I think what a lot of you are missing here is that many end users carry a lot of arrogance around with them. In my experience it hasnt been the ignorant user who screws up their PC or the Network. It is the Self Proclaimed Guru who installes the "free" tools or useful software on their PC for the betterment of their job. Then the system crashes because they did not understand the vulnerablilies in the software, or forgot to read the license agreement with the spyware disclaimer in it. Or For that point they put a file share program on the PC that Clogs the Network and shuts down an entire subnet. Not to mention the people who just HAVE to check their home e-mail importing the latest worm, now we have several infected servers, an overworked router and many users who cannot get their Job done.
How many of you replying to this post would allow an unknown person to sit at their home PC with admin rights? Or just allow me to sit on your network with an Admin box. Yea, I am pretty sure I know what your answer to that question is.
Problem is, in a Microsoft environment there are so many unknowns that any real-time Sys Admin knows that the best solution is to give users what rights they need to work. Dont make them Gods in an environment so they can have Webshots or that rare unecessary upgrade.
I am guessing most of you complaining about these problems have never been put in charge of a real network and therefore do not understand the implications of giving users admin rights. I think you are just complaining because someone is limiting you and you cant stand having someone who has more power than yourself.
I have a network of over 750+ users and their are 9 admins 3 sys admins. We cover an entire State for support and we get along pretty well without any user admins.
How many networks are full of network savvy users. And even if you did have some people who Think they are network Savvy would you want them screwing with the settings? I believe that most people who are not network admins do not understand the implications of making everyone an Admin on their box. Major rule of networking....NEVER give someone more privelages than they need to do their job. That rule goes across the board, microsoft or non-microsoft.
Oh I am not saying that bloatware is the way to go. Just that some items are nice to have integrated. I would rather not have 7 programs open and worry about compatability issues between each. For your sake why not have a PC for each program you use? That way you could run 5 500MHz PCs rather than one nice 2500....
But you are correct, they should make it a little more modular.
Usually when you are corresponding to people it is nice to have their contact information integrated into the program that manages your appointments. A calendar is a simple program that can easily be integrated into any organizational program.
Also FTP and Web have little to do with appointments. Whereas most of the appointments I make a day come from e-mails. Really nice to be able to tie that calendar entry into the thread that preempted the meeting I need to go to.
I think the real question is why wouldnt you want a calendar in your e-mail program? Other than complying with occam's razor?
I want to know that if all goes wrong, I can switch out for new equipment simply. Inevitably I will have to upgrade my hardware and software, I want to know that the next product to come out will be a seamless transition. Much like other postings, I want to know how well can it handle change?
Nebraska Voter here as well!
I am an independent and my voting record shows it. But one thing I have noticed is that Democrats tend to believe that all Republicans are "Racist Biggots" throwing in other words like ignorant, morons, and closeminded.
How are they supposed to change the minds of Republicans or independents for that matter if Democrats are so belligerant.
Both sides and independents alike have instances of ignorance and Racism. I find that liberals tend to be a bit more closeminded that the average non-liberal. For every big name agains Bush there was one against Kerry. But I can see that it does not matter as long as a Democrat is speaking because if you do not think like a Democrat then you are considered a closeminded moron, no matter how many hours/days/years we spend researching our cadidates compaired to just voting for whoever your party puts on the board because they are Democrat. If you are depressed for 4 years over this election then you will get nothing done. Pick yourself up, make a difference rather than moping for 4 years and try to make the difference you think Kerry should have done in your place.
Why is it that most the posts I see on here are assuming that the majority are morons and only the liberals know what is best for the country. I guess you need to get it out of your system, rant away. I think most of you forget about all the other facets of the country's Gov't that shapes our future. It is not one man.
I think as an american people we need to stop whining so much and actually do something about the economy and the events around us. We love to talk but we hate to do anything ourselves. Let someone else do it and bitch about how we could have done it better. Great mentality.
How about we do something different for a change. Support the Gov't, work on reforms as a people.
If you dont like something, DO something to change it, start a petition, talk to your representatives. Just stop whining....
Actually I disagree, I have read the book a couple times, but if you read you find out that the three rules are nearly perfect. The point of each story was to show how the robots used the three rules to accomplish the goals in different ways. One believed it was worshipping God, but got the job done. Another was simply overloaded so his task load was to be simpified. Yet another just couldnt make a sound decision, not due to the 3 laws but in my opinion due to poor programming as the robot did not learn and ended up going crazy due to it. The final story shows that when the 3 laws are used to their fullest the robots end up being the ultimate slaves by ruling over us all so we can be happy. But you know this since you read the book.
I think more areas of study need to take the hint here. Give people incentive and you will get solutions. Why not hold similar competitions for other products such as Fuel efficient cars, Economical Housing, or any other useful tech advance.
If we take this competitive road, will we see a new age of innovation?
It would be interesting to see the stats that back up your rant.
I can only imagine that virus creators are after boxes that if and when they are compromised would go un-noticed. Linux administrators tend to be a little bit more anal about security than the average home user. zombie wise it is much more efficeint to infect several million users than a couple hundred high bandwith users. Money wise you dont go after major banks and wall street, too much attention, you want to grab $10-$1000 from a couple hundred thousand people who cannot coordinate their efforts against you.
I have said it before, but our friendly neighborhood hackers and virus writers will always find a way to poliferate their software no matter our security.
I run Linux myself, but I do not believe my security is largely due to my OS distribution or security measures, but more to the point it is because of a small fruitless target.
There will always be a way. I am a firm believer that our hackers and advertisers will find a way it is just a matter of time.
Also Until people stop clicking on the ads that pop-up on their bulletin boards, websites, and e-mail. Spam and obtrusive ads will be a problem.
It would be a brilliant idea if it werent for the Human condition. It will basically turn into a very large hacknet. Which may be exciting for some, techs, and geeks. But for the layman this could be a very large nightmare.
While it will be a while before I will be able to justify one of these at home. I am happy for any technology that will further lower the price of processors. Maybe a nice AMD64 will be in the future of budget home users.
Malware companies are not the only ones generating revenue here. There are a lot of Techs out there who are raking in the cash removing all this malware. It would be interesting to see some stats on how much money is spent removing all that crap.
Of course there is, Lotus Notes... ;)
before the flames start roaring that is a joke!
dude I can feel the bitterness all the way over here.

It is a good thing diversity is a bad thing in IT...right?

ahhhh, to have a simple life once again...

I agree with you, thanks for the well thought out response.

hmmm, I wonder if this will catch on as quickly as IPv6 has.....

I dont think we will see a real change in the viruses for Linux until their market share increases to appeal to the spammers and virus writers...

But honestly, how hard is it to set up a firewall to to your builds behind. You can build a smoothwall out of an old PC in a few minutes...
