My girlfriend bought a Powerbook G4, so I've played around with it a little bit. The root account seems disabled by default. Well...I'm damn sure that a lot of processes run root level (so compromising a process and obtaining a root shell should still be ideally possible if there is a hole right?), but the actual logging into root seems to be disabled by default; which, at least locally, is a good idea for your average computer user.
Also,/etc/sudoers seems to allow a user to "sudo passwd root" upon default install...I'm not sure if this is limited to administrators, but uh, that's not very cool. Easy to fix, but I wonder why they even included that?
Intel and AMD both are x86 architecture (not all the time for AMD64). A Intel CPU is very different from an AMD CPU of course; however, I can't consider something as a switch unless your OS is compiled for and running on a different architecture. Most Linux AMD users compile the kernel for use on a x86 architecture (no, I do not have statistics, but I find it very hard to believe that there are more AMD64 users running Linux than other AMD's, and I even doubt the majority of AMD64 users on Linux run x86_64).
Therefore, in order to correct the Alternate Method of Switching from Intel:
1. Buy AMD64
2. Buy Socket 754 or 939 motherboard
3. Load a Linux kernel that was compiled by a 64-bit compiled gcc for use on a x86_64 architecture.
Any proprietary OS maker would be anti-any-OS-that-isn't-there's. When profit is the motive, it doesn't make sense to want any other OS to do as good as you or even do good at all.
Spoofstick is a Firefox extension that might help in avoiding phising scams. It displays "the most relevant domain information". Looks like its available for IE too.
2.0 is supposed to include support for compiling and running in an amd64 environment. I did check over the new features list on the marketing section on OO, and there is no mention of 64 bit compatibility...
This is the beta (hell...beta candidate) however, maybe when the final release is out?
I rarely do this kind of reply, but the parent does not deserve a redundant at all. I believe it is a neutral and honest opinion of Microsoft in general and a good analysis of Bill Gates' statement.
If the modding was done in retaliation to his/her "...lumping all Microsoft software as insecure..." then we truly do have the inability to realize that exaggerations can even spawn from the most true of ideologies.
What if your keylogger happened to log what an intruder was doing on your system? If you were trying to prove to a court perhaps that this attacker was responsible for deleting all your documents or something...would that still not be allowed in court?
Gentoo does support PowerPC however, and I think that's the one I'm going to install on my girlfriend's powerbook whenever she gets it (Or whenever powerbook G5's come out).
I'm a first year student in IT, and I do have classes in the compsci building. However I haven't seen any person during compsci lectures running Linux on their laptops, ever.
And yes I meant University of Minnesota Twin Cities, which is in Minneapolis, so I'm going to call it University of Minneapolis to avoid that awkward title.
Bahh, I meant University of Minnesota Twin Cities and you know it. I do happen to see a few Mac users, but I have not once seen anyone have Linux or other *nix running in their dorm rooms or on their laptops, even in IT computer classes.
I have not met one person here (University of Minneapolis) who does not own a PC. I also have not met anyone else here who runs an OS other than Windows.
I still use Mozilla, Mozilla 1.7.5 with gtk2+xft x86_64 build. The reason I use Mozilla is because all I have to do is download one program and I get the browser and an email client.
Now the reason why Mozilla Foundation is still making Mozilla is because Mozilla is aimed at vendors who will customize Mozilla to include the necessary or wanted features. We all know Mozilla has an big amount of features, many of which we never use, so the idea is that there would be some sort of vendor or someone making a distro who would customize it properly for its users/customers. Firefox is aimed at the end-user exclusively.
The Linux distributions fell short on some common tasks including installing new software, setting up an internet connection and the availability of help files and instructions.
What the hell is this guy talking about? Let's break this down:
Problem: Installing new software
Solution: Linux has much much more software available for free than the other OS's, and if its too hard to run./configure and make install, then download portage or whatever you please.
Setting up an internet connection:
Yes getting started on the internet with Linux has always been a bit tough sometimes, however many distros will have your internet working upon install.
Availability of help files?
Did this guy even use the OS? It's called "man" buddy, and its definitely more than enough information.
It would be like someone getting promoted and you not in any other job, but yes it would be a little more extreme. It may cause a few more hard feelings, however I don't think many people working there would want to go on a complaining rampage and danger any future million dollar possibilities. I think the chance of getting a million or more bucks would keep people in line.
But yes, the problem of attrition is very real. If I just got out of engineering grad school and made a couple million in my first year or so I would probably stay, but if I was up there in years I'd retire pretty instantly...and if you have a bunch of people retiring who made the million bucks would cause the follow to happen:
A. The loss of gifted indivudals
B. It would take a chunk out of Google's total stock
Regardless, if I was working there I'd be very pleased.
I think its due to the fact of how aggressively marketed Microsoft's products were and are. It has almost nothing to do with the technology, but the business aspect behind it.
I agree with the parent. Single-use devices are starting to really take hold in the electronics department, such as the iPod. The iPod is essentially a single use device (well yah you can hack it and put text files and such on it, but still, the music is the main thing), and that is selling quite well. I think Bill Gates was perhaps alluding to the rumors about Google creating a super low cost computer that simply browses the net when he said that.
I think this is something that can benefit gamers. If you use a NVIDIA 6800 GT, the card's performance is severely bottlenecked by just about any CPU today. Faster processors will definitely aid high end graphics cards, especially setups involving SLI dual cards, which will be bottlenecked by just about any CPU around today. Presently, graphic cards are leaving CPU's in the dust, and CPU's need to catch up.
Also, /etc/sudoers seems to allow a user to "sudo passwd root" upon default install...I'm not sure if this is limited to administrators, but uh, that's not very cool. Easy to fix, but I wonder why they even included that?

Yah, roller mouse, ok, cool...why is there a picture of a spoon next to the article?

This has to bee the first time I've seen a post like that modded Insightful...I laughed my ass off.
Yup, I'm sure he thinks Linux is the real Unix.

Are you sure? Sounds an awful lot like Walmart.
Yes there is. It's called debt.

Genetically, the primate closest to the human being is the chimpanzee, as the genetic difference between man and chimpanzee is only 1.4%.

Hmm.....now I know why my kernel patch submission to him was rejected!

Oh, would you say she's software created by Tachibani or perhaps a Gaia spawned by Earth itself...or maybe something completely different altogether?
