This happens on Windows as well but usually not as randomly or unexplainably - that said, maybe if Linux had a user base as large as Windows', there'd be more help available. Probably not though, most of the techies are already on Linux.

Hey, I have nothing wrong with kids tinkering with computers. It's just tinkering with cars, only less exercise and you don't need to bathe afterwards :)

But if you're in the mood to try out the new game you bought, you don't really want to screw about for a couple hours (in that earlier Linux graphics card roundup, it took eight hours until they were happy with the setup!) Leave the tinkering to Gentoo users like myself, and makes games easy with Mandrake.

Of course we can't really do that until binary drivers can be packaged with the OS...

I think it pretty much exemplifies how hard Linux gaming is to set up, when you have an entire Wiki engine set up for one FAQ.

I'd guess it'll be the same as my experiences - a variety of minor problems depending on what hardware you have, in particular ATI users getting shafted.

In fact: "Currently, the game will not run correctly on ATI cards using the fglrx driver. However, the ATI developers are working on new driver releases, and eventually the game will be supported." but DRI drivers might work, and either way the future looks promising.

Also 5.1 surround support isn't currently available. Depressing, but hopefully set to improve :)

Sorry, I oversimplified when I said 'take the browser out of the kernel'... point taken.

Unfortunately, logoff/logon is generally just as inconvenient as shutting down. By your definition though, perhaps only Explorer would have to be shut down and restarted. That wouldn't be much of an issue at all. Rebooting, I guess, is the safest way for Microsoft to be sure everything has been updated after the patch. Or the laziest way :)

That's the point, if you want choice you have to do it yourself!

What are you suggesting? A Gentoo install program that would let you pick your processor type, check off some sample packages ('KDE', 'Apache') and set it all up for you?

I had a similar thought actually, it could just be a graphical app on the livecd that runs a bunch of commandline stuff for you. But if you go that far, you might as well just add portage to Mandrake. Click-And-Run for Linspire/Lindows does that to some extent, and there are surely other projects in the works.

I have to say that Gentoo installation wasn't tricky at all... although my package CD refused to work so I decided to compile KDE on my own - bad idea, it took six hours :( Once booted I have had little issues with it, though.

But I agree with other posters that if you want a painless install, just choose another distro... Gentoo isn't that special once you remove the choice and detail from it.

Hmm, now I come to think about it I think this is in the works. When you install an extension 'Unsigned' appears next to the name in bolded red letters.

At the moment this doesn't mean much but perhaps later they will be signed and unsigned ones with show up warnings. Via something like GPG.

Problem is... how well are these warnings going to work? I expect most users to just click OK and ignore them, so the answer is not a lot. After all, try to install 'unsigned' XP drivers... the hardware manufacturers generally avoid certification fees by instructing their users to ignore the warnings!

You are overlooking something clearly, because update.mozilla.org is in the Firefox whitelist by default... adding www.mozilla.org would not cause any extra problems over what's already there for the default user.

For Windows updates this is acceptable, after all it is the OS. It would be more ideal if they took the browser out of the kernel so IE could be updated (as it so often is) without a reboot. And if you go completely modular like Linux, then obviously reboots are almost removed, but you have the problem of getting lots of different programs to talk to each other.

For instance I'm having a hard time getting my sound card to work since you have to pass a command line argument to every audio app so it works with ALSA.

BTW, am I the only one annoyed by Windows Update's 'Reboot Now/Later' pop-up? Even if you click Later, it comes back up after five minutes or so. It's just obnoxious...

Same goes with Gentoo and Debian package systems, if you add a cronjob to do it.

Firefox will probably block it, but two more button-presses to whitelist www.mozilla.org for patch installations and you'll be able to apply it.

If this sort of thing continues they should definitely add www.mozilla.org to the default whitelist.
