Shouldn't it be, "PNG is neither Portable nor Graphics."

  8. Can we do the same for slashdot? on Both Students and Teachers Use Technology to Cheat · · Score: 1

For example, I wanted to post a comment, but I didn't feel like reading through everybody else's comment to see if they already said what I wanted to say. What if, instead, as I type my comment in this little box, I could get a message (maybe from an animated paperclip ;)) saying that somebody had already said basically the same thing, and take me right to that message?

Anyway, my comment is that a better/simple piece of software would be one that scans existing papers and does simple pattern matching to look for plagiarism. Of course, this assumes that teachers are actually interested in getting (and grading) original work, which apparently they are not.

Not the movie, the story by Stephen King writing as Bachman. Basically the same story, but better: it's in the city, and the contestant is chased by the police, and I believe there's even a bounty on his head.

  10. Of course it's Communist ... on Cybercommunism and the Gift Culture · · Score: 2

Do you think it's just a coincidence that the Hat is Red?

Seriously though, before KM cooked up Communism, he invented Dialectical Materialism, which analyzes systems in the context of their transitions. Capitalism will bring about its own downfall because it is a stage in the evolution of our social system, just like feudalism, monarchy, and state capitalism (aka Communism).

While it should be obvious that Capitalism will have to evolve into (or be replaced by) something else, the nonobvious parts are how and when. KM had no idea that the computer was coming along. He understood what happens when human labor can be abstracted into a machine, but what happens when the machine is abstracted into software?

    Have a good weekend.
