"And what might this meeting in the middle, this muddling of nation states into a blend of capitalist and authoritarian ideologies, look like? The movie's climax gives us more than a clue when Sidney's path is diverted one last time, into the secretive corporate headquarters of TPC -- "The Phone Company," a knockoff of Bell Telephone, which was in 1967 a tremendous and unpopular monopoly. Spirited away to the star chamber at the center of TPC, Sidney is briefed, James Bond-villain style, on the future of the human race by TPC president Arlington Hewes (Pat Harrington), aided by an animated film that sends up the brilliant propaganda cartoons Frank Capra and others made for Bell Labs throughout the 1950s and '60s. Only this ain't Our Mr. Sun. The company's scheme, Hewes explains, is to make communication more convenient by embedding electrical chips called "cerebrum communicators" -- which are rendered in the cartoon as adorable, big-eyed sprites -- straight into its customers' brains, thereby eliminating the need for expensive cable lines and infrastructure. In effect, TPC hopes to turn its customers into nodes of its communications network. "Congress will have to pass a law substituting personal numbers for names," Hewes explains placidly, "as the only legal means of identification." This technological nightmare fuses free-market corporatism gone amuck with the regimentation and loss of individuality that characterized the Soviet empire -- a meeting in the middle."
besides the Stones and a couple artificially propped up bands, not many "new & different" sounds come from old geezers. If I had the energy I had 20 years ago, I might give a career in music a try.
4.0 does not always mean smart, I'd put my street smarts, business intuition and gambling skills into play, who works for who, eh poindexter??? I will take street smarts over book smarts in most real life situations, college is anything but...
Workstations, iMac G-5, two cables...power and cat-5- winbox in the server room running headless, connect via RDC(sweet!) I just received a new desk, with drawers that lock! The chairs are decent, and our office was actually expanded(we consolidated much of the server room;-}) now all we need is some art work to go on our new walls. We have windows(to look out of and see the world!) that open for fresh air... now all we need is some chics to work in the office, and it would be really cool...
I'll let that quack crack my back any time I feel the need. Have you ever gotten your spine out of place, and can't friggen breathe??? Until then, don't knock the quack. BTW alternative medicine has it's place, just not america where you need a wheelbarrow full of money just to see the Doc...
Remember humans are ugly bags of water! and there are billions of them, their pink skins oozing moisture like it was water. Breathing in, breathing out. Bathing.... bodily functions.... messy. Waste of Water.
Can I get an AMEN! here. There has be be better dentistry on the horizon. I thought I heard of a treatment for kids that seals the teeth? I used to fix my retainer all the time, and wondered why they couldn't seal the tooth with something akin to crazy glue??
p.s. I have logged enough time in a dentist chair to know that I want that shot.
Use something like: reply e-mail activation and plain text only for n00bs. Then moderator review to get past n00b. One forum I joined, briefly, I as a n00b couldn't use post in html, upload avatar or use smilies (like I cared about that)
actually you are closer to the truth than most... Ice core samples have shown this. Ever watch a lava lamp??? I've already commented, or I would have modded you up;-}
I can't find the "dutch" news page, but this has been the coldest spring in 100 years in Holland, I found a farmers diary about it too, he is located in the UK...
"I am writing this on one of the coldest and bleakest days that I have seen for quite a while. If this was in the middle of January, we would call it a very bad winter's day. Unfortunately this is in fact St Patrick's Day."
sorry no web address don't want to dash-slot his site;-}
colder in some parts hotter in other.... ??? that's change, that's evolution!
is it true that there are the invisible virtual rootkits? I am just starting to cut my teeth on VMware and VPC, and am very interested in the emulators for windows on the mactel. I also just received a link in the mail today for a free download of MS VM2005, haven't had time to investigate yet... I have also heard rumors that OSX 10.5 will have virtualization standard?! which will be out by next school year.
Presto, you have admin status now. Your machine gets borked due to unsupported software, can the company charge you for your time lost on your job, fixing the computer, which is not your job? you brought up billing for lost time;-} He who opens the can of worms eats too!
It's been done... can't find the other/. thread, but hotglue in the USB drives... no one uses that again... and cd drives can be disabled or removed quickly, got a philips head and two minutes? I work at a school k-12, we have both barracuda's spam and spyware/content appliances. They will cut out the crap... and let the real traffic go where it needs to go. Back in the early 70's there was a record and stereo chain called appletree records and appletree stereo. They had joined stores, pretty cool for that time period. Then something called apple computers ended up in the same strip mall in about 78-79. For a really long time as a youngster I thought they were all related... not so....

It would seem that apple corps really will be laughed out of court. Apple corps probably hasn't sold 2 records in the past decade.... Legally they are probably squatting on the name.... and that is grounds for a suit to be named later. I thought, I heard in the distance, this is the inroad for Sir Paul to seat his ass on the Apple computers B.O.D.? We all know apple corps was a flash in the pan record company that only exists as an "honored guest" in todays music word.
First off, if it impacts his physical health, then make him aware of that. Don't beat a dead horse, though. If he is healthy (like any geek really is, asthma, algeries etc) then let it alone for a while. Your concern for a friend is noble as all hell, but in the end, it's his choice. I have lost friends to all kinds of addictions--alcohol, drugs, gambling, sex/porn. Some made a comeback and came around and didn't let it win. Others are still on the path to destruction and can't stop. It will suck if they die, but who am I to dictate the quality of life to another? In the end people are always evolving, growing, or not... but I have found that friendships have a time and a place, in some cases time runs out... In the end you are a good person for caring.
Also, IMHO, no one should get any points for replying to this topic. I came with nothing, and will be happy to leave with it.
Yes, you have made a very valid point. I am an "American" living in Europe. In the 8 years I have been an ex-pat, this is one point I can not emphasize enough. I am not "fluent" in any other language, but can communicate in my local language and speak some Spanish, Thanks Jose and Ricardo! where ever you are now. If the English only speaking part of the world doesn't realize that it's in their best interest to learn another language, then it will become a lesser competitor. I bet a Chinese business man loves the fact he can speak in his native language infront of 99% of the caucasian world, and they don't know if he was reciting his laundry list, or the password for his pin.
We have on the shelf now a Adic Fastor with an IBM? mechanism, this is the 3rd one we have had in 3 years, all broke before the warranty was up, the only good luck we had with them. We have plenty of offsite plans in place, I had all the system back ups at my place, I live only a 10 min bike ride from work... very handy. My boss has all the old tapes... Just in case.
Hey Grub, thanks for being civil, unlike all the other jack-offs that could only spout their superiour supposed knowledge
~ stuff like "you twat" etc how enlightening and informative, thanks... and fuck off! I'm glaaaad I don't work with sorry asses like you lot...
We used tape... it failed too many times, media errors/device write errors. We don't want to look at tape again, we use disk to disk, for fast restore, and to portable media for offsite storage. We don't reach 12tb. Btw, I used to work in VIDEO, you want to talk about tape.... and headaches. I would think that already existing technology would have left this in the dust.... We back up with out tape, but maybe 1tb/month. Also, I am not "the" back up guy, and he wants site to site replication next year, with 2 Xserves+Xraids. That will be interesting...
Or spend millions on Candice Bergen to hawk your freakin service! Please, I didn't even watch Murkey Brown...
My best friend worked for Ameritech, and yes he is stuck at SBC~SumBitchClub... the money is too good.
