  1. Re:No kidding. on Overclocking Calculators? · · Score: 2, Interesting

Yeah, i'm a highschool student now.. There's an application out now (MirageOS) that can run ASM games and advanced BASIC games. That's the only way I got through Health class, heh. The big games they play now include a mario3 clone, megaman clone, pheonix 3 (space invader like game), pacman, zelda clone, and lots more. It's getting serious. Unfortunately, some of the teachers are catching on. But I'm sneaky :-P

  2. Re:Open Source games on Does Linux Have Game? · · Score: 1

If only this were true.. A quality game (like DOOM 3 and HALO 2) takes about the same amount of effort and people that a quality movie does. Let's look at a little analogy... Let's say I'm a movie producer. I want to make a quality film, and give it away to people for free. How am I going to get actors? Actors don't act on there spare time, acting is their living. As much as they would LOVE to give away the movie away for free, they can't work for nothing. Just as like all the people that work on a game can't work for free (programmers, modelers, sound people, script writers, music, etc). But let's say I get a group of buddies together that want to work on a project in their spare time (when they're not working to make money) to make a game. They can't put all of their money, effort in time into this project. It's like someone making a home-made movie. Sure, they can be great anf fun, but it's just not the same quality.

    Read the fine website: http://elektra.sourceforge.net/
It explains the reasoning behind this registry, and how it won't fall into the same holes that the Windows registry did.

  5. Too much packaging.... on Unifying Linux Package Management · · Score: 2, Insightful

Here's a big problem Every important program is packaged many many times... Let's say I make program FooBar. First, I make a source tarbell of FooBar-1.tar.gz. Next, every distribution on the planet will repackage this ... A Debian DEB, and Ubuntu DEB, a Fedora RPM, a Mandrake RPM, an Arch Linux pacman PKG, every other obscure package format.. Next, FooBar-2.tar.gz comes out. All those distros have to repackage FooBar. The developer should be able to make too packages: a source package, and a binary, and be assured that it will work on most distributions. So much repackaging is being wasted, when a standard could arise and the program would only need to be packaged once.

  6. Re:Ubuntu on Ubuntu For PPC, And As A Live CD · · Score: 5, Interesting

Ubuntu is the only distro I'd reccomend for new users. It uses Apt for package management, packages are very stable and "just work", great hardware detection, easy installation, nice menus, uses hal + dbus for hardware configuration and such... Also the project has proper funding and is going in the right direction. That's why everyone loves Ubuntu. I don't use Ubuntu, because it doesn't fit my needs. I don't need my distro to configure hardware for me and such. I use Arch so I can have everything I want just how I want it: no more no less.

Dude, you have a notebook of Opera bugs to watch out for? I mean, I can understand submitting a bug to a bug tracker, that's reasonable. But you really need to start getting a social life when you have a notebook of Opera bugs.

Okay. I know this has been said like a hundred times but I need to get it out of my system: Why the heck would anyone want to combine the annoyances of AOL with the insecurities of IE? That's like putting mayonaise (AOL) on crap (IE). Or something. Okay, that was a bad analagy but you get the point.

  11. Can be useful... on 10 Points About Transgaming's Cedega/WineX · · Score: 1

Cedega is very nice if used correctly. Some people (like me), when buying Cedega just say "Wow! I'll buy this an I'll be able to play my collection of Windows games! Oh boy!". Sorry, Cedega doesn't work like that. You may be able to play 10% of your library. You need to plan. Like this. "Wow! Warcraft 3! I want it! Aww man, it's Windows only. Hmm, let me see if it works nice on Cedega. Wow it's a five, i'll shell out $15 for cedega and buy WarCraft." You don't want to do this: "Wow! No one lives forever! I can't wait to go home and play it... I'm pretty sure that it will work, I have cedega." Cedega is nice if you purchase games that are supported. Don't count on it to work on games, make sure they are 4/5 or 5/5

It's actually pretty easy to get 3D working if you have an ATI Card. 1) Sell your ATI card on eBay 2) Pick up a nVidia 3) Boom! Your done. Easy! I don't see why so many people are having problems...
