the article didn't actually say it, but i bet they meant virus makers. Most people get viruses through ignorance, not malice, so it would be unlikely that they meant any random person. However, if they find source code for a virus i'm sure that person is screwed (unless they have a legit reason for having it, and i doubt learning counts as one.)
Since when is mp3 a standard? just cause it's popular doesn't mean it is doing the samething that happened to jadec (the patented memory tech that became the standard). calling mp3 a standard is like saying fast food HAS to sell burgers and fries.
Maybe you shouldn't put words into the mouth of an international corporation. Do you honestly think that they think by not making betamax anymore the court case just vanishes?
actually, before this article Carmack said that there will be a p2p system but it will be capped at 4 players. This article is refuting the 4 player limit that caused many people to gag.
Also don't you think an enginner working at ID is a little more careful with his words than saying p2p when meaning playable online?
as for number 2, companies just need to buy a copy of redhat server, or whatever. As long as they buy a version of linux, they can get instant support. This excuse in general doesn't work anymore now that we have so many linux companies ready to sign deals.
except that companies can sue for loss of income because of it, and tht isn't something you can just patch away. The thing is, who would have to pay is the real question, the maintainer or Linus, or some anonymous person that sent in the actual infringing code?
Anyone know why they would use nickel and not copper? or even aluminium? AMD's chips have been known to heat up quickly and i would think a nice copper heatspreader (while a bit pricy) would help a lot.
those pins are slightly bent, but nothing extreme..... I was thinking that someone just held the pins firmly and bent them, but they bend out not in. Anyways, as long as it isn't bent bent, you can push it back into place.
While i'd love to buy all three i don't feel like blowing $100 in games, so I'm asking anyone that knows about the games which 1 game would you recommand? is it a story line and i should start from the beginning, or is the latest far superior from the earlier ones?
Hmm, i know that most loki games simply don't work for multiplayer. The problem is that the games used some sort of directx calls to manage the connection and there is nothing loki could alter it to to keep networking possible. I myself have loki's Alpha Centauri (an awesome game), and it is impossible for me to play multiplayer with anyone on windows, i've never tried linux though.
if we are going to get real, then we should follow the other rules for haikus. First, yeah they have to be nature themed, but also each line has to be it's own thought. No putting a whole sentence on 3 lines. Also, either the first line or the last line must be an "aha!" moment. Example from old haiku (when translated to english not following the 5-7-5 rule is best):
old pond
frog jumps in
splash
the first 2 lines are description lines of the situation, the third line is like the culmination, the aha line. (however the aha line can be at the beginning too)
Lets look at a similar scenario. When NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement) was created America was able to get tons of stuff from mexico for far cheaper prices. As an example, avacados dropped over a $1/each in price. The problem is that the avacado sellers know they can get (to them) a lot of money in U.S. so they jacked up the price in Mexico. IIRC mexicans paid 2x the cost for an avacado compared to americans (when you take in the effect of average salery).
So, yes, we will get cheaper prices, but other countries wont just go up a bit, they will go up a lot in all other countries. Compare how much easier it is to buy DVDs from around the world than avacados.
I have already been playing it on linux for weeks now. For anyone who doesn't want to have to pay, try this howto (not, this howto DOESNT use the latest version of winex, but it has specific code that had to be removed because the author feared DMCA): http://www.transgaming.com/showthread.php?msg=1163 8&forum=6&thread=11638
p.s. I crash about once every 2 hours, and i get no graphical anomolies.
i don't know if you care, but the scopes trial was as uninteltional as Rosa Parks sitting in the white section. The ACLU had planned for a long time, trying to find the perfect person to use to break the law (side bit of info: Rosa Parks wasn't initially planned to be the person, however the first person got pregnant). When the trial did happen, both sides were ready to send the best lawyers they had,
No, a doctor, plumber, electrician, etc, don't make money from knowing more, in all those fields a regular person could do the research and solve the problem themselves. The reason people pay them is their expertise. I know it's possible to replace the transmission on a car, and i could look up how to, doesn't mean that i could do it as well as someone with expierience. In research, top scientists get paid more money than newbies because they have years of expierience to back up all the knowledge that they got out of school.
You're right that some people will like this card and some wont. I, personally, wont. I almost never use any special features for my card. Multiple monitors? don't have it, don't need it. tv in? don't have it, don't need it. tv out? i do have this, but never use it.
I completely agree that 3 monitors will be awesome, but the problem is that each monitor is capped at 1280x1024. and if you want to play a game, then each monitor is capped at 800x600. How many people would love 3 monitors at that rez?
have you really used xmms? Sure all the people who came from windows will use WinAmp. But, XMMS is a finished product, it's been developed for years. I SERIOUSLY doubt that winamp for linux is going to be that great. Besides, it's very unlikely that winamp will be GPL'd and you know that matters to a fair number of linux users.
are you new to slashdot? The authors here are NOT journalists. They are guys. People send them interesting links and these guys might post them, might comment who knows. They do what they feel like. And, no one (except VA) can force them to become "more professional." This is infact why a lot of people like shashdot, because it isn't just the standard news, you hear about a whole lot of whacky things that the authors think is cool.
the only problem with that logic is that these componies have done nothing wrong. They created a product that can be used fairly, but is used by the record componies illegally. It's not like congress will make a law saying a product that can be used illegally is illegal...
Something tells me what i said above is too subtle for most of slashdot:/
also remember, for major componies like Blizzard, market share is more important than money. Look at MS office right now. Everyone has a copy, basicly. The reason it got in this position is that MS Office was warezed a lot more than Word Perfect (and more people got legit copies of ms office too). One of the bonuses of multiplayer games is that if enough people have the game then it adds value. By warezing a game you add value to the compony by playing it.

does anyone else get horrible echoing in the flash?
you're totally right, but in this 1 case, look who owns Mozilla. Something tells me that AOL might have a few lawyers lying around.
Well it appears that the facts prove you wrong.

lets use this logic for the hollywood side:
WIN: We now have a precedent from the courts that uses can't skip commercials
LOSE: We now have more proof to show to congress how we are losing money to piracy.
There is no such thing as an absolute good choice and absolute bad choice. It's a war, winning 1 battle can make no difference in the end.
do you know if the problem is only for hardware scsi? Since i have a CDRW, i made both my ide cdroms look like scsi using the kernel ide-scsi plugin.
