Linux Doom 3 Client Released
CrusadeR writes "id Software has released the Linux client/server binaries for Doom 3. An installation/FAQ page has been setup; there's also a torrent tracker for the various files."

I think it pretty much exemplifies how hard Linux gaming is to set up, when you have an entire Wiki engine set up for one FAQ.
:)
I'd guess it'll be the same as my experiences - a variety of minor problems depending on what hardware you have, in particular ATI users getting shafted.
In fact: "Currently, the game will not run correctly on ATI cards using the fglrx driver. However, the ATI developers are working on new driver releases, and eventually the game will be supported." but DRI drivers might work, and either way the future looks promising.
Also 5.1 surround support isn't currently available. Depressing, but hopefully set to improve
This is probably the first real reason I have to move debian over to my gaming rig, I havnt beat doom3 yet and utk4/nwn just didnt feel me right. mmmmmmm
Seeing as how doom3 requires such a high end machine to run... I wander how it scales in comparison to a windows machine, as in performance, same specs required? hm...
Cudos to id for continually supporting the linux gaming community. This is one game I will definitely buy, as I have passed up many recent games because of their linux unfriendliness.
In linux libertas
This is great and all, but where is the SDK that Id promised would be available "immediately" after 1.1 went final (Which it did, about a week ago)
The SDK should be of a higher priority than a linux client; DooM 3 already runs under Linux under WINE, but mod teams can't do any serious work without the SDK.
irc.enterthegame.com #doom3linux
or on the forums on doom3linux.com!
The download came down soon enough and the install was pretty painless. Wanted to run as root... (but doesn't require it?)
Then it was easy enough to copy the pk4 files over from my windows partition and the game started up first go.
Sound worked, graphics look good and run a lot better than under windows. I think this is a driver issue though as it has never run well for me before.
Pretty impressed and happy so far.... Not that I could really be bothered to go through the game again now though....
All I've gotta say is WOW! I decided to fire up the D3 demo up on my aging 900 MHz Athlon Thunderbird (GeForce FX 5200) Debian box. I haven't used this system for gaming in about 2 years because I got a newer system and converted this old system to a Linux test bed (well, now it's my primary OS). The game actually looks better (although that could be attributable to the FX 5200) on this old system than my 1.6 GHz P4 (GeForce 4 MX...yes I know, a crappy card). It is a bit choppy at times (probably because the CPU is slower than required), but nevertheless, it is very playable.
I was becoming impatient after waiting 2 months for this release, but I have to say it was well worth the wait. Thanks id for doing a smashing job at writing quality apps that show off the improved performance that can be gained on a GNU/Linux system.
The demo is missing in the news. Linux client/server/demo, all three at once. \o/
Where should one buy a copy so that it will be "counted" as a Linux oriented sale?
(I'll go back to hugging my l33t Linux tin edition Q3 now...)
Well, waiting for Linux binaries was what was keeping me from getting it... who can I buy it thru to have it counted as a "linux" sale?
Don't blame me, I voted for Kodos
Anyone else got this error? :

My GeForce 3 Ti200 works fine elsewhere (Quake3, UT / UT2004). Using kernel 2.6.8.1 and latest NVidia drivers (mabye I should reinstall them?) on a Slack 10.
I have a killer system with no use for it now!
I'm getting this error:

I'm running Suse 9.1 for x86_64, 2.6 kernel, I have a Nvidia 5600 Ultra 256mb with the Nvidia 1.0.6111 drivers. Tries back leveling drivers and such, no go. Anyone else seen this?
I really don't care about this Doom 3 news until the Linux client is finally released! We were told it would be out within a week of the game shipping and it's taking forever!
.. I mean...
I shall devour Bill Gate's heart over this, etc!
What's that? This is the Linux client, my bad.. I'm just.. I
sorry...
... or at least hopefully half like 2. what can i say -- wishful thinking, though these Namco things you hook up to your tee vee are nifty. does anyone have any info on when doom 3 will be ported to Mac OS X??? -- hytmal
I can't run UT2003 under slack 9.1. If I'm running a 2.6 kernel, it won't mount and read the CDs no matter what I try. I can installed with a 2.4 kernel, but then I can't update (and consequently join servers). It drives me nuts, especially since if I could just get the damn thing installed once I could copy the whole install dir to a DVD and be done with it (I've been too lazy to put RH 8 or 9 or something on my computer just to install UT2003).
Nor is this for lack of trying. I've been through the faq (thought I had it licked when I compiled joliet into my kernel, no dice). I've googled for what it's worth and tried installing 5 or 6 ways from various combinations of rpms and tar.gz's and with the auto updater (which I've tinkered with too) to no avail. It seems to be a problem with the Manifest.ini not being created right (the file isn't there, and I haven't managed to build it myself).
So no, linux gaming is nowhere's near simple and problem free.
Hi! I make Firefox Plug-ins. Check 'em out @ https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/youtube-mp3-podcaster/
I mean, if I got to stop what I'm running just to run Doom 3, why not just reboot to Windows (yeah, I know, we don't all run Windows. There are still _very_ few people without a Windows partition that game).

I can't find answer anywhere, so I think it may be good question. Anyone was able to test Doom3 linux client on DRI drivers? I mean of course R200.

Yes! Now I can waste three months recompiling my kernel to allow me to have the ability to click on the items in the main menu!
As opposed to spending 3 months masturbating furiously whilst waiting for your next trolling oppurtunity? Sounds like a fair exchange.
Ran just fine with kernel 2.6.8, Athlon XP1800+, 512mb and a GeForce 5200FX. It runs smoother, just like Quake 3 and 2 did - i don't know if it's FPS related, but the game just feels less jerkier and more responsive. It also loads MUCH faster (also experienced this with UT2k4), and this is with the *.pak files symlinked from a Windows partiton.
All in all, iD delivered. My hat is off to you guys, great work! And thank you so much.
