    No kidding... I too do everything "wrong" when it comes to using my computers, and I don't have any complications in my hands or wrists. I have been known to sit in my office for 36 hours straight when things go horribly wrong at work, doing nothing but typing while rebuild whatever system went belly up.

    Maybe some people just aren't built for computer work? I dunno...

    Why? Because LCD screens are simply better, that's why. Sharp images, high resolutions, and better color tones (IMHO) than CRTs. Plus, for me, LCD screens create less of an eye strain when stared at for over 12 hours straight, which I pretty much every day.

    Yes, they are expensive compared to similar sized CRTs, but work pays for my laptop, so I'll get the best I can.

    It's not exactly a light-weight laptop, but it's not bad. It's pretty large, though, and the screen slightly overlaps the base when closed.

    With 128Megs RAM, a Celeron 466, and all the other goodies, I'm not complaining about the weight.

    Yeah, those FE575 cards are pretty nice... I hope they're supported soon. I'm not a programmer, but if I was, I'd be writing code for those lil' suckers right now! :-)

    I don't know how long your batteries last, but my new Dell will run for at least three hours on the one battery I have. I don't do a lot of travelling, so for me that's about all I would ever need at one time.

    Yes, I know some of those Mac Powerbooks are really good with battery power consumption. I almost bought one...

    Yes, I agree... If you have desktops available, there isn't much of a need for a laptop with a huge screen. Of course, if you're like me, your laptop IS your desktop (my only PC, actually, for work and home), so you need all the help you can get!

    Mmmm... Dell Inspiron 7500...

    Yes... You want an Inspiron with the 1400x1050 resolution 15.1" LCD screen. I just got one, and MAN, is this thing sweet. VERY crisp, very bright, and the ATI Mobility video setup is pretty darn nice.

    I've worked on a couple of the new IBM laptops with the 1280x1024 resolution... Not bad either. I'd take the Dell over the IBM any day, though.

    Now, if only Linux would support my video (ATI Mobility) and my PCMCIA network card (3Com FE575), I could at least dual boot between Win98SE and Linux...

    ...or anyone else I know. I'm sure there are a few people out there who are married to someone who used to be an online flirt, so it can happen. Just don't count on it.

    I met my wife when I moved and switched grocery stores. She worked in the deli of my closest grocery store... What can I say, she certianly knew how to handle my meat! ;-P I must have bought and ate more lunchmeat during those first two months of flirting than the first 18 years of my life total.

    Don't be afraid of leaving the comforting rays of the CRT and venturing out into the world. You never know who you'll run into out there...

    Wow, that was intelligent.

    Slackware is the best distro for me because it is compact and doesn't have as much (or any?) fluff like some of the other distros have.

    Care to list at least one rational reason you DON'T like Slackware?

    I think that's the slowest processor that will run NT, and I just happen to have one sitting at work. I'll just pop that into the Compaq 486 w/24Megs of RAM, and we'll see how long it takes to INSTALL, let alone go through reboots... :-)

    Thank God it's Friday, and I can actually slack off and do this all day!

    NT4 wouldn't load on my 386DX-40 system with 387DX-40 mathco, 32Megs of RAM, and 256K of cache... Said I needed at least a 486 processor.

    So much for the 80x86 compatibility!

    Check out: http://www.tomshardware.com/cpu/99q4/991025/index. html Intel is catching up, but still is way behind in floating-point. That's gotta hurt! The Coppermine chips do beat the Athlons of the same clock speed in some tests, mostly games, but Athlon is still ahead of Intel for now.

    I simply love Slackware! I started out on Slackware back in v3 days. RedHat and Debian are nice, but too complicated to admin without the GUI... And I don't like to admin through a GUI. Slackware is SMALL, very simple, and easy to manipulate to get what you want out of a Slack based system.

    Definately... @Home services my area for cable modems, and they really don't have a clue what's going on here. Wouldn't even talk to me unless I promised that I used a Windows95/98 machine! They've also got the 128K/1.5M deal going here, with scanning for HTTP, FTP, telnet, etc servers. Serving from your home computer on an @Home network is apparently not allowed.

    GTE is here with DSL, and they're great. Decent tech support (recently), good connections, very few interruptions, and bandwidth is pretty much always at peak performance, up or down the wire.

    I'm getting 384K/384K DSL service installed this coming Monday! I CAN'T WAIT!!!! :-)

    Eh... Sometimes the MacOS is too easy, though. I personally don't care for how things are dragged and dropped (file copy), the one button mouse sucks (yes, if I spent $$ I could have more than one button, but that's how it came from the factory!), and I don't have enough control over the operating system to tweak it to my personal tastes. Sadly enough, Windows98 allows me to do more with my OS than MacOS.

    For fun I brought back from the dead one of the Mac II's we had in storage at work. Man, it was fun putting around on that old computer! Then I quickly grew bored with the fact I couldn't install any decent version of Netscape or other applications, and I shut it off.

    Oh, well... I'll be running Linux/BSD/Solaris on my new laptop (please get here soon!), so this is all a moot point.

    I just read the article, and then stopped by here... Wow. That's all I've got to say... Dvorak has really lost his place in this information age, hasn't he?

    Personally, I think he sounds like a frustrated user who simply cannot learn *nix. I don't doubt that he has tried, but his attitude would suggest that if he can't learn it, it must be worthless and everyone who backs it is insane.

    Guess the old dog really can't learn new tricks!

    What really pissed me off is the crack he made at Linux and AMD... What a moron. What's the fastest x86 processor you can buy today? Huh? Did I hear the AMD Athlon? Gee, Mr. D... Musta slipped on current events in the processor world! Oh, wait, I forgot. If he can't figure it out, then it must be worthless and we're all insane for backing AMD. Silly me...
