1. If you're choosing an option, you plan to stick with it for a while. Cost of migration away from their system is a very long term cost, and while it should be taken into account, will be minor compared with the cost of maintaining the system durring operation.
2. In your lockin comparison you cite how hard it is to move from Windows to linux, or Windows to Mac (or anything) and then you cite how easy it is to move from Linux to Linux. I assert that there is just as much overhead involved in moving from Linux to Windows as vice versa for all the same reasons (different file systems, different conventions, GUI familiarity).
Anyone who switches to Windows is going to want to use the strongest software options for that platform. This means using Office on Windows. Open Office (or whatever you think is strongest) on Linux, and iWork on Mac (to use that example).
All of these packages are starting to use very similar file formats, but there's still a migration cost involved. Training to use the new software, minor glitches involved in importing files, etc.
I make no arguments as to which is better for any reason or use. But I don't think that a migration cost is going to be too different no matter what direction you're going.
Where are views probably differ is that while RedHat is a company, I don't see the lock-in coming from them so much as the Linux community as a whole since Linux is the OS and Fedora/RedHat whatever is a distribution.
And like any construction project, building and destroying a computer system is a very minor cost compared to the every day maintanence and operation. Use cooling as an example. I think a system that can manage the CPU in a more efficient manner, save CPU cycles, and reduce the heat that is produced is going to save alot more over entire life (365 days a year 24hrs a day) than a $150 copy of Office (and windows is switching to an XML format anyway:P ).
lol... just because they have alot of money dosen't mean that losing millions feels good. your overworked employees are risking their time on the chance that they'll have more of it in the future (work really hard now in hopes that when things settle down they'll be earning more per hour and will be working fewer hours). Venture capitalists are risking their money in hopes that it will multiply. When you risk time, you generally stand to gain only more time (by working somewhere you're not going to suddenly become a millionare). When you risk money, the same is true; you will generaly gain money.
To say that an investor isn't risking anything when they invest millions of dollars in a company that has a high chance of failing is really quite naive.
I think the general conscensus is that a combination of several methods is the best way to observe and interpret the world. Obviously visual isn't the most accurate otherwise eye-witness testimony would mean more and it wouldn't be so easy for hollywood to convince us that keanu revees can fly. Sound isn't nessicarily the best way because it's quite easy to be fooled by such things as a tennis racket being swung through the air (mwhaha). Touch isn't always 100% accurate either due to the way it's wired to the brain (try having a friend cross their index and middle finger and close their eyes. then use a pencil to touch right in the middle of the tips of their crossed fingers. very strange sensation).
The reason we have five senses (and potentially others) is that each of them reduces the uncertainty of the observation.
PS: If you observe certain muscles in the face, they tend to be far more relaxed when intoxicated, resulting in that stupid 'drunk gaze'.
I'm just looking at the number. Compare $10million to anything big done in the US. Ten million is like a drop in the bucket (10 really nice pairs of space tighty-whities anyone?)
hmm. close. more like how if you want to work for someone that wants you to use a particular product, then you need the product in order to do their work.
Just like if you were hired to shingle an extension to my home with black shingles from a particular manufacturer in order to match the rest of the roof. You can't do that job without those shingles. Thus you need them.
Could you use any shingle and do the job just as well? Probably. But it wouldn't match what was already there and would look poor from the street. Thus causing my neighbors to call the home-owner's association and complain that I had roofed my house in green and pink polkadots.
Can you draw analagies between the home-owner's association and the mafia... again... probably. but you get the idea.
and since he has no choice... he needs the OS. maybe it's more correct to say that the company needs it... but if he wants to work there then he needs to know how to use it. So yes... he needs it.
people like to use what they're comfortable with. i started programming with basic, so ASP was my first real 'happy language' for the web. of course when i discovered PHP that all changed but you get the picture. My mom used to do alot of python programming back in her day so I'm sure this would be good news for her.
Late breaking news! Somebody made a submission to Wikipedia containing false information intended only to drive links to their product!
Surely there's a geek out there working on some cool hobby science project, OSS project, gadget, or gizmo... anything better than this?!?
I can see tomorrow's headline.
"Slashdot Member Expresses Doubt over Meaningless Headline"
You pick out the most un-important part of the entire writeup, and choose to bash it and somehow turn it into a social commentary about the lack of imagination in hollywood... knowing full-well that any major motion picture is a collaborative effort between hundreds if not thousands of people... making the fact that the story was bought totally irrelivant.
The article was about new exciting (or scary) forms of advertisement. The reference to speilberg was fluff. Keep Focus.
I believe what you meant to say is that "he who laughs last, thinks the slowest"
close... there weren't any whites in N.O. to begin with. The blacks killed them all.

no no no... everybody knows that it's the World-Wide-Webaverse!
and often things that don't move... --average /.er

Yes, but it still dosen't run *Linux*! (for which I applaud them)
this calls to attention the other thing that guys have a monopoly on... a firm grasp on reality.
*pats her head* of course you can read minds sweetie... here's a prozac-treat.
You know the line about how if you put a bunch of monkeys in a room with a typewriter long enough they'll produce Shakespere? Except the Shakespere is Mad© Magazine... and the monkeys... Yeah... that's Slashdot.

stop telling the mods what to do :D
bazing...
Ooh that's a really simple code. I know on PC it's just "ghb". Not sure about xbox though...

war secrets! lol. it was probably just something very similar in appearance to a barcode that didn't quite qualify as the same thing.

where's the registered trademark symbol? lol
but seriously... we like to visit other websites too... google is great and all but it's all white. i need a bit of variety.
But since your employer is requiring that you use windows and IE... yes... you need it. They're requiring that you need it.
and since he has no choice... he needs the OS. maybe it's more correct to say that the company needs it... but if he wants to work there then he needs to know how to use it. So yes... he needs it.

hmm... so then YOU need to keep windows around for work. silly person. calling him wrong and then proving him right. gosh.
WWJD What Wouldn't Jesus Do??!?
