Obviously they'll require maintenance, but there really is a lot less to worry about on an electric car. From what I've read (mostly about the GM Impact), there are no fluids to check, no belts, etc.
Electric cars are going to require much less maintenance than gasoline/diesel engines require.
I'd love to drive an electric car as my daily commuter to work. I do a lot of driving around town for various things, and an electric car would suit me perfectly... My main reason for wanting one (or two; one for the wife) is these electric cars will be almost maintenance free. The short trips around town that can cause excessive wear on a regular dino-powered vehicle wouldn't even faze an electric car.
Of course, I'd still keep my dino-powered cars for long trips.
I'm already boycotting DVDs because of the DeCSS crap... I'll never buy/rent a DVD. The movie industry will never get money from me via any DVD product to fuel their legal department.
Face it: The only way to make these corporations/organizations come to their senses is to completely boycott their products. Don't go to the movie theaters, don't buy a DVD player/discs, don't buy Sony products. Hit them where it hurts... In their wallets!
Maybe it's time to start an anti-Sony advertising campaign?;-)
I'm going to say that 1280x1024 came about because of the need for a more "square" work area, namely in CAD environments. That's the first thing that popped into my head when I saw this question.
Could it also have been brought about due to memory constraints? 1280x1024 will fit into 1Meg of video memory at 4-bit color depth, maybe 1364x1024 (close to the 4:3 aspect ratio) doesn't fit into one meg of video RAM as well?
Again, I'm guessing here, but isn't 1280x1024 the first "XGA/PGA" resolution? Could this resolution be held to a different standard than the "(S)VGA" resolutions?
All I know is, I like my resolutions high, and 1280x1024 suits me just fine on medium monitors (17", high end 15").
You want a messed up resolution? Dell's 1400x1050 LCD screens (XGA+)... I've got one of those puppies, and MAN, are they nice!:-) X on that laptop is almost heaven at 16-bit color depth! Oh, and it's a 4:3 aspect ratio. Probably for good DVD playback, but since I'm boycotting DVDs, I'll never know.
...is because they end up being noticibly faster than the prebuilt crap you can get from Gateway/Dell/Compaq and other x86 manufacturers.
It's also more expensive for me to build my own system, but since I use quality parts I don't mind paying a little more.
Gateway hasn't made a decent computer since the 486 days. This bug with the Thunderbird probably won't break the company, but it is bad PR at exactly the wrong time... Right when the Thunderbirds become availible.
Write Wine so Outlook cannot be installed... Outlook is such a horrible email client (IMHO), not to mention the security risks it would impose on the systems it was installed.
They're not the greatest "Pentium class" processors AMD has released, but the were definately the fastest 486 processor you could buy.
At any rate, if you want to part with those 5x86-133 procs, I might be willing to buy them, depending on your price. I've got quite a few 486 systems that could benefit from a cheap processor upgrade.
I use Slackware at home and at work, and simply love this distro of Linux. I would love to be able to run Slackware on my Sun hardware at work, or even have a 64-bit version of Slackware for some of the better machines (Sun Ultra series) at work.
Do you have any plans to port Slackware to other platforms?
Slackware's a great distro, and I thank you for all the hard work you and others have done!
NFS is a great install method, and I use it almost every time I set up a new machine. I don't have a CD-ROM for every PC at work/home!
I might be setting up a mirror for Slackware as soon as my business DSL account gets set up and I'm online... I may even allow NFS installs from the site.
How do I port Slackware to Sparc32/64? :-)

I've been using Slackware since 1996. I personally think it is a great OS, and would like to use it on some of my Sun hardware at work. So, my big question is: What would I have to do to make Slackware run on my Suns? How hard is this for someone who isn't a programmer? Is there a FAQ or HOWTO somewhere that could help me out?
If it is just a matter ot sitting down and recompiling EVERYTHING, then putting it all on media and making a way to boot it, then I can probably do it. And who knows... Maybe I'll learn something in the process!:-)
Same here... BOYCOT MOVIES/DVDs!!!

I'm boycotting video rentals (VHS & DVD), as well as pay-per-view, and the movie theatres until all of this crap finally gets straightened out. I've only got basic cable, and I'm thinking of dropping that as well... Nothing on TV of any value these days anyways.
I don't NEED to pay to watch movies. I can LIVE without watching movies. So can the rest of you. Let the entertainment industry know how we feel about this DeCSS situation by NOT giving them money for ANY type of media they have control over.
209.207.224.41, 209.207.224.42, 209.207.224.40 These three IPs are what I got when I resolved "www.slashdot.org"... Keep them safe, so if the bad people come, everyone can still discuss what to do about them!:-)
Subscribe to the "comp.sys.sun.wanted" and "comp.sys.sun.hardware" newsgroups, and then post a message asking for anyone with some 64bit hardware to reply to you if they have something for sale. You'd be surprised how quickly people respond, and how MANY.
It's way better than eBay, and people in these newsgroups are very knowledgeable about the hardware they're selling. I've had nothing but the best of service dealing with these people.
I placed an order for components to build a computer system for someone's family, and everything came in with the exception of the Altec Lansing speakers, which were backordered. This was a complete system, from the mouse to the monitor... I ordered all my parts from The Chip Merchant the Saturday before Christmas, and everything arrived on the Wednesday after.
MTV has proven once again how lame they actually are. Who the hell cares about six idiots who volunteered to be buried for one of the largest parties in the country?
Wow... What a group if idiots. I'm sure they'll carry on our race if the "big one" actually happens! Right... More likely they'll fight each other to the death over the last can of Spagettios.
I'll keep my hand up, thank you very much! The K6 was an excellent processor that had a crappy FPU, that's all. I've been a fan of AMD since the 386 days, and I'll back them until they break Intel's balls!!
I thought the movie had some funny scenes, but overall wasn't all that great. The sound quality was horrible, but the video editing was really good. Sure there were a few screwups in scenery, but what can you expect from a movie with no budget (I hope!)?
Anyways... I've put the movie on one of my machines at work. Don't kill it, please!;-)
I'm on salary, with no possibility of overtime. This may seem like a rip off to some people, but I also have a condition in my contract which states that I have no set amount of hours I have to actually be at work during a week period, AND I do not have set office hours.
Basically, if I don't have anything scheduled, and if nothing breaks, I don't have any reason to go in to work that day. I can go in a 3pm and leave at 5pm, and that's a full day's work for me!:-)

Buy a used Sun UltraSparc 1/170 or better system... They're 64-bit, and can be had for fairly cheap these days.

No kidding... Disposable this, disposable that. Now they have disposable cellular phones!
It makes me sick to be called an American! I dont't throw anything away unless it is completely and utterly useless.
My first computer is still running beside me... A 386. I've never thrown away a good computer part.
