On the PC, Quicktime is a good bit worse than VLC, but is still very much usable (unlike the ill-fated Windows Media Player for mac). I think not... Quicktime on Windows ranks only slightly below RealPlayer in the "most annoyingly bad media players" charts... I seriously think that Microsoft and Apple should have some sort of covenant where they agree not to write software for each others platforms, and to fully support the other's stuff in their own products. Like have iTMS working in WMP, and... whatever the MS equivalent is working in iTunes/Safari.
For a company that has such great hardware and OS, they sure don't don't make it seem all that appealing, judging from the core software's Windows versions...
Multimedia works just great on my Windows XP machine. Could someone explain to me in a not too technical way, just why BeOs was significant? Because it was just as good at "Multimedia" as XP is, when it first came out. Back when everybody was migrating from Win95 to Win98.
It's also inherently multithreading capable - again, not so much of a feature these days, but eight or nine years ago, it was a Big Thing. It was a completely new idea for an OS - none of this silly "if it ain't broke, don't change it" mentality of *nix - or for that matter, the "it's broken, so let's break it some more" attitude of MS/Windows. BeOS was a completely new OS in just about every way you could think of. It's just a shame Palm doesn't feel like giving away the source...
I know it's one of UNIXoids, but how does it differ from others? Is there something called a Bnu? Not that it matters, because it wouldn't be a recursive acronym anyway - BeOS is not Unix. It's not even a "Unixoid". About all it really has in common with Unix is, well, POSIX compliance...
When federal elections come around, they usually coincide with local elections, and often voters do get direct power to vote locally on referendums, state constitution issues, etc. So, the ballot the avg. person gets, in each city, can contain on some voting days (local voting way more often that national voting)...some people may have a ballot, that has city issues, state issues, local officials running for office, state officials running for office, federal officials running for office, etc. So, the ballots are not the same at all often even for 2 cities during the same elections period. Aha.. thankyou for pointing that out to us outsiders. Here in Australia, Federal, State and Local elections, and plebiscites/referendums are all staggered so they almost never coincide with each other... possibly an idea for the US to take on board>:)
...than my real name. Hence, when I change my surname next year (for family reasons), I am also changing my middle name to "unfunk".
Also, I found out that the first & last name I will have when this happens is the name of a female softcore porn starlet. Stupid parents, giving me an effeminate name...
So exactly what's wrong with integrated audio/video? Absolutely nothing. At least that's what my wallet's opinion. I agree 100% - but from the viewpoint of somebody that prefers discreet hardware solutions, then integrated peripherals are kinda pointless.
I'd even extend this viewpoint to onboard ethernet if it weren't so damned hard to get a decent hardware NIC these days...
...and on that note, I have a SB Vibra 128 that I bought for $20aud about six years ago that has vastly, vastly superior MIDI sounds than the vile DLS crap that my Audigy (and all other modern cards) uses. While I was studying Music Composition at uni, I actually ran both cards specifically so I could use the MIDI soundset of the Vibra.
...there's no real advantage to using both slots at full x16 rating though - videocards these days aren't even saturating the AGP 8x bus, let alone PCIe x16. I remember an article on Tom's Hardware, back when PCIe cards first came out where they actually taped over some of the contacts, to make x8, x4 x2, and x1 electrical connections... if my memory serves me correctly (I could really use an ECC chip in my brain...), there was no performance degradation until they got down to x2 connections.
I'm sure it's still in their archives if you want to go look it up for yourself...
I only see one PCIE x16... There are 2 x16 physical slots, but only one of them is actually x16 electrical. Is this the end for SLI/Crossfire? Unlikely. Remember that initially, putting your motherboard into SLI mode split the x16 channel into two x8 ones...
Is that really so hard? Integrated video is easy enough to avoid, but you just can't get a motherboard these days that doesn't have onboard audio. I'm sick of having to disable it whenever I get a new board, and the amount of space the jacks take up on the rear panel could be better used for more USB or Firewire ports.
I use an old Soundblaster Audigy for my sound needs, and it does everything I need. In hardware. Every time I buy a new motherboard, I test the onboard audio first, just to see if it's gotten any better than I last tried it.
So far, this card's lasted me four complete system overhauls, and at this rate, will last until a version of Windows comes out that where Creative don't release drivers for it.
I can only reply with what I already said: dead composers probably don't give a duck about that.
I'm a bit fuzzy about the difference you're trying to make between composers and artists. For me a composer is a bona fide artist. Must be a weakness in my English language skills. Well, I'm a composer, and I recognise that I probably won't be making much money off my music during my lifetime. My kids though, may well have the distinction of saying "yeah, that unfunk fellow was my dad" and thus, I'm all for them getting money from my work.
As to the distinction I'm trying to make, well, it's pretty simple.
I write music. A String Quartet or an Orchestra will (hopefully) perform it. It may even get recorded. When it's released, it will be titled something along the lines of "unfunk's second symphony. Performed by the Suchandsuch Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Whatshisname"
Britney Spears, on the other hand, performs music (and I use the term loosely) written by somebody else. It's always Britney's song though, and not the-person-who-wrote-it's. That person got paid their songwriting fee, and that's that (I think).
The point I'm trying to make is that the Classical Music world is like the reverse of the pop music world, and that Pop Artists aren't really 'artists'...
Having said all that though, I'd be pretty pissed off with a corporation making decisions on my dead behalf.. especially as I've been giving my scores away to anybody that will play them for as long as I've been writing music.
actually, the income from this sort of music usually goes to the composer's estate. We're talking about Composers here, not "artists" that have producers and songwriters.
I got my N70 from Virgin Mobile (Australia), and it was unlocked. The only carrier down here that participates in irreversible locking is Three.. everywhere else that sells locked phones (Optus, for example) will unlock it for you either for a fee, or for free after your contract period is up... not to mention that the only Locked phones from these providers are the pre-paid variety.
If you do a slipstream install, you can do it all, unattended. Not quite. Every customer will probably have a different hardware configuration, so you can't really do a slipstream install of everything - just Windows + updates.
That still takes nearly an hour off the total install time though..:)
If it took 1-2 hours to plug in and configure a DVD player, and the TV couldn't work without one, I'd expect the TV to be bundled with one.
Um, let's see. Pop in a live CD or plug in a live USB key and the computer is instantly usable. that's akin to saying that the afore-mentioned TV will be fine with just the included indoor antenna, and free-to-air TV
I want a computer without Windows!! Where can I buy one...?
Answer: I can't. What, you don't have independent computer stores in the US? Every time I see one of these stories about people not wanting Windows with their PCs, I get all confused. You see, here in Australia, if I want a new computer, I can call any one of my local (or interstate/online) retailers and ask for precisely what I want. That is, I don't ask for Windows, then I don't get it.
Which is good, because I've never asked for it.
seriously dude, ketamine has been replaced by numerous less-harmful drugs for literally all of it's applications. Just because a medication has been superseded in many (or all) applications, doesn't mean that it's no longer of any use. Witness Thalidomide: Originally prescribed to combat morning sickness in pregnant women (with horrific results) with absolutely no evidence to suggest that it was really anything more than a placebo, it was subsequently withdrawn from market. Now, it's being used in a number of studies into other, unrelated potential benefits of it.
Regarding Ketamine though, Wikipedia sez:
Since it suppresses breathing much less than most other available anaesthetics, ketamine is still used in human medicine as a first-choice anaesthetic for victims with unknown medical history (e.g. from traffic accidents), in podiatry and other minor surgery, and occasionally for the treatment of migraine. There is ongoing research in France, Russia, and the U.S. into the drug's usefulness in pain therapy, depression suppression, and for the treatment of alcoholism and heroin addiction. Looks to me as though it still has a use or two...
For a company that has such great hardware and OS, they sure don't don't make it seem all that appealing, judging from the core software's Windows versions...
I just use VLC as my default video player and be done with it. It plays practically everything without need of any silly codecs to be installed...
It's also inherently multithreading capable - again, not so much of a feature these days, but eight or nine years ago, it was a Big Thing. Pointless; yes. Interesting; yes. Just Plain Fun; DEFINITELY!!
I think you missed the joke...

Wow, something's definitely very wrong there; I currently have fifteen tabs open in FF3b1, and it's "only" using 230MB...
Mind you, back when I was a lad, Netscape 4.0 ran fine on Win95 with 24MB RAM total...
I'd even extend this viewpoint to onboard ethernet if it weren't so damned hard to get a decent hardware NIC these days...

* No integrated Audio

President x Bush: How do I turn God Mode on in this damn war?

I agree.. This really needs explanation for the rest of us slashdotting folks...

Forgive me, I am teh drunken intertubes user.
...and a shiny thing
What I meant to say was 'is "apt-get update install xasd fdsix ikispkg mnfklsad --v" that much better than "click, click, click, click, click"?'
But then I got distracted by LOLcats, and by extension, LOLrats.
