actually it is looking at events created locally by neutrinos from my understanding, it isn't actually recording ANY remote events. Of course by this logic you could consider any telescope just to be recording particles that hit the telescope. But I maintain this is more of a microscope than a telescope.
Yes, I read through the whole article looking for an explanation of why it is referred to as a telescope. Then I was scanning through these comments for someone to explain to me how this is a telescope, figuring somewhere there had to be a couple people duking out the actual meaning of telescope, or at least the difference between a telescope and a detector...why not a microscope...
From Wikipedia
A telescope is an instrument designed for the observation of remote objects by the collection of electromagnetic radiation.
A microscope is an instrument to see objects too small for the naked eye.
An observatory is a location used for observing terrestrial and/or celestial events.
Can anyone explain to this idiot (me) why this is considered a telescope?
Ya I have several friends who do veterinary care...but found that the field is pretty competitive.
However, my brother (a chef) is finding the economy of food is not all that it is cracked up to be, he has been on and off of work for the past 2-3 years. If it isn't that the company closes, it is that they fire him for cheaper labor.
agreed, lately we have shown that the resources are only a small fraction of what generates a good product. The X-prize style events are perfect examples, or the breakthroughs in solar cells over the last 5 years.
But yes, someone with a scientific mind will be more apt to make a discovery or contribution than some adrenaline junkie with a camera...

What US Health Care Needs

Why do you think my Wife went into Pharmacy? She could have spent tens of thousands of dollars getting a PHD in biology (she already had her Masters and was teaching). Then spend the next 30 years competing for jobs for a crappy salary and moving around the country. Or she could spend the same time, a little more money, and have a guaranteed job. She will probably end up teaching or doing wellness care as she cant stand retail. Even cutting out that sector, her job prospects are WAY better in Pharmacy than they ever would have been in academics.
As a side note, addressing the GP/FP doctors in the US have a bit of a control freak nature. Not only are there not enough of them, they seem to have issue with delegation. Recent pharmacy grads are exceptionally good at prescribing and much better at diagnosis than their predecessors. Yet doctors are still slow to utilize them as specialists. This lack of respect for other disciplines in medicine is causing many issues as well. (There are states that do allow pharmacists to prescribe and are getting closer, but we are a long way from reducing the burden).
Anyway, yes I was using PHD as an example, the whole point I was trying to make is the term "real scientist" seems to be misunderstood. The dickheads who are adrenaline junkies need to keep out of the way. They have a right to be there but as with any situation, you need to be sensible. However if an individual is out chasing a storm the people causing the problem probably aren't sensible in the first place.
That being said we have proven over and over again, it isn't always the scientist with the biggest grant, or the most education that provides breakthroughs. How do we sort them out? What makes someone a better scientist than another? Out of my way, I have a GRANT!
I agree. This is the case for anything. But having been around my fair share of PHDs there is the mentality that even if you are applying the scientific method and doing good work. You are not as worthy as they are. Same goes for PHDs though, some of them have spent their lives contributing to the science and you get some people with $$$ on them who think because they do drive the million dollar car that they have some better right to be there.
Ok I have to take issue here. A degree does not make you a scientist. Nor does money, or reputation. Some of the greatest breakthroughs were by very curious individuals. I just hate this University mentality that you are not worth anything unless you paid dues.
As a sysadmin I find your point valid but your reasoning BS. Security admins like myself do not spend our time looking at all the sites that employees go to...good lord do you really think we have that much time in our day? We monitor, log, and it gets put away for HR purposes. Occasionally we will look and see where people are going and what the bandwidth is being allocated to, but I don't know a single admin who does what you are bitching about. Now what IS done, is in high security environments, like financial institutions, will scan through the e-mail logs to see if any sensitive information leaked out.
I love people like yourself who build up these straw-men, but have no CLUE why things are done the way they are, you just like to bitch about someone else being in control. There is a reason we don't let people like you make decisions that matter, because you are incapable of seeing the big picture. You make great Techs, bad admins.
That being said, there are admins out there who are glorified babysitters. No one has the time to watch all web traffic and make a human judgment on it. iPrism has good lists where people actually categorize the sites so I don't have to do it. I am a BIG proponent of educating my HR departments on what is acceptable and what is ethical. Employees should be able to surf and browse as long as it does not endanger the company. If an employee is found to be having trouble keeping up with their workload, we as an IT department, will provide logs of their activities for Evaluation. This is a CYA scenario, otherwise the employee in question just states how they are overworked and HR can do nothing.
There are also lots of bad admins out there who put bad policies in place. They webfilter but never block outgoing ports. Or they disable CD-ROMs but not USB drives.
Your old boss is a prime example of this, but win 3.11 was very early in the game and people had not learned from the mistakes back then. We are getting better now, but wont get really good until the upper management from that era cycles out.
To sum up, monitoring everything you can is essential in many businesses. CYA, Audit trails, and metrics are all good reasons. big brother antics make up for maybe 1% of it. The rest is just being throughough so when someone claims you sold or stole data you can prove otherwise, I personally can clear someone quickly if they get accused of stealing. I can also prove neglect. But it is up to a manager to start the process. Most likely if I am pulling up your activities, you already got caught doing something pretty nasty.
Yes, it was funny, my bosses were sure I couldn't get a lower price, all I did was a quick search on Newegg and Tigerdirect found the exact same cable and brand for less than $5 and was allowed to purchase once I had the bids done. Hell just to buy a $50 Linksys router for a closed testlab I had to bid it out, have personnel from DAS review the purchase because it was a "router". Had to be shipped to them 6 miles away, picked it up. We calculated up that we spent about $100 in man hours just to order the $50 item. I understand how the system works for big purchases, or should, I have plenty of stories about 2 million dollar projects the state would spend $300K bidding out...
Well just being in IT I was often asked to help with IA cases. Also working next door to the internet crimes division I was suckered into the "dude you have to see this" more than once. As an IT admin in general you see a lot of freaky stuff. I mean, it is good that you have found what turns you on, but wow...
You probably do and haven't realized it. Having worked IT in law enforcement, I can attest that you CANNOT judge a person's sex life by their appearance. That sweet girl on the plane or straight laced guy could be into some freaky stuff and you would never know.
LOL, this is a RARE occurance. When I worked for the state there was an agency DAS that would use the collective buying power of the state to supposedly negotiate contracts for lower prices. The problem? They would not renegotiate so when cat-5 cables would drop in price, the vendor would be obligated to sell it for the price when it was negotiated. I was forced to pay $15 for a 10 ft cable in 2006 from CDWG. How do they get away with it? They show a cost savings for every purchase because at the time they negotiated the prices, everything was $20 a cable. So every time my agency would order a cable in 2006 DAS would show a $5 savings. The agency had lost all purpose and had turned into a huge money pit, they were more interested in pulling a profit than serving the interests of the agencies they were to serve. Yes they are not allowed to pull a profit, but nonetheless they did, they were caught and magically no agency was billed for mainframe time for 6 months or so...
I am glad that there are some places where people are looking out for these kinds of things in the gov't though, it gives some bright hope that things can be done properly rather than as lazily as humanly possible.
Ok so now not only do I have to filter through voiceovers and subtitles to find the original version. I now have to cut through all the remixes and crap as well. Queue people taking popular videos and cutting in genitals in 5...4...3...
I am close to that move. I had to go to coax because I got tired of trying to get a good universal position for my antennae. However, my TV is hooked up to my media center pc with 3TB of storage. I have enough movies and entertainment (Thanks Hulu) on there to last a lifetime. Just a couple shows that arent available on hulu, How I met your Mother, Big Bang Theory, and Good Morning America. Don't know why those aren't on the air but it really sucks, GMA I understand and possibly HIMYM but a tech show like BBT? Most of the viewers know where to grab that and CBS sure as hell doesnt make any money from it:). If they would move I could cancel my TV service and gleefuly sit through commercials again.
Expecting people to uproot their lives and move to a different locality that respects them isn't a reasonable fix.
Yes, we should just be forced to switch countries...awesome alternative. Returning to states rights is not going to bring back slavery or the like, the federal gov't still existed before. We have proven that the US is great at forcing values on other countries. I don't think there would be any problem enforcing law within a states rights hierarchy.
What happened here was not the equal rights movement, it was SS, lack of communication, and large parties in control. It grew inch by inch, now we are miles off center and no end in sight. I am for universal health care, but the way we have it set up is going to compound the issue. We are too big, the world has changed, the gov't needs to take this into consideration. We live in a world now where information travels quickly and easily. We can communicate visually and cheaply. Central structures such as the Fed provides are no longer necessary, we can trim down and get the same job done.
Sometimes people dont drink for quantity, they drink for quality.
As a brewer, there are certain flavors you can bring out by freeze distilling. I personally am not a fan of barley wines and higher ABV beers, but there are many people who love the flavor. Once you get into the brew world you start seeing some really obsessive behavior in the types of beer brewed and products used. Personally, I try to lower my ABV and keep the taste, which is really difficult...
However, in this case it is more of a "can it be done" kind of thing. I don't imagine it will be all that tasty, much like the black pepper beers don't make a good beer but make a fantastic marinade...
Amen, loading up a story or a blog, listening to music and all of the sudden some damn advert screaming at me, the worst ones are the ones in a little corner of the screen. If they pop up at least I know where they are...
As for the damn popups on the words...I have invented countless methods of torture for sites that propegate that...
Word of advice to advertizers, if you are advertizing using any of the above methods...you are LOSING BUSINESS! Never have I heard someone go...man I would never have heard of your company if you didnt shout it at me or cover up the story I was reading....
Wow, an actual response to my post:) Caught me offguard there. Experiences vary from college to college. My college for instance tended to lean to the conservative agenda. I have been trying to find a good reference to show my research and a number of other people I have stolen from, however I cant find a good one that would be taken seriously in this forum. It has taken a relatively large amount of effort on my part to attempt to discredit the Marxist agenda in colleges. However, what I found out was that I myself didn't understand Marxism. The ideas that are taught are things like classless societies are the best, Gov't forced re-distribution, even among Conservatives we have a championing of the proletariat. Among other sectors we see a championing of any "oppressed" group. Check out the ACLU's activities over the last 20 years. Many classes in the IVY league colleges champion the Marxist ideas rather overtly.
Now there is nothing wrong with opposing ideas and learning from a variety of sources. But being a humanist is no different than being a Muslim, Christian, or Buddhist. I just think it is rather unfair that Secular Humanists and the like are considered enlightened but the former are considered backwards thinking brainwashed idiots.
I feel the same way when I am driving on the freeway...

Other people define dues, as classroom time, publications, and doing grunt work for other people. It is this definition I was taking issue with.
