hehe apples self interest ? most consumers wouldn't know what the fuck ogg vorbis is , let alone care that they can't play it.

That is not what this is about.

It is about the people who do know what the fuck ogg vorbis is, and want it on their iPod. Instead of whining about it, they are hacking away so that they can have it.

Apple doesn't give a shit about ogg, that's what I meant about Apple's self interest - if they needed ogg to sell more, they would include it. They don't, so they don't include it.

Oh wait, I forgot that I'm not supposed to feed the trolls....

The sea retreats just before the tsunami hits because the wave is symmetrical. When the wave is out at sea, it is very deep. When the bottom of the wave hits the shallows, there is nowhere for the water to go but up. This pulls the water away from the shore as the wave builds up.

A lot of people got swept away (or dragged over the coral) because they were naturally curious when they saw the sea suddenly retreat and walked out to see what was going on, only to get hammered when the wave arrived.

The iPod doesn't need to have Ogg support just because you want it to.

Which is exactly why this is a useful project.

An OSS project like this is about being freed from Apple's self-interest.

You are right, Apple doesn't need to provide Ogg support because they are doing fine without providing it.

But if someone else wants Ogg support and is willing/capable of making it happen, they can.

Also, the iRiver (iHP-120) records. IMNSHO, this is what really sets it apart. Not just shitty little 64kbps 'voice' recording, but any bitrate on-the-fly mp3 or wav recording. With digital and analog inputs and outputs, and a suprisingly decent quality lapel microphone. As standard equipment, not an add-on that you have to buy.

Oh yeah, and upgradeable firmware as well...

So far the best (by far!) is to use KDE/Konqueror. You just put the CD in, start Konqueror, and type audiocd:/ in the URL bar.

KDE then presents different "views" of your CD (raw tracks, the whole CD as one raw track, MP3, the whole CD as MP3, OGG, etc., etc.). It even reads CDDB and does the whole tagging thing.

Then you just drag and drop the "files" that are presented in the view to where you want them, and the encoding and stuff is done on the fly. Very simple, very well integrated.
