So you are saying you have no fetishes that you aren't socially acceptable. Fetishes are primarily born not made. While I'm sure there are other distrubing aspects of the person that are connected to violence, as long as he doesn't COMMIT those things, let him do whatever he wants.
$300?!?! buy used. I got an HP LaserJet 4L for $10 from a second hand store. A 7 yr old printer that can print text perfectly fine. While the slowness, lack of nice graphics, b&w only does bother me, i'm thankful for the many YEARS i get out of each toner cartridge. Actually, my mom bought the same printer when it first came out, and she has only had to replace the toner twice in those 7 years.
As always, when someone like this is about to come out, it's our job to "educate" the people. There is no reason they need to make this a windows only program and lets tell them that.

Now, when someone does make xconfig it uses the qt libraries. There is also a make gconfig for all you gnome people. While I like the advancement, it's annoying that even at the deepest level, the kenel, people are forced to repeat functuality for different libraries. While I love the choice, it is just annoying that we so much redundency for these libraries. It seems that programmers are programming more for the libraries than they are for the users. Unfortunitly, I can't think of a way to solve this.
However, it does suck for anyone who uses another window manager and doesn't have/want qt or gnome. I guess they have to live with ncurses.
Depends on your classes. I'm a physics major and i found that once you get to high level math/physics, the only things that help are a clipboard, lots of pencils and lots of paper. That's it. Early on I took simpler classes where i was able to use my palm/keyboard for note taking, but now most of my notes are in the form of complex math equations and pictures, so it's kinda useless.
But remember, the point of college is NOT the classes. I go to class, do all the homework, keep a 3.5 GPA, but all of that is just a tiny speck of my time. I use to be a shy nerd, but I was willing to take a chance in college, and I definitly feel I'm a better person because of it.
Think Baldur's Gate with 100x the character development and plot. This game uses the same engine and it is an AD&D game, the point is way different. You start off as a character with no memory of your past and the ability to not die. The point of the game is self discovery and seeing the effects of your actions on others.
And, come on, how many other games giving you a smart ass floating skull as a companion?
checkout the "Timeline" in the linked article (I'll repeat it here in case it gets slashdotted)
2002/12/05 Information leakage discovered.

2003/01/07 Seti@home team contacted again.
2003/01/14 Bufferoverflow in server discovered.
2003/01/21 Seti@home team contacted again, this time through email.
2003/01/21 Seti@home team confirmed the problem.
2003/01/25 Seti@home team promissed fixed version are being build.
2003/02/03 Seti@home team informed me about problems with the fixes for the win32 version.
2003/04/06 New Seti@home clients available, advisory released.
This advisory came 4 months late. While I'm glad this person contacted Seti first before releasing the advisory, I cannot believe that it took them two months to fix a bufer overflow! While seti@home isn't a mission critical app, I would think the seti people would want to release a new version very quickly, at the very least so that they know that their personal omputers can't get exploited.
There is a reason not to do it, but it's trivial. The grounding wire on the power plug is a whole lot better than the grounding wire on the 40pin ribbon. By taking out the power first, there is still some electricity in it that then goes thru the ribbon.
Um... wouldn't the deterioration be a benefit? The entire movie is a bunch of messed up clips of film. Does it really hurt the film if some more warping is added to the film?
Actually the brain isn't necessary to live. In one of my Ethics class I learned about a baby whos brain developed outside of the head, so it had to be removed after birth. The baby continued to live and was taken care of by the grandmother (the mother didn't want the baby). The baby's spinal cord (actually, the Pons, the base of the brain/top of the neck) has basic abilities such as heart beat, dispose of collected waste (and i think) swallow when it senses food in the mouth.
Simple, developing your own idea costs money. If you are already living off your savings you don't really want to take a big chunk out of it to start a high risk project. You're right in that there is little monitary benefits (however, you are wrong in that these people are still getting unemployment benefits), what they do get is some more items for their resume and the possiblity of large rewards (while not as large as if these people went alone, there is a higher probability).
It's overclocked. It would be modded if it gained an aluminium case with a window, some blue lights, something to measure fan RPM and "whohoo, l33t" dremelled into the side.
Actually It isn't overclocked at all, none of the electronics were messed with. They hadn't upgraded to a better motor. All they did was cut holes in the case and add a heatsink and fans. Now if that isn't modding I don't know what it.
Now if they HAD overclocked it, now THAT would be cool. Taking the whole thing apart figure out where the controls are, do a little bit of soldering here, voltage mod there, and active cooling on all the chips, that would have been an insane amount of effort though, so we gotta live with this "mere" modding job.
What ARE you talking about? Since when are computers holy and have a "blatent wrongness" about them? Just because companies prefer to stay close to a known money making path they are curropting the true beauty that a company could be? The amusing part is that these companies ARE making things use less and less energy. Compare the.35 micron p2 (IIRC) and this.13 gfx, the energy used per transistor is MUCH less, but they add a bunch of transistors so that people are more interested in buying them. Would you really prefer to still be using a Riva TNT equivilent Vid card, but that uses only a tiny bit of energy? Would you keep buying the upgrades? This isn't a bizarre path, this is the path of the market. Most people want better and better cards, and while they wouldn't accept massive 30kw power suckers, increasing the woltage just a tad is acceptable.
to bring in actual statistics into the idea, check out the seti poll. In it they have this:
How many hours is your computer running on a typical day? (118112 responses)
Less than 24 38.26%
24, because of SETI@home 33.19%
24, but not because of SETI@home 28.56%
33% of people run their comp 24hrs just for seti. Now you were talking about "how many tons of coal are burned for seti," It has been calculated for everyone to live like a middleclass american it would take 4.2 earths. ( A similar but different idea is talked about here.) While I agree that "every little bit helps," We need to do a major change if everyone is going to be able to live at our standard.
You say how other causes are actually worthy of the "tons of burned coal" because they are much more likely to succeed and can greatly help people. Everyone that gives cycles to seti knows that the chance of finding aliens is very small, and might infact be 0, however, the gains from the discovery will be far far greater. I personally think finding larger primes or distributed.net is a waste of time, that their are more "worthy" causes, but each person has to figure out for themself what he or she thinks is important. And as you said, "As long as the people (or companies) running their programs are willing to pay the cost of running the program, I think they're great things to be contributing to."
Unlike Mac OS 9 and earlier, Mac OS X supports and utilizes file name extensions. However, if your application allows users to create documents, such as PDF files, that may find their way onto earlier versions of the Mac OS, be aware that you must write Type and Creator information to those files in order to make them usable on Mac OS 9 and earlier.
Mac OS X is going from the unix meathod (file types with the data writtin in the file) to the windows meathod (file extensions) While making things slightly simpler for apllication makers, why would they do this? One of the big problems with file extensions is that virus makers use fake icons and.txt or.html endings to their names (i.e. virus.html.exe) to trick the user. Anyone have any ideas on why they would switch to an idea as old as DOS?
remember, science doesn't know everything. For a long time people said to eat chiken soup even though there was no scientific basis. Much later someone did do scientific tests and found out that chicken soup IS good for you, proving what all the old mothers had believed for generations.
If you read the think at the fbijob site linked in the article, it will show all the requirements. It serisouly looks like a sucky job, you must have great health, great hearing, great vision, be less than 37 yrs old, and you will get a starting pay of ~45,000. Also, people need to have knowledge in computer science, hard science (phyiscs, chemistry...) foreign language, and other stuff. The big problem (as mentioned in the article) is that the fbi excepts the new recruits to be like normal fbi agents and run around and go after the bad guys in the real world. Have they never heard of specialization? The only way i can explain it is that the fbi are getting deluged by applicants and have ultra high requirements for that reason.
heh, good idea. My solution has always been to warez the games, and only buy the games that have native linux drivers. However, your idea will only really work on the big selling games. Most smaller shops only produce a few games, and don't have the money to try linux porting, of course Starcraft 2 on linux would be a VERY nice thing.
Lets say that all games work with wine and lots of people have converted over to linux. There will always ALWAYS be the tweakers/hardcore gamers out there who want the best. These are the people that would pay to get linux binaries of a game vs. just using it in wine. (and before you say no one will do that, i plan on doing it when NWN comes out, and i know of a few other people going to do that too.) It might be slow growth, but game companies will see that there is money in making native linux binaries. More people will go out and buy their cool "made for linux" games at compusa (remember, we have a huge install base now). And as more people buy stuff the cheaper it gets. Will we ever see 100% native linux games? eventually, but it will take a long time. Will we get games that have linux binaries? yes, just look at id who will always make a linux binairy for proof.
since when does CS have copy protections. It is based on hl which has no protections. The only problem i have heard is of servers using anti-cheat stuff which blocks out linux. There will be almost no way for wine to be able to get accepted into those servers unless transgaming makes a deal with valve.
may I ask where you got this quote? according to this post finding the actuall text of the EULA isn't easy.

Astronomy magazine has an article about this, unfortunitly, there is no free online version. They do have some spiffy graphics that went with the article though, showing the death of the universe: http://www.astronomy.com/Content/Dynamic/Articles/ 000/000/001/165gbnzz.asp

you don't need the copy protection code. I would bet that all games that work with the $15 version have a crack on www.gamecopyworld.com
