I can remember my Win95 registration code, which I haven't used for years, yet I never remember when I have to go to class or work. Bah, biochemical storage is so unreliable.
Well after "machine intelligences starts improving itself" our new mechanical overlords will probably outlaw GUIs; defining them as a waste of processing power.
Well the villagers in Austria apparently. But seriously; if they make interesting shows people will watch it, I would at least. Just because a show is on a major channel doesn't automatically mean its any good. And just because it's on public access doesn't automatically mean that it sucks. Though the larger networks have bigger budgets and their shows are more polished, in my opinion many of those shows are soulless. I would rather watch a low quality show that's interesting, then a high quality show that's boring. Anyway, that's just my point of view.
What I want to know is how they decided what's suited and what's unsuited for these shows. What kind of regulation do they have concerning profanity, sex and violence?
What I don?t understand is how "Grafedia Elevates Graffiti To Art", some graffiti might be already defined as art. But graffiti links are just links, not art. Of course the target of the link might be art, but a link is just a link.
....everybody seems to be defending their mp3 player I though I should defend mine. Personally I have a Sony Network Walkman NW-MS70D which I think is great. It's small, light, good battery time and great storage. Right now I have about eight different play lists, all about the length on a normal cd (and I could probablly have at least a couple more). Given; the quality is lower than what you could get with an iPod, but I only use it when I?m moving around so quality isn't the biggest issue. When I want to listen to Jazz I do it in the comforts of my own home.
Anyway, you should probably consider your need and budget before buying an mp3 player (wow really? Oh my yes). I have friends with iPods and whatnots that doesn't really use them that much. If your going to buy an expensive player make sure your going to use it first, and that you're not just buying one to have one.
I was simply trying to make the point that while Al Gore didn't create the internet, he did make a significant contribution to getting it off the ground during its early years. I wasn't trying to be a troll or flaimbait. Simply trying to make a point at a joke I though was in poor taste. So if anyone was offended by my post, I can't see why, then I apologize, I was not my intention to hurt.
I think that's a very uninformed opinion, because as I understand it this isn't completely Troikas fault. For instance; Vampire Bloodlines was completed months before it was released because of having to wait for HL2. In that time the Troika team tried to get funding to give the game some much needed polish, the publisher however couldn't be bothered.
Secondly I would like to say that I though Arcanum was a very good game, and I found VtM: Bloodlines very entertaining despite a serious lack of polish.
So in my opinion the team was simply a victim of bad luck and bad politics.
I know it's fun to make Microsoft jokes here on Slashdot, but are they really at fault this time?
Yes, because playing embedded clips isn't the issue here. The problem with playing embedded clips is just part of the sabotage that the Commission suspects Microsoft of doing.
The way I see it sabotage isn't just deliberate malignant tampering, but also deliberate omission of essential re-coding.
Then there's the question if Microsoft is required to make Windows work, and fix these registry problems. After all the Commission insisted on a fully function Windows without the Media Player, registry problems indicate that Windows is in fact not fully functioning.
Discussing the whether or not there's need to play video inside a word document is pretty irrelevant. The question here is if Microsoft deliberately sabotaged their software.
Now if you read the article is clearly states that:
"that video clips embedded into Microsoft Word documents don't run properly, for example." Notice there at the end "for example," that means it's just one example. Now most likely they have other issues as well. Further more that particular quote as attributed to a report in the Wall Street Journal, and not in fact a spokesperson for the European Commission.
Actually I'm using Word, to iron out most of my spelling errors, and then copying and pasting. As a browser I am using Opera. The reasons there where question marks is because it's three at night here and am a bit tired. So if you find them offensive, I apologize.
As much as I hate spam, I would still fight to the very last before paying for my emails. I have nothing against the idea of paying for an email account. But to pay per email seems wrong to me, after all how much does it cost to send one email? I'm not an expert and I do not have any statistics to support this claim but I feel pretty confident that most bandwidth isn't spent sending emails.
Well as I understand it factors of the IT industry lobbied for this bill and obviously got some politicians to back it, if it will be enough we shall see. Perhaps not since there seems to be so much negative attention, however, politicians don't always do what's popular. Then again; this is election year.
"There is currently no norwegian law prohibiting you from creating a tool to break any copyright protection mechanism. You have the right to access any "secret" key in your hardware or software."
That might be about to change. A new law has been suggested in Norway, making it illegal to copy protected cds. Copying non-protected cds would still be legal. However there has been a lot of heat against this law; politicians have protested against it, consumers have protested against it, and most of the major labels operating in Norway have stated that they do not support such a law.
What I can not fathom is that these people who object to the theory of evolution believes in God. God is all-powerful, all-seeing and all-knowing they say. If God is all-powerful and created the universe in all its glory, why can he have created evolution as well? It seems logical to me. To make his creations able to adapt to the changes of the world, is that not the greatest gift? (Not counting reason and logic, which some people seem to be lacking.) God has crafted the world from nothing; he created the laws of physics and set he universe in motion. For his human followers to claim to know how everything works, seems to me a bit arrogant, which is a sin.
Technically speaking it is possible to achieve this, it is possible to require ID from everyone going to see the movie, and keep that info in the database. The movie itself could have embedded watermarks of somesort, so that it would be possible to correlate the illegal copy to a specific screening, and by using cross linking with other copyright infringement incidents it could be possible to narrow down the list of suspects to just a few. Then bring out the lawyers and just destroy the mofos who film movies in the theaters and distribute them.
Technically you could monitor all citizens at all times, creating databases and profiles to decide who was a potential criminal. I imagine such a project could decrease crime and increase the chance of capturing a criminal. However, there are laws in place to prevent this sort of program. Although the effectiveness of these laws have been greatly debated.
That being said; I am a great supporter of the line of thought that people shouldn't be forced to obey the law; they should choose to obey the law. Of course when a person doesn?t choose to follow the law they should be punished. But databases and monitoring of citizen dehumanize us and breaks the presumption that we are all innocent until proven guilty.
Well if you could transfer all you dvds and audio cds to you computer, all you really need is a wireless audio/video transmitter and a newer model TV and you should be in business. Of course a good soundcard, not to mention speakers and amplifiers, is preferred for that special surround sound.
Then again if you should attempt any such ting; the music and movie industry will send their goons around and pretty soon they will own you.
*sigh* All I want is all the Simpsons episodes in one playlist, playing continuously, without having to change disc all the time. Or perhaps all episodes ever created of Star Trek in one playlist, looping forever and ever and ever ad infinitum.
"When someone makes a point of telling me how honest he is, I make sure to count my fingers after we shake hands. My reaction to people who tell me how smart they are is similar."
So when someone tells you how smart he/she is you check your brain for fractures?
Personally I have a problem with people telling me "the Facts", especially regarding political or economical issues, I tend to get a bit paranoid.

"and who actually watches public access TV?"
Well the villagers in Austria apparently. But seriously; if they make interesting shows people will watch it, I would at least. Actually the name isn't meaningless. It's a Swedish word coming from the older Norse word umbuds man, and means representative.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ombudsman
Well actually as I understand it there are legitimate questions of whether this is in fact stealing according to Swedish law.

Al Gore didn?t create the internet, however without his contribution it?s doubtful the internet would be what it is today.
God filled the world with creatures, textures and buildings of all color and shape. And he saw that is was good.
