Texas is 48th in education out of the 50 states that comprise the United States of America. They hardly represent the entire country. But hey, at least you got your +5, America Bashing mod
Sharon can use bathroom A. Mike can use bathroom B. Sharon will be scolded for using bathroom B. Mike will be arrested and labeled a sex offender for life for using bathroom A.
It might only be an extra 1% uptime per incident, but when the same thing keeps happening year after year, it begins to add up. Hurricane Ike left people without power for months. And what did they do? They hung up cheap crappy power lines on poles to replace the cheap crappy ones that snapped. We have hurricanes here on a regular basis, so at some point is has to be cheaper to simply bury the damn cables instead of replacing them all the time.
Given the quality of the wires they use around here, I'm just glad it never really freezes in the winter, because the ice would probably snap all the un-buried lines in the greater Houston area.
The scare quotes are propaganda, designed to make people question the veracity of the accuser's claims
As opposed to the claims themselves being used to question the accused's character. What I'm getting out of this entire situation is that if a government doesn't like you, all it takes to be arrested/extradited is for two women to present claims of being raped without any proof whatsoever. I'm not saying these accusations aren't true, but the reason we "jingoist" English speakers define rape the way we do from a legal standpoint is because there usually is actual evidence of it on the woman's body that can be detected.
Also, I've never heard jingoism used in the context of a language spoken in many different countries. Just to double check, Webster's defines it as "extreme chauvinism or nationalism marked especially by a belligerent foreign policy". Or does that definition not count since its in English?
Its been said that governments should fear their people, and not the other way around. What do our governments have to fear from us nowadays? Some people might put up a fight, but the overwhelming majority just sit back and go along for the ride.
I hate to say it since we're supposedly living in more civilized times, but maybe if more politicians who obviously have no interest in actually representing the people (not corporations) they "represent" were brutally assassinated, the rest would get the message. I may be wrong, but it seemed to work for some in the past...
Back in my university days before I was 21, I went to a gas station with a girl I was dating who was 21. The clerk refused to sell her beer (just a six-pack), despite her having a valid ID showing that she was of legal age, because she was with "minors" (he never checked my ID). We weren't even talking about drinking together.
None of my Bank of America debit cards have ever had NFC chips in them. I'm not sure about their credit cards. There are plenty of reasons to hate BoA, but at least this isn't one of them (so far).
Seriously, why is it perfectly ok for men to dominate the fields that require basically nothing more than being a workhorse, yet If the field in question requires any amount of intelligence, then study after study must be performed to determine why there aren't as many women?
I agree with you on principle, but principles aren't shelter or food. My wife was an English teacher at a local district that has basically been overtaken by the parents. The district forced her to resign after some disruptive little shit caused a scene, then lied to his parents about the entire story. They then hired a lawyer who went to every media outlet in town to further spread these lies while my wife was never allowed to tell her side (district orders). The district originally supported my wife, but because of the bad publicity and the fear of a lawsuit, they did a complete 180 and gave her the option of resigning or being terminated immediately. She wasn't even allowed to bring her union representative into the meeting. She ended up finding a new job at a private school where the kids who attend actually want to be there, but she's had to take a 40% pay cut.
Most schools are just daycare centers now, and its going to get a lot worse before it gets any better.
Show some balls and fight. Then people might see that you actually care about education, and will be more willing to invest in education. As long as you continue doing nothing, nobody's going to give you more money.
You obviously don't know anything about the world of teaching, at least not anything about how it works down in the South where unions are powerless. The nail that sticks up gets hammered down, hard. Teachers have been getting laid off left and right recently. If a teacher stands up and puts the district at risk of a lawsuit, they will be out of there faster than reality can crush the spirit of the fresh-faced idealistic graduate hired to replace them.
In order to carry a concealed weapon in Texas, you need to take a class and pass a proficiency test. There are different classes of CC licenses, eg. revolver, small caliber, etc.
Technically it may be legal to carry a weapon that isn't concealed, but unless you are on private property or at a firing range, expect to have the police show up with their guns drawn.
I own several guns, none of which I carry for personal protection or even for hunting. I simply like to go to the range and shoot paper or clay targets, along with the occasional watermelon.
People like you remind me of the high school teacher that punishes the entire class by not allowing anyone to go to the bathroom because a few idiots used the opportunity to take a smoke break.
Take away the subscribers and even if you can never find the source, at least the businesses stop getting paid and hopefully do less abuse to children.
That logic didn't work very well during Prohibition, and it isn't working in the War on Drugs either. Granted, my examples have a lot more moral ambiguity than child pornography, but historically, chasing the recipients of an illicit good isn't as effective as hunting down the source. Its just easier.
Women refuse to work in the tech industry because of sexual harassment. Unfortunately, the field becomes dominated by men who don't understand it, which then perpetuates the alienation cycle
Do we actually have any evidence of this? It seems like every other week there is another article attempting to explain why there aren't enough women in the various tech/science industries.
I love all of these articles and arguments about how teachers' unions are responsible for stymieing education in the US. Come down south to Texas sometime. The teachers' unions here are completely powerless, and our education system is still one of the worst in the entire country.
or what if all your kids never do homework and never study because their parents don't care?
In Texas, teachers get admonished for having more than a certain number of F's in their classes. It doesn't matter if all of your low grades are from kids who simply refuse to do any work, teachers will end up having to raise their grade averages to avoid being fired.
Most places I have been to in NYC do not offer free refills on anything but tap water. Even big chains like Wendys or McDonalds don't necessarily have free refills.
This article would suggest that police are not trained on how to deal with dogs. They usually carry mace, tasers, etc, but it seems they almost always go straight for the gun. I'm not sure what kind of training most police receive regarding handling situations involving pets, but I'd argue that this is most likely a case of Hanlon's razor.
I'm finishing up my MBA this week, and my program required at least one statistics course. The amount of math you run into also depends on your area of focus. I've been focusing more on the business modeling and data mining side, both of which require a fair amount of math knowledge.
Wait wait wait, did you really just suggest that if someone steals your car, and you didn't regularly maintain your brakes which leads to the thief being involved in an accident, that you the owner are liable? Can you cite a precedent that would justify this assertion, because this sounds like the biggest load of horseshit I've ever heard.
9/11 was a tragic event, but never forgotten? Why? what does remembering it teach us? I don't see any important lesson in it. Bad shit happens? Sometimes a few dedicated people will fuck shit up for other people?
How about never forgetting that acting like a bunch of imperialist fucks will piss people off to the point of staging attacks that kill thousands of innocents. How about remembering that people with power and a lust for more of it will use tragedies like this to strip away more of our rights in order to secure even more power and wealth for themselves? Aside from the sensationalist nationalistic nonsense, there are plenty of lessons from 9/11 that the American public should never forget.

Just out of curiosity, do you happen to live in a US state along the southern border?

I'm sick of parallel Bender lauding his cowboy hat over me!
I also have no sense of humor. Where are my Insightful mods?

Same here. There is a little heart that says "donor" on the bottom right corner next to your eye color.
