  1. Well its pretty simple for some drivers on OpenBSD Activism Shows Drivers Can Be Freed · · Score: 1

Certain drivers, i.e. video cards, can contain a number of pieces of proprietary information that give one company a leg up on the other (for example software optimizations, like NVidia's GPU JIT compiler)

I can understand why they wouldn't want to give away their competitive advantage.

Now other drives (network cards for example) I see no reason to not open source it.

Let's not get too caught up in 'gaming can have a positive impact' type talk, because then we must also admit to it having a potentially negative impact. Personally I happen to think it can be both, but I know I've heard a lot of people here argue against it having a negative impact on kids, and I'm willing to bet a large number of the very same people come out and irrationally proclaim gaming to be the saviour of the universe now.. And with that... back to my game

You've totally missed the point I was trying to make. There is nothing wrong with chastising manufacturers over security flaws. I have *no* problem with that. However, the tone of the article was 'IE has 15, mozilla only has 7, microsoft sucks, open source rules'. The reality of the situation is as follows: Microsoft has security holes, and we all know it. Mozilla/Firefox/etc. with their open source, open book approach has bugs as well. I guess what I'm saying is, I'm disappointed by the attitude that states, since it's open source we're happy with fewer security holes. One of the pro-open source arguements I hear all the time, is more secure, quicker bug fixes, etc. Given that, why isn't the Mozilla count at 1 or 2??? We should spend out time fixing what we have control over, rather than trash talking MS. That's how open source will win in the end. Trash talking won't do a damn thing.

Your DVD issue seems legit, but most of this stuff being broken due to close ports is hardly a glitch.. it's called security.. and I for one say kudos for doing the right thing (at least partially).

They've had oversees operations for YEARS for RD and manufacturing. If simply having overseas operations is outsourcing, then I suggest all American companies stop doing it at once.
