  1. Re:They're more environmentally friendly on Microsoft Plans Deliberate Xbox 360 Shortage · · Score: 1

So we ended up putting in two 60mm fans, and we came up with a water-cooled heat sink as well for the CPU. We've actually applied for a patent on that one. He goes on to decribe a setup where water under reduced pressure boils in the hot part, and condenses in the fins. Two questions: Can such an old invention really be patented, and what happens when you stand the thing up on it's side or upside down?

I'm not married to Nick Park. He's the "Wallace and Gromit" guy. I was citing him up as an example of a producer of video shorts that that made the big time.

My wife is a musician who self-produces her albums. She's now making more money through a handful of songs on Itunes than by selling her CDs. This great outlet is now (or should soon be) available to independant video producers. Watch out for the next Nick Park on iTMS.

  10. No Sense of humor? Huh? on Looking Back On Looking Forward · · Score: 1

Kubrick's only flaws as a filmmaker are that he had no sense of humor

You're kidding, right? 2001 is full of tongue-in-cheek stuff. Example: A streamlined spacecraft slowly approaches and enters a rotating space station to Strauss's 'Blue Danube' waltz. It's an echo of the opening sequence in Dr. Strangelove, where a B-52 couples up to a tanker plane with romantic music. I nearly spat out my popcorn when I saw that.

Two hours? Sounds like your computer is more of a portable than a real laptop. So yeah, go for the fast, hot CPU. My neighbor has a "laptop" like that. Whenever he carries it across the room he takes the power brick along and plugs in. Not much good for cross country flights, though. You'll even be looking for somewhere to plug it in at your local coffee shop, if you ever do the working-at-the-cafe thing. Usage profiles vary.

  13. Re:Contrast Ratio (photographically) on Sharp LCD Display with 1,000,000:1 Contrast Ratio · · Score: 1

In photography terms, 1,000,000:1 is about 20 "stops" (doublings of light intensity), whereas 100,000:1 is about 17 stops.

As a comparison, photographic film can register about a 10-stop range (less for color) within a single exposure. For normal usage, it might be hard to tell this difference between these two screens, but for a movie editor it might be important to see the extremes just a little better.

we should have half the solar system under our belt by now.

You realize, of course, that after Mars, there's a distinct shortage of viable places for people to go. Venus is hot enough to melt led, and all those moons around the gas giants take years to get to. They are also extemely cold and dark. Leave them to the robots.

Even public domain music can be copyrighted, in it's sheet music form. The copyright applies to the edition, which is usually re-typeset and does not look like the original score. If it were a photocopy of the original score, it would be public domain.
AFAIK, this copyright on the sheet music does not carry over to any recordings made from it.
