an bug and inserts an invalid date, you don't want that error to cascade to another application
Like you said, if your application has a bug in it...
I wouldn't go around blaming MySQL for not checking input into your application. If a programmer's code was tight then that person wouldn't have this problem. MySQL does just what is supposed to do, which is store data. It is up to the programmer to make sure that the data entered into the database is correct.
I like MySQL because it is small and has simple syntax. It is perfect for small to medium databases which is what many web developers need. Not all of us are Amazon.com.
This may be true for people who are randomly surfing around but I have to believe that if a person is deliberately going to your site, they will stay even if it doesn't have a lot of flash (and not the cruddy Macromedia Flash either).
I would think that most business websites have a specific target/niche and, unless the site is completely horrible, people will stay no matter what their first impression is. There are several sites that I go to that I am not fond of but I keep going back because the content is what really matters to me.
on how two Washington Times writers feel that Google's digitizing of books will result in "crushing creativity" of other authors.
Well... I can't see anything good coming from ability to patent an idea. How many great teen movies (e.g., Sixteen Candles, Better Off Dead, The Sure Thing, etc.) would we have missed out on if similar ideas were subject to a patent infringement lawsuit? This is just CRAZY!!! There will always be similar threads of thought in the world and if we try to limit that our creativity (and subsequently our lives) will be stifled.
That's the price you pay for going to a private school. If you don't like it then hit the big yellow bus and go to public school (your parents are paying for it anyway).
Okay... I have been a huge Apple fan since back in 1987 when I bought my first Macintosh 512ke, but I do know that Apple does make mistakes from time to time.
Right now Apple is fighting the record companies because they want to charge Apple for their music on the iTunes music store. I don't really see the difference between that and what Apple is trying.
Also, why would accessory makers want to continue development of add-ons if this happens? The iPod is a great device (I have two) but it doesn't do everything. That's where the accessory makers really push the iPod over the top. Without them, I probably wouldn't enjoy the iPod experience as much.
... of how big business in America DOES NOT care about you!!!
That also explains why customer service has gone completely down the tubes. If you get a rude sales person or defective product/service, it somehow is not their fault and they don't have to help you. All they care about is the allmighty dollar and, unfortunately, they have the size, power, and clout to back themselves up.
I say it's time for a consumers revolt! We need to take back our rights and remind them who is boss!
Now those companies are going to start suing us (ala the RIAA) for unauthorized use of those genes. We'll have to obtain a license so we can go on existing.
My question is now... does making copies of ourselves (i.e., babies) constitute "fair use" or will they try to grab us for that as well???
I attempt to block ads whenever or wherever I can!!!
I can't stands ads. I block them in my web browser. The first thing I do with a new magazine is rip out all of the stupid little "subscribe" or other inserts. Whenever a commercial comes on TV I mute it. If they weren't so annoying I would probably pay a little more attention but they are always so "in your face" about it. The internet ones use (BLAH) Flash, the TV ones (despite what people say) are louder than the actual show, the magazine ones fall out when you are on the potty. OH... I haven't even touched on the email and snail-mail ads/spam that I get DAILY! Enough already. What happened to tasteful advertising??? I have absolutely no problem with regular ads on websites or in magazines. I have even been known to watch funny ads on TV. Just please quit making them so obnoxious (sp?).
I thought the job of these people was to prevent things like this from living.
You can make this argument about any virus. Your argument, taken to its logical conclusion, implies that we should not do any research on any harmful micro-organism for fear of it getting out. Ignoring harmful things and hoping they go away is not an intelligent strategy.
Yes you can make this argument about any virus. And the argument is, the fewer viruses we have like this the better! If you want to think along these people's ideas then... HEY... let's try to clone Hitler or Stalin or *gulp* Bill Gates to see what makes them tick. That'd be great wouldn't it??? Okay yes I know, if you clone a person you will not get the same person but you got my drift didn't you?
I think that there was a Numb3rs about this very same issue last season wasn't there. Bottom line, in my opinion, is that the scientists should work with less virulent viruses to see what makes them tick... THEN apply their research to eradicating the really bad buggies; as all viruses work essentially the same.
"If the public and 'their' politicians believe that the entertainment industry is on the verge of collapse, they'll be much more likely to accept restrictions on use of content that they've paid for."
Okay... first off, this will never happen (well at least not in our lifetimes). Secondly, even if it does happen, there are plenty of independant musicians and filmmakers who would be more than willing to step in and take over; and for a reasonable price to boot. These days, almost anybody with a good computer can produce high quality CD's and DVD's at a good price. Who knows... maybe the quality will improve as well???
This is completely bogus. It is not a privilege for me to play music CD's on my Macintosh as I have PAID for the right to do so. There is a standard for music CD's and players, and they should not make any changes to that standard until the bulk of the industry has caught up. I have heard that there are older (not old but older) CD players that cannot play DRM protected discs. I don't see how the music industry can think this can possibly be good for business.
Maybe middle America just isn't ready for the internet
sadness
His theorems have been helpful in creating iPod.

Wow
Forgive me for asking ... but isn't this old news???
Stupid French ... piss me off ;-)

"Intelligent .NET Applications" ... is that a new Oxymoron for the 21st century???
That's because geeks love porn ;-)

Oh well

Q: When was the last time you saw something really sexy and easy to use come out of Redmond???
A: Never!!!
