How can people be allowed to get away with this sort of thing? I can understand a leader wrongfully convincing his country to go to war. To convince thousands of people to sacrafice their lives for NOTHING. I can understand the Dawg-eat-dawg environment that our government works in and how winning an argument can seem more important than what the argument stands for. What I can't understand is how, at the end of the day, when we've destroyed the majority of the ecosystems on our planet; and millions of people have died of famine, disease and displacement. All we had to do was listen to the people who's job it was to forsee these events in nature! The vast majority of the scientific community beleives that we are going to cause major environmental unrest if things remain the way they are... So naturally it makes sense for bush to ignore things like the kyoto protocol right? I wonder if he ignores his military advisors in the same fashion? Certainly seems that way. The leader of our nation is a friggin child and is going to be responsible for countless deaths, decades of misery, pain and suffering. I hope he gets what he deserves. Alas, the world doesn't work that way. He'll probably be the hero in the end.

If this fusion thing were to miraculously work and we did have a new source of energy, we'd be in the exact same place as the current oil crisis... We'd have to mine for boron-11. And since, like all matter on this planet, it is finite in quantity, we'll eventually have to depend on countries like Turkey for our boron. The same goes for the ITER http://www.iter.org/ technology... they need lithium to generate the fuels required by the device, and eventually, we'll run out of lithium. This is complete bullshit. We should be focusing on ways to store electrical energy more efficiently and working towards more efficient solar technologies.

  13. thermovoltaics on Solar Power Becoming More Affordable · · Score: 3, Interesting

One thing I really wish would happen is that the efficiency of thermovoltaic technology could somehow be improved... Think about how much energy is wasted as heat; eventually all of it, I suppose. I actually heat my bedroom in the winter with my PC. When I read about large scale solar facilities, I can't help but wonder at the losses in heat that are going on there. There are more efficient ways of utilizing solar power right now anyway: http://www.stirlingenergy.com/ comes to mind... and they work pretty well. It would be nice, however, to move the technology to solid state like we have with photovoltaic cells; That way we could apply them to things like brake shoes on cars, the condensers on refrigerators and air conditioners, etc... -Photovoltaic paint has been invented, but is not realistic yet. I think that's where the future is: Objects that need electricity should become more efficient, and should have photo/thermovoltaic technology built right into them.

My personal favorite is when 4 years ago bush announced that U.S. Oil comsumption was a way of life and that he would never let that change... then a couple years later he tells us that wer're addicted to oil and need to kick the habit. The hypocracy and bold faced lying that went on in this administration astounds me.

This is actually pretty cool... I'm starting to feel like the computer industry is warming up to the prospect of modular parallelization "at home".
We are reaching a point where quantum tunneling could become a real problem and frankly, I was hoping this would happen sooner... The industry always focused on things getting smaller, but we're running into a barrier in that direction.
Now we're starting to see the opposite: instead of buying a brand new system as an upgrade, all you need to do is add to the existing one. It makes your computer more like an investment and less like a fruit that will inexorably go bad or turn into poo... like a console.
So now we wait... I really want to see processors with sockets built into their tops so you can stack them as a modular upgrade. Likewise with GPUs, RAM, etc... SOrry, that's the little kid in me. We can dream.
