It has nothing to do with merchants. It has to do with particular software stacks not being "certified" as "PCI compliant". Visa/MC handled this very badly, and of course, we've got no real guidance or regulation from our federal government, so the transition has been a shitstorm in the US.
The trade-off is that cars kill a lot of people every year. Riding a motorcycle around a 3rd would country indicates that you apparently have little concern about dying in a traffic accident. I, on the other hand, am afraid of my family getting killed or injured on the road every day. I'm looking forward to having to worry less about my family getting killed or injured.
The big box model definitely can work. I work at one. We're profitable and growing. Most people just don't know what they're doing when it comes to retail.
I live in a major metropolitan area on the East coast, and all we have is Best Buy and an Apple store (which isn't really an electronics store). Best Buy here stocks next to nothing, and the last time I tried to buy something in there, I was told to come back the next day, because they didn't have anybody who could sell me what I needed (a freezer). We literally have no electronic stores within hundreds of miles.
Our business has two choices for Internet access right now, and they both suck. There are things that we can't do with our business because our Internet service is not reliable enough. I'm *thrilled* to have more options, and if any companies can do a better job, I'd happily pay triple what we pay now for good quality Internet access.
That's simplistic, ignorant, and wrong. A CEO works for the owners of the company, and the owner's of the company decide what the company's priorities are. Every company's top priority is not the short-term bottom line. That's false.
A. It's not dead. It works just fine. I'm using it right now.
B. I was just pointing out that Dell didn't invent this. Microsoft, at least, did, several years ago. Maybe somebody else did it before Microsoft, I don't know.
Dipshit, the CEO shouldn't be held accountable. They're just employees. The OWNERS OF THE COMPANY should be help liable. Unfortunately, the money-grubbing Republicans have, over decades, completely separated corporate ownership from any kind of personal liability.
If they actually cared about the problem, they would have researched the issue and then applied pressure where it would do the most good. Instead, they applied the pressure where it would get the most eyeballs. In all reality, they are not doing anything about the problem, they are just putting on a show to signal how deeply caring they are about children while not actually doing what it would take to fix the problem. It is like praying for the victims of a disaster and not actually sending aid.
What the fuck are you talking about? The owners of a company are trying to change the company. What else are they supposed to do?
It's not a matter of "rich people don't like kids on their phones". I don't know how you got that from this little article. It sounds to me like a couple of groups are concerned for the health of people addicted to their phones. Take your meds and calm down.
It's really a shame that it wasn't NASA making that launch. The US gave up the idea of space exploration for the sake of science, and sold it to the highest bidder. This country is fucked.
Perceived value. If you charge people more for stuff, they often think the stuff is worth more than it really is. If you gave them away for free, they'd be used as doorstops.

It it's -13F during a blizzard, and I have to walk to the street to get my "delivered" food", I wouldn't be happy at all.

... they could just open good stores. That's something they've never tried before. I would much prefer buying my electronics at a physical store.

Using a Facebook application is insecure by definition of it being a Facebook application. Who cares if it's "secure" or not? That doesn't make sense.

Exactly. Modern America. It's a shitty place to be not-rich.
You apparently cannot understand hyperbole. Look it up. Think about it. You'll say fewer dumb things.

Yes, I'm serious. Did you not see the link?

It's pretty cool.

Oh, and fuck you.

What in the fuck are you even talking about? Did you read the article?

"22 hours of continuous video playback"
"It allows you to download a 2-hour movie in about 10 seconds."
"Movies"? Is this all people use computers for these days?
From now on, we'll only be buying AMD-based machines. Buh-bye, Intel!
That's all great. Nice to see a government subsidy doing something good, for once.

They exist because the government wants to social engineer the tax-ees into doing what the government thinks is best for us.
You're a nutter. Every reputable scientist on the planet disagrees with you.
I'll admit Teslas are pretty fricking cool, but i don't think they should be subsidized by tax breaks.
If gasoline burning cars are going to continue to be subsidized so heavily, why shouldn't electric cars? That doesn't make any sense.
