  1. Hacking ovens? on Nathan Myhrvold's Recipe For a Better Oven · · Score: 4, Informative

I modded my almost new dumb oven (2 knobs and indicator light) with cast iron plates about 5 millimeters thick on top and bottom, with some additional rails to quickly remove them if necessary. The heat up process is a bit slower, but overall the oven performs way better than stock one and bakes evenly.
This is thermal mass right over heaters for even roasting/baking.
If I want crust, I just pop on the ventilator in the oven for 10 minutes before done, perfect every time.
As for bread, i pop out the plates, Heat the oven and cast iron pot with lid to 260C, pop in the bread when hot and forget about it for 45 minutes.

If he wants Tech in the oven, well let's see his ideas. At friends house they bought new $INSERT_NAME oven (overpriced around 1500€) with all the bells all over, you can't even expect to turn it on without at least reading 10 pages of the 80 pages long manual. It's super energy saving design takes like 20 minutes to heat up to 200C or ~30 minutes to 250C. For the fun of it we popped in an NTC sensor to see what's going on in heat up and baking process. Nice SLOOOW and steady heat up, then we popped in a roast. Temperature dropped around 40C then heating back up for 16 minutes, overshoot set temperature by 18C, dropped back 21C under set temp and oscillated all the way to the end. All the micro controlling in there failed with REGULAR use.
With that price tag you expect at least steady even temperature, but noooo, $INSERT_NAME decided to screw the customer with poor excuse for an oven, and telling you that you baked your stuff wrong all your life, so they decided to set you straight.
If I wanted to die of waiting I would go to DMV line...

Space is Free For All race, any nation has the right to explore, and put satelites into orbit. And if they feel so they can blow them up too. Compaired to all the US junk in orbit, that ESA, China, Russia, India and others have to avoid, plus all the natural space waste that comes to earth at far greater speeds, few blown satelites are really not rendering orbits useless.

And if US is doing something other Countries are not comfortable with (eg space weapons), US expects others to just watch and stand by unprepared? Heck no!

Playing with fire is allways dangerous, and at some point your plan can backfire badly, and space togather with Earth's satelite orbits doesnt belong to one Country on this planet, and sooner world will realise that cooperation brings greater good than semi cold war arms races, the better chances we all have to SURVIVE on this Planet.

All the comments so far stating looong load times made me do some testing, and i dont know where are you getting those 60 seconds. Let me explain...

My primay machine is AMD64 3.4+, 1Gb ram with Mandrake 10.1. And with Firefox (~10 tabs), Xmms playing, Kmail, Konsole with 6 tabs and Xchat running OpenOffice calc, draw or Writer loads well under 60 seconds, in fact it takes around 12-15 seconds.

Made me courious and i tryed same setup on Athlon 1.2 with 512ram and also Mandrake 10.1. Guess what it loaded in ~20 seconds and maybe additional 2 or 3 seconds to load ~500Kb document (calc).

The Slow loading times of OO really aren't so much of an issue, but i must addmit it sometimes gets slow on really BIG documents (some are over 30MB), which i must say those scool kids will never produce (or at least not likely).
So prove me wrong, flame me or do whatever you like, but people stating OO takes ALOT of time to load IMO are spreading FUD.

Oh and about those issues with images, well version 2 of OO solves alod of headache, and if there still will be problems the real thing is the price of Open Office that MS Office can't beat.

Sorry to spit below your post, but u are the only one who named machine specs and over 60 seconds ;(

  18. oil from animal waste != oil pumped from earth on AgroWaste to Oil a Growing Market · · Score: 2, Interesting

Short facts on oil form animal waste.

It takes alot of enery to produce it, that's true at least.

Oil produced on this method has to be thined becouse it has greater caloric output than regular oil.
For example u cant use this oil directly in your heating, simply becouse your oven can't take such high temperatures.

The best way to make use of this oil is to enrich regular oil so you burn less of it. (Company around here uses this techniqe, and it's working)

The waste that remains from production of this oil still has about 40% of energy to cover the production (if burned).

As the world started to move in MS direction, there where allways alternatives, but again hey... MS pulled it of with office suite (not that i would make any whosrhip of MS products), but companies adopted them becouse of the bundle offers, and people seemed to take the MS stuff as the default accomodation on a computer.

Take for example the scools that learned people how-to use computers... win 3.1 or later on win95 and so on... with all the way MS products... For the average John Doe it's MS all the way since then.

Novell is just making their point (better late then never), and face it MS is gonna pay them out before Court even thinks of their charges agains MS.

EU got their (a bit less than) 500 millions Eur. , for the monopoly behaviour on market in EU. And it doesn't seem to bother the Redmond giant.

IMO MS has no real problem with law inforcements, since average John Doe thinks PC can do internet browsing (IE for most of them), document or some (U name'it) text editing for Word or Office suite, and the universe of PC is named Windows.

I know most (alot) od /. readers know the alternatives (with me included), but addmit (or ague me), that most people u meet/know the internet is the blue-ish E icon on their desktop, and any formatted text is W on paper sheet...

[Left button->drag] to mark what to copy, and then just press [Middle button] or mouse wheel to paste where you want it.
