    I think what some people don't realize, is how hard it can be for someone who is totally disabled to jump through a bunch of hoops that the government puts up.

    What percent of those folks are so disabled they can't even get to a computer and type?

    I hope there are many, many hoops to jump through if it comes to getting a $100k+ gift from the US taxpayers. I hope it's very hard to obtain. It shouldn't be any other way.

    I will also point out that private companies routinely do the same thing with people who they know aren't going to pay them. They write off the loss and move on.

    Uh, no. They sell your debt to a collection agency who's business it is to squeeze you until you pay.

    You see, if YOU are going to make an argument, the burden isn't on me to prove your point. If you want to make baseless statements, well, good for you, but you aren't going to convince too many people that way. I had assumed incorrectly that you posted here to try and make a point, not just waste the Internet's bits. My mistake.

    Even if they managed to get on permanent and total disability, that $250K would be fully taxable as income, so you're just swapping one creditor (the DoE) for another (the IRS) who also makes it very difficult to forgive debt.

    If I get $250k in income, I don't pay $250k in taxes (duh).

    From what friends have told me, Sallie Mae and the like are absolutely merciless, calling 20 times a day, calling your neighbors and friends, etc. and harassing you.

    Yes that tends to happen when you take money, sign a contract to repay it, then don't. The same thing would happen if I didn't pay my mortgage or credit card bill or any other financial obligation. Welcome to the Real World where people are expected to be responsible.

    I'd recommend that no one base a decision on anecdotal evidence, based on ONE sample.

    37M outstanding student loans. 380K disabilities. 1% of all student loan holders have disabilities? 1 out of a 100 student loan holders are disabled to the point where they can't work at all, even the white collar jobs they should have trained for at university?

    It seems unlikely to me that successful disability fraud would be all that common, because it's so damn difficult to get disability payments with a genuine disability

    If you want a status symbol or expect a magical capability, then you will be disappointed.

    That's exactly the problem. Reset your expectations and you'll probably enjoy a smartwatch. Primarily it's a watch (with custom faces, which makes it more interesting). It can show you notifications. It has a very few useful apps (mainly because of the screen size).

    If you aren't willing to understand the product past reading "watch" in the name, maybe you haven't done enough to research to comment? Smart watches are wrist computers. If all you want is to see the time, smart watches aren't for you, duh.

    In all fairness, Yahoo was already fucked before clueless Marissa got there. Yahoo is so completely irrelevant it's highly unlikely that anyone can turn it around.

    Yeah it was f'ed, but she was paid a shit-ton of money based on the assumption she could do something about it. It's not like no-harm no-foul here. The foul is that they heavily compensated her for an ultimate failure.

    Because Verizon has delusions of grandeur.

    Yahoo over the last ten (?) years has gone through multiple restructuring, re-organizations, re-prioritization, etc., and failed all of them. Verizon though thinks through their managerial prowess, they'll be able to turn Yahoo into something profitable. It's narcissism in the extreme. Yahoo may not have been managed well, but Verizon? What's Verizon? A company that has succeeded due to the anti-competitive landscape of the US wireless market, and not much else.

    They don't care that it takes hours or days to close a transaction, because they are not really on board with the idea that bitcoins can be used like money. They only see it as an investment.

    That doesn't make sense.

    Someone that's interested in bitcoin as an investment would care dearly about anything that would lessen the flow of chumps investing. If people get scared, or can't use their 'coin as currency, they are going to sell, causing the value to go down and deflating the holdings of the investors. Investors only win if the public is confident in bitcoin.

    San Jose has the highest cost of living in the nation (higher than Manhattan). A 1500 sq ft home a quarter mile from Gangland USA goes for $750k before it's bid up by people offering cash + $50k over asking.

    Exactly, salary transparency has nothing to do with salary negotiation. Knowing everyone's salary doesn't mean you still can't negotiate your salary. In fact, usually after it's all public, people start negotiating.

    Sure they encourage negotiations, but they tightly bound the upper range. When faced with the choice of keeping their existing employees happy, and upsetting them by paying the new guy more than them, what will they choose? The result is that industry wages will move to the middle.

    If they are an underperforming employee, that should make you happy. If you are a superstar, not so much.
