How many people who drive cars on a daily basis can describe the basics of what is going on in the engine? (And, I should point out - cars are much more mature technology than computers - simpler and generally better understood)...
That attitude, which is effectively equivalent to the RTFM attitude many people in the open source community take towards operating system interface design, is IMO the singular biggest obstacle to widespread linux adoption.
I would have agreed with your argument had beavis88 been talking about users being able to service/upgrade their own computers. Instead, he simply said people should take the time to learn how to use their tools. The majority of people might not know dick about how the engine in their car works, but one could argue that most know how to operate their vehicle. I'm sure there are plenty of exceptions, but how many times have you seen someone fiddling around in the trunk of a car when they're trying to figure out how to turn on the windshield wipers?
I agree with the GP. If people want to be part of the 21st century and are going to invest the resources into owning/using a computer then, like operating a vehicle, hammer, or table saw, they should be expected to learn how to use it.
And sure enough, if you read the comments to the blog, there is a site called http://md5.rednoize.com/ that reveals that the hash is "Anthony." So although Google helped, there appears to be resources online for it (if you don't have your own Rainbow Table mega database).
I wish there was a limit on the number of terms one is allowed to serve in House and Senate, or pretty much any public position. I think we would be much better off if people weren't allowed to become career politicians. Even those who start out with the noblest of intentions eventually become corrupted by their own power or the dump trucks full of money constantly being offered to them by big business. Needless to say, all this power and money being thrown around draws all the crazy power-bent mad-men out of the woodwork. If no one was allowed to hold an office for more than two or three terms then our elected officials would be less susceptible to corruption and we'd have less sociopaths in office and more normal people who want to represent their community.
I know I would love a torrent client that did everything mentioned above and didn't consume system resources on par with Windows Vista. The main reason I use uTorrent is because it has such a small footprint but also a decent amount of advanced options. Feature-bloat can be tempting, but performance and footprint should not be forgotten.
I recently formatted my old Ubuntu drive and installed Gutsy on it as well. Almost everything went well with the install, and it detected Windows on another drive and allowed me to copy some settings, etc. What annoys me is the fact that there was no plain and obvious way to configure GRUB during the install. Once Ubuntu figured out what partition to install itself on it didn't ask me any questions about which OS to list first by default on the boot list, etc. On top of that, my "Ubuntu 7.10" option on the GRUB menu list was configured incorrectly. The installer formatted and copied Ubuntu onto hd3, but in the GRUB menu it was set to boot from hd1. It gave me a "system cannot mount this volume" error every time. I mean WTF? Once I figured it out it wasn't a huge pain to fix but I still think it never should have been an issue. It also annoys me that I have to edit the menu list file and manually move all the Windows text to the top to make it the default option. I also can't seem to figure out how to get Ubuntu to automatically mount my NTFS drives. I've searched around and played with fdisk but as of yet I have had no luck. I'm sure a lot of people around here would consider that a trivial and almost stupid issue to have, but I still haven't been able to get it to work.
I have my degree in CS but I don't have too much experience with Linux (use Windows at work and at home for games). Usually I can figure out how to solve whatever annoying little problems I run into while using Linux because I at least sort of know what I'm doing. What about those average users? How hard would it be to add a little menu dialog that lets you choose what the default timeout boot option should be?
Other than that, I love 7.10 and I've already began trying to figure out what it will take for me to switch over 100% from Windows.
I don't mean to troll here, but what exactly was the point of linking to the Wikipedia article about England? I didn't see the word "maths" anywhere on that page. So again, I'm just wondering how exactly that supports your argument. Is it common knowledge in England that people in England use the word? I've never heard anyone say "maths" nor had I seen anyone write it before I started reading/.
Then again, before I started reading/. I never realized how much people enjoyed over using the phrase "order of magnitude". Now I read that phrase so often that I can't help but suspect this is all the work of Dr. Klahn and his fighting force of "extraordinary magnitude".
...switch to Ubuntu, download VMWare Server (free as in beer), install your Windows license in a VM...
Yeah... I spent about three hours trying to do just this the other day. I wasn't even able to get the VM to boot from the Windows install CD. I tried following a couple of different tutorials that were very helpful but I was never able to get the config file working. I think my problem is that I have a mixture of IDE and SATA devices and no one seems to take this into consideration when writing a walkthrough to set up anything in Linux. It took me about two hours to get Grub to work correctly for the exact same reason. My point is that while you can sum up the steps to independence from Windows in one sentence in reality things are nowhere near as simple as you claim.
Correct, but nicotine is what keeps you addicted. They say it is as addictive as cocaine or heroine. From the Wikipedia article:
Modern research shows that nicotine acts on the brain to produce a number of effects. Specifically, its addictive nature has been found to show that nicotine activates reward pathways--the circuitry within the brain that regulates feelings of pleasure and euphoria...
The net effect is an increase in reward pathway sensitivity, opposite of other drugs of abuse (namely cocaine and heroin, which reduces reward pathway sensitivity).
Everyone knows smoking is bad for you and despite any feeling of euphoria you get from cigarettes/cigars/tobacco in general you can pretty much feel the negative effects building up over time. Yet people continue to slowly kill themselves. I would compare my own personal experience with being addicted to slowly twisting a knife in your gut while drowning yourself. Yet I keep coming back.
Anyway, my point is that all positive effects aside, anything that addictive just scares me. Hopefully I'm scared enough to never go back.
My point is that it isn't just the Americans who need to be told that American laws do not apply in other countries. It is the leaders of other countries who allow American officials to impose their will that need to be reminded as well.
The moral is.. HECK! you still need a moral to stop using proprietary software after it's so clear how it's screwing you?
I think the moral of your story is that both products are crap. On the one hand you have a buggy Windows MCE machine that is more restrictive but easier for beginners to use. On the other hand you have the option of buying a computer, downloading and installing some variation of Linux and MythTV/Freevo, making sure your video card has Linux drivers, etc.
I still don't have a PVR because neither of those solutions work for me. I don't really feel like using Microsoft's bloated media center that tells me what I can and cannot watch. I also don't have the time or patience to spend countless hours installing Linux and trying to get MythTV to work with whatever distro I have installed with whatever 3rd party video input card I'm using.
Attention Americans: Your laws do not apply outside your borders.
It always irritates me whenever someone says something as idiotically obvious as this and gets modded up for being informative or insightful. Obviously those of us who actually read/. and would see your comment already know this. I highly doubt that anyone who would actually need to be educated in this regard (US Congress/Senate, executive branch, etc) would actually stumble upon your post here. I really don't see how this is informative.
P.S
Attention non-Americans: You are not American
Please mod me informative now.
I already know your opinion on the subject, but I personally see nothing wrong with celebrating the death of someone who has worked for many years to pay off and influence the government to take away my rights for no reason other than to guarantee profits.
What if I don't even type my password? I keep some of my more difficult to remember passwords stored in Password Safe. This allows me to simply copy and paste those annoying passwords that are impossible to remember.
if there are more women signing up than men I don't think they should spend time or money trying to make fashion design more butch.
They don't. They don't try to attract more men into ANY field of study. Do we ever hear about the declining number of men majoring in Women's Studies? Women and men are different. We don't always share the same interests or have the same strengths or skills. Trying to say there is a problem because there are less women than men in a particular field of study is insulting.
From the article:
when high school girls think of computer scientists they think of geeks, pocket protectors, isolated cubicles and a lifetime of staring into a screen writing computer code.
This image discourages members of both sexes, but the problem seems to be more prevalent among women. "They think of it as programming," Dr. Cuny said. "They don't think of it as revolutionizing the way we are going to do medicine or create synthetic molecules or study our impact on the climate of the earth."
If someone is going to shy away from computer science because the social stigma of being only for nerds, then fuck 'em. Let them study something "cool" like communications or business. Why would you want to convince someone to join your program if the main thing stopping them is that they don't want to be a "nerd"? If you truly have passion for the subject then you wouldn't give a shit about stupid social labels. After all, isn't that why most of us are (still) here?
I'll admit right now that I hate NoScript. It annoys the hell out of me when I have to manually allow every single script that might be necessary to view a certain web page. I could set it to allow all by default and then block the malicious scripts, but I can already do that with adblock.
This is bullshit. Star Wars makes a huge political statement whether George Lucas meant to or not. If you don't believe me, watch ALL 6 Star Wars movie in the order that they were released. You end up with the following pattern:
A rebellion defeats an empire and becomes a republic which becomes an empire...
Reminds me of a similar story from the real world:
A rebellion defeats an empire and becomes a democratic-republic which becomes an empire...
If you don't agree with me, thats fine, but I think the message is there, even if it was an accident.
I'd like to start it playing background music, turn off the music in a game and play a game, without listening to "call to battle" or whatever the track is, over and over and over.
You can do this with the 360. Just the other day I was playing Dead Rising while streaming Ænema from my PC.
I'm pretty sure the average person knows you need oxygen to breathe.
At least you would hope so. Although, if the average idiot didn't know they needed oxygen to breathe I think we'd all have felt a great disturbance as all of congress dropped dead.

I have to agree with everyone else so far, pass the Salt.

They certainly don't kill as many people as cars.

It's probably not within the spirit of the law, but there's probably a local sodomy law or disorderly conduct law that could be "stretched to fit"...
Actually, sodomy was legalized in Texas sometime within the past couple of years.
