Perhaps this is the type of success that Hollywood is currently aiming for?

Actually, Gilles Tran work is used as an example of what a submission _should_ look like. In the first explanatory paragraph of TFA.

Not a dup, the story from August reported the intent to ship a then non-existent product and the original ship date was October as TFA reads. This article is about the actual shipment of the product.

  8. PIN on Feds To Have Unified Biometric Federal ID System · · Score: 1

Reading the briefing I thought they might understand security, as the writeup mentions using a PIN along with the card, however it then concludes:

"Inclusion of biometric data: Biometric mechanism equivalent to a PIN from a security architecture point of view.
User can't give away, lose, or forget his/her biometric"

true, I would not give away a finger, but it is a lot easier to cut one off a high level exec than get the PIN out of them. On the bright side, the writeup acknowledged that the "features" of biometric is open to debate" and that

"Some experts feel a card + PIN provides the same assurance level as a card + biometric"

Given soaring personal debt levels and an unprecedented trade deficit, economists (Volker, Peterson) and governmental organizations (CBO, GAO) have predicted the collapse of the US economy given these trends of spending continue. Considering the typical method to stimulate the economy is for the president to encourage consumerism with words and tax-breaks, what steps will you take to reverse the situation and prevent another depression.

This was my question, but it certainly will not be amoung the top 50 asked unless you help! Most will ask about how to make new jobs and stimulate the economy, Let us geeks ask a question does not clash with our tinfoil hats.

  14. No longer? on Shirky on Spectrum Ownership · · Score: 2, Insightful

Spectrum is treated as property and defended by law for the same reason your house is, without that law a much larger person/gov't/company would take over your home or squat on your frequency. Without local cooperation such as the FCC, cell phone companies would try to use the same frequency or jam the other guys, public bands for FRS radios would be occupied by other traffic. Local organizations, ie, FCC allow for global cooperation. Have you ever tried to use an FRS radio in Africa where spectrum rights are often undefended? Sometimes the radios work without interference, sometimes not.

When I think of Biometric ident usually fingerprints and iris's come to mind. The former is quite simple to fake as shown by gummy bears. The latters complications are discussed here, with methods ranging from simple to replacing an eye or digging one out. It seems the most secure form of ident would be through DNA, however we all know the dangers and benefits associated with cradle to grave tracking.
