    If they were going to open up your box, then why would they bother taking out your harddrive to put it into another machine (im assuming you meant this for bypassing the boot password), just moving one jumper or taking out the battery resets bios and guess what.. no password.

    but you are right about the screensaver passwords in 2000/XP they are quite secure. of course they wouldnt bother trying to guess your password, they would just press reset.

    At least under linux there's 'rpm -Va'

    Not all distributions use rpms, i hate it when people generalise like this.
    yes you can install rpm on all systems however since its much easier (in debian) to type apt-get install packagename .. and rpms sometimes have entirely different dependencies to .debs its not a very viable option.

    Redhat/mandrake users who think linux == redhat really piss me off!

    Just create your basic client server in c++ or whatever and you'll notice that it is not recognized by the software anyways

    You do realise that the antiviruses dont actually check ports for incoming traffic to detect a virus right?
    They check files for specific keys which would be why your antivirus didnt pick up on your server/clients.. it didnt have that key in the virus definitions.

    i still find these an annoyance, as it increases my bandwidth uses (e.g codered) and makes apache serve hundreds upon hundreds of error pages (checking my apache logs i have had ip's requesting scripts etc. every few minutes for about a month). which unfortunately slows down my unreal tournament performance.

    so they do annoy me, just not to the extent that they might annoy many IIS/NT admins. :-)

    Are you sure KDE and gnome decided on using /opt ?
    ive never seen them use this location in any distribution except redhat.(i dont know but im assuming mdk is the same).
    when compiling src, they go into /usr/local
    (i think kde defaults to /usr/local/kde.. dont know how long they have been doing that though).

    anyway, i use debian (have been since 1.3) and i have never had /opt anywhere in my filesystem.

    Ive seen win98 run on an ultrasound machine..
    (seemed a little dodgy at the time, as my girlfriend was there having a biopsy.)


    But then again, what other OS's support that kind of hardware? (ive never seen linux drivers for them).

    From Xerox of course, apple got the GUI from them.
    True Apple has turned it in to a piece of art (wheras M$ has turned it into a piece of S$@*).


    Unfortunately M$ has set standards.. file extensions. because their programmers seem to think filename extensions are an effective way of determining file types. (yeah renaming a .exe to .txt works! :-P).

    The worst terrorist attack in recorded history occurred last month, and now we're involved in a WAR and you people have the gall to be discussing building a large scale ecommerce solution w/ mod_perl & apache???? My *god*, people, GET SOME PRIORITIES!

    So in your opinion, nobody is allowed to do anything while "The souls of the victims are watching"?
    How are people supposed to move on from this tradgedy if they cant do anything to take their minds off it?

    Anyway to get ON TOPIC, perl is a great language to write this sort of thing in. I prefer using Embedded Perl myself (i wonder how that would perform as an ecommerce solution.).
    but perl IMHO is the most powerful and versatile CGI language around, java creates too much of a load, and C requires you to recompile after altering any of the code.

    Who says you need to download an entire ISO to install a distro of linux?
    I have never paid for linux, albeit a distro attatched to a magazine which i have never installed. I started off with debian 1.3 just downloaded the rescue & device drivers floppy images, as well as the base system (which was only a few megs then). And i just continued to use dselect to upgrade until apt came along and now its never been easier to keep up to date.

    Did anyone else have memtest86 sit there for (i think i gave up after about 6 hours) passing all the tests it had performed so far but why does it take so long?

    I mean i was still on the first test and only the 11th Pass??

    anyway ive given up on that idea for the moment, until i can easily pinpoint the corrupted addresses on my 32meg dimm.

    Well not quite every linux user, i started with debian and with debian i will stay. (i did try rh, once when version 5.0 was just out, but didnt like it).

    how does this make sharing them legit, a cd is for personal use, if you were to say that anything copied from someones cd and shared amonth other people was legit then there would be no problem with mp3's.

    Well the reason as i see it is...

    Apple wants to regain their hold on anyone using mac hardware, instead of having ppl using ported linux distributions, as *everyone* knows BSD now natively runs linux apps and is far more secure than linux.

    Also they are hoping to gain a larger user base as many people who use *NIX will be wanting to give their new user friendly OS which is actually unix a try..
    (hell i have never liked macs but want to try out their new macos X).

    now as they have ported everything to BSD does this mean BSD will now be able to run their apps?
    probably not, you will need their own gui which will come with a significant price tag, and of course this means you have no hope in running X apps on that.

    of course i could be wrong, maybe their gui is based on X or uses X libs in some way.
    This would please me as their are a lot of mac apps out there which i would love to use on linux especially quick time.

    Here you go dude konqueror its open source, supports https (which mozilla doesnt seem to yet) supports all netscape plugins e.g flash etc. and is pretty damn fast im using it now and unlike any of the gtkmozembed browsers i have used, remembers cookies correctly so i dont have to login to slashdot every time i wanna post something. i do like where mozilla is going but its still too slow for me at the moment.

    e.g i wouldnt usually spend $3000 dollars on any new technology

    My definition of an os is a system which lets you Operate your computer.

    True Applications let idiots operate things.. but it is not what actually operates the hardware of the machine. The kernel is the operating system and yes ever OS today has a kernel.

    The author probably used a html editor to write that, and most likely classed that as part of the operating system.

    The Sad thing is this is what most people beleive, so there is not much point in discussing why he is wrong here as everyone here must know what an operating system is.

    no is that because they had a very advanced numbering system?
    now i am not saying i can explain any of this but there has to be a reason, and i very much think our numbering system could use some drastic alterations!
