  1. What does Nomorobo do with the call data? on How One Small Company Blocked 15.1 Million Robocalls Last Year · · Score: 1

I have looked at the Nomorobo website to see how it works, but what is not clear is what happens with all the call history? I understand that the "bad" calls get logged to improve the ability to block calls but the Nomorobo "Privacy Policy" is silent about what happens to all the data logged for the call attempts etc. Seems to me that this solution is another "Free" service to fix a problem that should not exist to begin with, and oh, by the way now there is yet another point of data collection on calls. Maybe no call "content", but the details of how many calls and from whom are now collected. And of course it's "Free" (wink).

  2. Must not yet have made it to my part of the US on ODF Support In Google Drive · · Score: 1

I do not yet see the functionality in Google Drive. In the "new" layout, there is no option to open an .odt, .ods, .odp file with the Google products Docs, Sheets, Slides. In the "old" layout of Google Drive, I can open the file, but it makes a copy of the file rather than editing the ODF based file. So it looks like I would not be able to edit the same file with the Google tools, then move to a laptop and use LibreOffice on the same file via Google Drive. In place ODF editing not there yet for me...

Thanks for the education. I had no idea. I thought it was OK because it's planned for FireFox 3.1.

I'm wondering if it will support the HTML5 stuff for Ogg Theora and Ogg Vorbis natively without any need for plugins.

But it's never been about the free MS BJ's, I think several of those were given out at various ISO meetings. It's the EULA that comes with the MS BJ that I have problem with. Who wants restrictions on or to pay a license fee for each orgasm! I personally would rather get and OpenBJ or the GNU/BJ which protects my freedoms!

  8. I'll believe it when I see it working.... on VIA Announces Open Source Driver Initiative · · Score: 4, Insightful

I'll believe it when I see the drivers working on my Ubuntu system with desktop effects active. I've tried the OpenChrome drivers and other things and nothing works with the UniChrome Pro CN400/PM880 video card that I have. Via has been very disappointing so far.

  11. Not sure about LCD quality... on Linux Tablet to be Released in Two Days · · Score: 1

Sure I want one of these babies, but I'm not getting a good feeling about the quality of the LCD. I'm of the mindset "no dead pixels" PERIOD. The user's guide has this to say: "Note: A small number of missing, discolored, or bright dots may appear on the screen. This is a characteristic of this type of display. Some displays may contain pixels or dots that remain on or off. This is normal, not a fault." http://www.nokiausa.com/support/phones/guides/1,78 40,770,00.html

"this type of display"? You mean sub-standard? I think that's BS! There are many LCDs that have no dead/half-dead pixels. I HATE that more companies are putting this kind of statement in warranties and userguides. Is there a 100% satisfaction guarantee?

Is this guy leaving because KDE is being dropped? I really like SuSE and have been using it for a while. KDE is a big part of that. I like the polish. Is there some license issue that's driving the KDE issue? What gives? I hate to go switching distros AGAIN! This is why I stopped using RedHat/Fedora.

  13. Re:What about StarBasic? on FSF, OpenOffice.org Team Reach Agreement on Java · · Score: 1

Overall with the features I've seen in 2.0, I'd rather stay at 1.1.4. I'm not that interested in "Base", I can use MySQL with an OOo front end. I'm really only interested in the improved import filters.

Still, I appreciate the informative response. It would do me well to really understand what features/functions are at play. I'm not sure at this point what limits I'll have if I install OOo 2.0 without Java.

  14. What about StarBasic? on FSF, OpenOffice.org Team Reach Agreement on Java · · Score: 1

Is StarBasic not powerful enough to use for creating wizzards and dialogs? Is there more heavy lifting that really needs Java? Or is this a matter of more people know how to code in Java vs. StarBasic?

  15. But magazines don't stop working... on How Can Companies Profit While Giving Code Away? · · Score: 3, Insightful

Lot's of people talk about the subscription model and it's benefits. Often compared to a magazine subscription. The difference is that back issues of magazines still continue to work, unlike some subscriptions of software that have time-bomb unlock codes. I think the subscription model is a bad idea for consumers.
