A lot of people don't hear it though, it's a bit outside the regular perception frequencies (pardon my lousy English). Point is not whether the Wi-Fi has a noticeable level, point is: IS there a noticeable level AT ALL in normal use? I can imagine if you turn the volume up to 11 and the power to several kilowatts, yes, it will be noticed. But NORMAL use, that's the question.
I understand that WISE is particularly well suited for finding asteroids (its an infra-red telescope so can pick up warm objects and its a survey scope). If this telescope finds an asteroid with our name on it with enough time to do something about it, it will make all the money spent on the space program by all the countries of the world seem like spare change.
(I wonder if this is first post. If so, it'll be my first.).
First rule in First Post: don't talk about First Post. Secondly the fact that a projectile has been diagnosed as hurtling towards Earth might not be so god for humanity, people that just found out that they have only a few days left to live tend to do weird things. Like "ending" neighbourly quarrels, letting dark emotions go loose, you name it. It's not like the Earth could dodge a projectile Matrix-style.
I used to walk around (from task to task, that is) with a cd-rom (drivegenius or other toollike cd-rom) in my hand, some cat5 dangling from a pocket and nearly ALWAYS whistling in the hallways the theme of Goofy (from Disney). People knew I was there without me needing to show up only at trouble and they didn't even need to see me. But I can understand the distiction needed from hoi polloi: isn't there a cool thing to get recognised by? A Bat-belt or something?
So which is it, Brits? "The BBC isn't" or "The BBC aren't"? You're famous for saying "Microsoft are introducing" and the like, but why use the singular in this case? Is it because BBC stands for British Broadcasting Corporation and it'd be utterly stupid to say "The corporation aren't..."? What about other corporations who have their abbreviation with the C included? For example, would you say "NBC are" or "NBC is"? After all, it's talking about the National Broadcasting Corporation and wouldn't you look like a buffoon if you shouted out to your mate: "the corporation are".
http://www.bbc.co.uk/info/purpose/what.shtml "The BBC is the largest broadcasting corporation in the world. " But you're right: this is a US-centric blog hence should not cover non-US-centric news. And you're also right to add as an AC: I'd be ashamed as well if I spouted such nonsense. I guess you're the life of the office Christmas-party.

There's a difference between sex and porno. There has been some debate about the role of women in porno-movies. Some (at least 1) countries have political parties promoting/condoning sex with children http://www.pnvd.nl/EN_index.htmlhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Party_for_Neighbourly_Love,_Freedom,_and_Diversity . Instead of blindly/easily/lazily/cowardly tolerating whatever comes the most effortlessly to your mind, try grow some testicles and add something insightful to the discussion, instead of blurting colourless platitudes.
(give me non-vaporware that will drive a 22" LCD at full resolution)
K.
Will 32x32 (1024) pixels be enough? We can use a TI-83, not even silver, to accomplish this!
Oh, you mean you wanted a non-stupid resolution. As far as I'm concerned "full resolution" means the maximum native resolution a monitor can output.
Erm, yeah, I guess he expected non-stupid reactions, from people who'd automatically assume a 1920 × 1080 resolution.
_snip_ - who ever came up with this hair brained scheme and passed it off as being somehow superior to ordinary mass storage preserving the original filenames could do with a good hard kicking.
It's obfuscation: there still are mp3's on the ipod, but they cannot be recognised because they are identified by alphabet-strings, like AESDF or DAFVG. There is a decode-table on the same ipod that will translate those codes to proper names, but it difficultifies the unwanted (by the owner of the IP, that is) copying of the mp3's.
Can you show me any non-wiki dictionary with that definition? Anywhere? To me it's sort of like folks that regularly use the word 'average' when they mean 'median'. I imagine that when enough people decide they are synonymous, it's will simply become a fact; or at least that's how most wikis seem to work.
Actually, since we're on the topic of old SF, I'm trying to track down two old stories.
1) A spy crash lands on a planetoid maybe a few kilometres round, all the while being pursued by a warship in what passes for orbit. Thanks to lengthy strides in the low gravity, and tracking their radio emissions, he is always one step ahead or behind them.
Does it involve an alien in a perfectly isolating suit, on a frosty planet?
I'll also have to agree with the grandparent... I can flick my wrist and check the time in under a second. It takes a good 10 seconds to fish my phone out of my pocket and unlock it, esp if I'm in a car and the pocket isn't at a great angle for phone removal.
Hence the clock in the dashboard, also looking at the dashboard for the time will not be mistaken for calling on the phone by passing officers.
Yeah, watching them crack a.exe is pretty obvious.
As far as them possibly preferring a cracked version, you are probably correct.
I must admit, I go out, buy a game, then promptly torrent it to avoid SecuROM and such. Only reason I open the package is to get at the maps/manuals. If I ever get called on it by the RIAA, I have receipts and the original boxes to drag into court. It may not mean anything in court, but I sleep well at night.
"they also have a reasonably sophisticated notion when to pirate and when not to pirate"
Sounds like I'd fit right in.
Again, sorry for the name-calling. Made my own assumptions, now didn't I?
I myself have several DVD's that will not play properly in non-Windows environment: menu-controls that don't work, subtitles that are not available, or just not mounting. That is easily solved with a fine torrent and accompanying.srt:) Behaviour that is recognised by my students and appreciated. And my collection keeps expanding as the most interesting movies are over 5 years of age and at a $7 price-level (typically 3 for $20 inc. p&p)
Re name-calling: as English is my first nor second language, such typicalities (though being interesting) mostly miss the target. Don't sweat it.
"Sure they paid, but the EULA probably stated they didn't OWN the software."
Apparently, the other students in the class are ACCUSTOMED to owning what they pay for.
Odd, I know, but that was the attitude (for the record, I agree with them).
"(did they REALLY pay for the software? Just curious, my students somehow just have the software)"
Have you ever ASKED them? You know what they say about assumptions. I find it interesting that an instructor (you implied this) automatically assumes that all of their students are "pirates". It is no-small-fucking-wonder the RIAA gets what they want in this world when assholes like you fall for their propaganda. Find out for yourself by asking them before you make assumptions. I'm not even an instructor and I take the time to ASK students questions before filling in the fucking blanks.
I watched them install and crack it on their on machines during schoolhours, so yes, I guess that's an answer? (unless they PAID yet prefer the cracked version). Anyway they did enough research on free/OSS alternatives, it's just that other instructors prefer to teach the commerial suites (school gets pretty cheap licenses) so students prefer the real software and not an unsupported (schoolwise that is) application.
They're in the development-business themselves, they know what piracy is, they also have a reasonably sophisticated notion when to pirate and when not to pirate, I only keep pressing them to keep the AV-software working and updated. The fact that I see them do RIAA-unapproved things, doesn't mean I disagree;) Credit where credit due.
Sure they paid, but the EULA probably stated they didn't OWN the software. (did they REALLY pay for the software? Just curious, my students somehow just have the software)
And, yeah, people need to learn to read them before hitting the "accept" button. I am fully convinced that if everyone did, about 50% of the EULAs out there would NOT be accepted.
I am fully convinced that if everyone was FORCED to read the EULA, about 50% of the customers would not continue the sale. Yes sir, I'm naming a LOT of customers lazy and/or stupid. (never mind the analphabetic and dyslectics, their percentage is quite low, not their fault anyway)
I'm curious if apple even has the legal right to restrict installation to apple hardware.
If it's presented after purchase, then you are not obliged to agree to it.
Yet if the store you're supposed to return it to says "all sales final" then wouldn't apple be on the hook for handling refunds of the "refused to consent to the EULA" variety?
Well, http://www.apple.com/legal/sla/ serves as far as I can see most EULA's, so a bit presale-investigation solves the 'after purchase'-EULA-presentation-dilemma.
One of the reasons why governments thing having an ID is mandatory.
Yea, the Soviet Union loved them. I bet Hitler did too. Unlike those places though in the US the government does not have the power to require them. Nor should it.
Either you haven't thought this through or you don't care.
I described a situation in which an illegal alien on purpose accessed the US health system. You describe being hit on your bike, and complain I did not take you in consideration. Hmm.
You also asked if people were required to show ID. If you're required to show ID for treatment then you're basically requiring ID be carried at all tymes.
Falcon
I guess not having to prove ones legality loopholes into making it easy to sustain ones own illegality. Two sides of the medal. Could you describe a system that counters illegal use of healthcare yet does not require constantly having id on you? I'm really interested, I can't see a solution for such a system.
Ah, RoadID "was born in the fall of 1999". My accident was in 1996. A lot of good it would do for me.

I described a situation in which an illegal alien on purpose accessed the US health system. You describe being hit on your bike, and complain I did not take you in consideration. Hmm. Anyway I hope competition will be made possible by being allowed to purchase insurance across the state border. No monopolies.
Dude, get a clue !!! The bill has no provision that the recipient of health care be a legal resident. Regardless of protestations to the contrary, unwelcome aliens will take full advantage of the U.S. taxpayers. The bill does nothing to streamline the payment process which now sucks up a huge amount of premiums. The bill does not limit the insurance companies from denying coverage for any damned thing. True, they can't deny selling you a policy, but that policy can have lots of loopholes to deny specific conditions. There is no mention of tort reform. That alone is the main reason that many doctors and hospitals are going out of business in my state. This nightmare does not really improve our health care system. There are so many other provisions that could have been enacted to make the system better. Do you see any limitations on Big Pharma in this bill? Neither do I. I am in favor of an improved health system. This bill is not even close to an improvement.
Then deny the illegal aliens that to which they are not entitled. People dó have to identify at the hospital, don't they? Do not let the legit US population suffer. And all the negative things you mention, the loopholes, Big Pharma: that'll have to be fixed in another, more appropriate way. If this system is better than the old system (and the majority thinks it is), use this system.
I'm not and never have been a US resident, also and like most/.-ers I'm not an expert on insurance systems: what would you suggest should be done to have fixed the old system?
Are you SERIOUSLY trying to equate DRM to slavery? Have you COMPLETELY lost your mind?
No, he compares different visions on business practices, and being it an example, exaggeration is in order. No he did not equate it, he equated the public's possible views on those diverse practices.
All CRTs do this, this is not news.
