  1. Re:Not Intel bashing at all. on Faulty Microsoft Driver Saps Intel Core Duo power · · Score: 1

All laptops i've used always give me warnings all the time, couldn't this oh so important CEO read the 30 minute warning and do something about it, instead of just keep working till it shuts down due to lack of power? With batteries getting worn out and such i do not see how in any case you can guarantee anything, what if the guy uses a lot of cpu intensive apps and therefore reduces the battery life compared to if he was only writing emails? If it was really that important, then why not ALWAYS calculate the worst case time? This bug is nothing more than a problem with a power saving feature, so it would still be well within a worst case estimate..

I am sorry but i find your logic flawed, and how switching from an Intel cpu that does between 3 and 4½ hours, to an AMD laptop that will do 2 hours will help you, is beyond me.

  2. Re:Not Intel bashing at all. on Faulty Microsoft Driver Saps Intel Core Duo power · · Score: 0

Sure you recommend that, but how are you going to explain, that even WITH this bug, the Core Duo has more power, and longer battery life than ANY of the others you mention? Had AMD owned a proper laptop chip i could understand you, but with their current lineup, pfft.. And besides, you would probably not notice a 10W increase in W on a desktop system, going from 70W to 80W isn't all that big a deal, but on a laptop it can mean a lot.. So you hate Intel all you want, but their new cpu is a damn fine laptop cpu, no matter how you twist it..

So once again we have a chance to bash Intel, perfect!

Did you ever stop to consider that maybe that specific state, which cannot be reached, is only utilized by the Core Duo? Maybe if AMD had a laptop dual core chip we'd see the same behavior.. But hey, if we can make Intel look bad because of a Microsoft bug, then we are two for two!

  6. Re:A couple things. on Competitive Gaming Hits the Mainstream · · Score: 1

"First, it can't be live. There's no way to intelligently comment on a live video game, and essentially commentary is why people are watching. In most sports you can see displays of athletic prowess. Other sports (just using it as a term, don't want to debate what's a sport), like poker, you need interesting commentary. Poker is slow enough and widespread enough that there are a lot of people that are well-versed in it that can keep up with the game compellingly on live TV. Not so with video games. People aren't going to sit there watching someone else playing video games unless they're very dedicated, and downloaded replays are much more interactive."

Just like any other sport of course you can comment, what you comment on is what to do next, say there is a tricky 2vs2 in Counter-Strike, and one team has the bomb planted and the clear advantage, what on earth to do? The expert commentator explains how this situation can be won or lost, just like in poker the commentator talks about the chances of this and that.. Further more there is the aspect of money, very important when playing Counter-Strike, also a great subject for commentators to keep track of.. Furthermore a NFL commentator spends the most time with tactical stuff, or pointing out key plays, stuff like that, this can be done in a game too, because that 2vs2 could probably have ended very differently had something been changed.. Seriously, just because YOU do not understand the game, do not underestimate it.. It has plenty of dimensions.. Btw, the prime method for watching a Counter-Strike game is via HLTV - Halflife TV, there you are the producer and can do picture in picture, follow the player you like, or just roam around the map...

So, live games can be broadcasted for sure, succesfully for anyone who knows the game, like with any other sport really.

The game has as many aspects as NFL, the tactics, the "hits", the individual performances, the trick play..

Just because you do not understand the sport, there is no reason to call it lame, nor look down at it, believe you me, when i watch baseball, being from Europe, I too think "what a weird sport"..

I do not know how it works, but in the CS world people setup FFA servers to play on, i do not own a console, and never will so i do not know about how it is done there, but having 200.000 people hosted by Microsoft or Valve servers seems kinda crazy..

Uhm, all consoles are the same? Arnt Microsoft pushing two versions, which happens to be one of the things Gabe is annoyed with?

HL2 was very well polished, and after release i got HL2:Deathmatch for free, 3 new maps for CS:S, how often do you console gamers get new maps for your games?

I like the game, and i liked valve getting the money because of the many hours of fun HL1 & CS gave me, therefore i thought they deserved my money more than someone who prints the cd's.. Sure it has nothing todo with the game, but this happens to be one of the things i like about steam..

I now enjoy patches without having to pay for fileplanet to download it, I enjoy being able to setup a dedicated server simply by running a simple commandline steam tool on my linux server, I enjoy valve doing hardware surveys to make it easier for everyone developing games, since you will get an idea of what the average gamer has in his machine, I enjoy valve releasing new models, maps and hotfixes on the run wihtout having to wait to gather it all in one patch...

And what i really enjoy? Valve getting my money when i buy their games, and no Vivendi, EA or whoever publish their games..
