Removing the battery is still the best way to reboot your phone in case it gets stuck. Just tell me what to do with the iPhone. Or will it, in contrast to any electronic device in the world, never get stuck?
I don't know much of the details, because I didn't use it much up till now. The sum of taxes, health insurance, and pension funds adds up to an impressive 40% of your salary. So of the 2500 euro bruto salary you get about 1500 nett. In germany there is even a special (I'd call it dubious) tax for people that are religious, that money is collected by the state, but given directly to the main religious organisation of your choice (As a side note: Scientology is NOT a religion under german law).
Back to your question: Things are getting worse more likely than they are getting better, also here, but I will tell you how it works here in germany now: if you visit your practioner you have to pay ten euros, this is then valid for the current quarter. He can send you to a specialist for some case, then you don't pay. If you go directly to the specialist you also pay ten euros. This is just to prevent people from going to the doctor for useless things. Still, for those just managing their monthly costs, ten euros is way too much I think (apparently, this is the copay system you mentioned). Going to the first aid is excluded from this, and this might have shifted a bit more pressure to the first aid posts.
Most medicines get reimbursed, others partly. You never pay more than about 10 euros I guess. I am not sure if there are copays for chronic medicines. It shouldn't, as this will kill medicine compliance, and medicine costs are easily way cheaper than chirugical treatment. I can go to the dentist without an additional programme (this might change in the future), checkups and standard treatment are fully reimbursed. They will offer you the high-quality fillings, crowns, and implants, which will cost you an extra (in those cases, insurance pays the part that would be imbursed if you would have chosen the standard package).
In Holland there has been a reform recently, so that you can choose between extras (as a 60+ person you don't need pregnancy checkups in your program, etc.) All in all it got a bit more expensive, but the basics are the same for everyone. This has huge implications, if I need to have an MRI, hearth surgery, a pacemaker, a fix for my third broken leg or whatever, this does not add to my healthcare costs. I guess that there lies the big difference between the us and european system.
Ambulances are a bit of a problem, they work independently of hospitals and health insurance, and have to get their money back from the health insurance. Apparently, they only pay if the ride was an emergency, as in other cases they would act as a very expensive taxi. Note that calling an ambulance and having them check you is always free, just bringing you to the hospital will cost above hundred euros. A very awkward situation. The very expensive stay in the hospital bed is covered, even though the hospital will try to kick you out as soon as possible. Also, if you want to have a room of your own, you should have chosen some additional package.
All in all, it is probably still a lot better, and you will hardly end up with paying large parts of the bill for decent healthcare. But, tendencies are downwards, and they have seemed to 'learned' a lot from the american system, unfortunately. But at least still a jobless person, a student, a low-paid worker here has the right to the same high quality basic treatment as someone with the most expensive package. There is no way to work or to go to college, or to get a state allowance without having a health insurance, you have to prove you have one. I sure hope they keep it like this.
yes, that bothered me in the blog post: "Moores film portrays the industry as money and marketing driven, and fails to show healthcares interest in patient well-being and care.". The ass licking of this google blog is clear.
They are allowed to do this of course, but does not match with their slogan of 'do no evil' and over time, these inconsistencies will lose them good faith of their resources, which are we, the users (we are not the clients, but google needs the internet users to look at the ads bought by google's clients, the industry).
I am amazed by the american healthcare system and that many people do not even have healthcare. This might partly be a cost issue, but note that for me, a european, the healthcare costs are 10% of my net income as well! (say for someone earning 2500 euro they end up paying 250 euro) Still for no money I would choose to stop it. I always thought it might also be involved with the US mentality of everyone being able to be a winner. A winner doesn't need a social system, and a winner won't get sick either, a winner doesn't have to worry about his credit card debt. This Will Smith movie 'in pursuit of happiness' was just what US people want to see. See, if you work hard enough, sell your soul to your firm, you can be a winner! Then why are there so many people with huge debts, who can't pay for the dentist, etc etc?
I would like the next michael moore movie to show the US-ians that, guess what, most of us aren't winners at all and never will be. This is true in every country in the world, but in a lot of places people just are realistic about it. Yes, there are places in the world where everyone fights for his own life and some of them end up as winners, whereas most others are on the loser side. They are called third world countries. The only difference might be that the inhabitants there actually would like to see their situation changed for the better.
For those doing research, it will mean that they can either increase the system size by ten, just to annoy other research groups that don't have this access, or that they will have to work much more hours because the calculations will be finished so much faster that they don't have time to write on the articles while waiting for the computer to finish.
In practice, it means that you can be less careful when preparing your startfile. Imagine screwing up one input parameter or line of code 30 years ago, that could mean one year of work gone. Now you just restart it and don't mind about the calculations that got screwed up (when you are not paying for it per CPU minute of course).
I was also wondering since when solving your self-created problems had become science... Oh, wait, maybe they have a point;) In any case, I would call it engineering. Or just support. It's not easy work, I wouldn't say that, but science it is not. I think the difference lies in the point that science pursues the mostly detailed understanding of something with not so much a time pressure (just think about it: can you plan scientific progress in advance? On week 4 we will discover this-and-this?), whereas the work at MS security has to be to try to find a least-effort solution, in the shortest time possible.
I for one, clearly side with the dolphins. And with the Lizards that got their robotic sex lizard from us humans some time ago. Smartass reptiles, those.
Ah, indeed, I forgot but indeed I must have gotten this idea subconsiously from HGTTG. I also still think of HGTTG everytime I am hungry and there is dubious old stuff in the fridge. Part of my mind tells me not to eat it, the rest tells me it might kill any potential alien parasite I might have. Thanks for all the fish, Douglas Adams!
It's like music bands singing songs about how bad the record companies are. You remember, like the ones for sale at your record store for $20, under the Colombia label. Better get used to it, mate.
Ok, I just read the piece on new mail laws in germany in the making: it seems we are all in the same boat people, could luck and let's hope for the better! You could try voting differently next time, but it's hard to find a politician that is not paranoid nowadays.
I was probably unclear. My point was not related to the preprint server, but with the question: How are you going to keep up with your literature of you don't have access to a broad range of journals and have to pay 20 euro per individual article ir you really want to have it. From the same money you also have to go to conferences, or get students. This is based on personal experience: I went from a place with access to almost every journal in the field to a place where they don't have even the basic APS journals. You can still get the articles one way or another, but it seriously slows you down and gives you a disadvantage compared to someone of the same skill level working at a high league university with a huge (electronic) library.
Also, some company-owned journals ask up to several hunderd euro per publication, even more if you add color. This will make it impossible to publish there, but sometimes these are the main journals of your field. Remember, you don't get a Nature out of nothing, you have to build up a reputation of good work in the field first.
Point is, the current high costs of access to scientific information give an unfair disadvantage for those working at the less rich institutions or countries. This is harsh reality but not in the spirit of sciencce, and also not good for the advancement of science.
You need to read up on the german wikipedia article on the GEZ. These people are not a government institution, but they try to act like them, a bit like the RIAA. You are not required to let them into your house or even pay their bills. Also the story of the vans seems a bit of an urban legend, or give me some convincing sources because I would like to read about it.
That unfortunately changes nothing to the fact that also in Germany the power is with the wrong people and insitutions, and especially the linuxworld "friend", lawyer, and politician, Schäuble is not doing anything good to improve the overall situation:( The fact that this guy is paranoia might have something to do with him being shot at several years ago (check the wikipedia link for that one).
you forgot to bold 'unreported contacts with foreign nationals'. Often scientists have a lot of foreign contacts, friends from previous work outside of the country, colleagues at other universities etc. Also you forgot 'attempting to gain new accesses without the need to know'. I like that one the most. If there should be a "need to know", then why not shut off all universities in the US and turn them into churches. The bible makes sure that there is no "need to know".
Oh, and they forgot mentioning that people that don't watch enough cable television or do not remember the last time the underpants of paris hilton where in the news are most probably suspicious.
From the point of view of someone outside the US I am a bit worried that the plans of the US government to turn the US into a second world country might shrink the amount of rich clientele in the US that until now formed a nice export market for the superior technological products that are developed and produced in the rest of the world.
I personally would be glad if scientific publishing would open up. Of course, someone has to do the editorial work, but currently many journals actually dare to ask money for publishing with them, ask thousands of dollars for including color pictures, and to subscribe to them is not cheap as well. This unfortunately gives the smaller universities a huge disadvantage, even when the people working there might be very good. Also, I suggest that peer review gets some working through, by either always opening up the names of the reviewers, or anonymizing the article. As it is now, many articles get good or bad reviews based mainly on personal views, or on the fact that the reviewer wants to publish the same subject and has an interest in delaying it. With these things fixed, science would get a step in the right direction becoming the honest thing it should be.
It is safe to say things like this by now, so here it goes: I am not on Google's side for this one.
But why are these lines between file explorer and internet explorer here in the first place? Just because we couldn't do it this way before. Computing is changing and if Microsofts wants to adapt their system to that than why shouldn't they be allowed to do that? Just because someone else also has a product like that? Is a supermarket obliged to sell products from different brands than their own? I don't think this should be a legal matter in the first place, let the marketplace decide. I for one would use the aternative product if but only if it would work better. If the standard MS product works good enough I'd use it. Up to now this never really happened (windows media player? IE? windows/msn search?) In the end, the battle should be on the quality level, not on even more legal restrictions.
As far as immigration and customs and border protection is concerned, also note how the US makes it a complete pain in the ass for europeans (or anyone else) to just visit the country. This goes as far as scientific meetings starting to be organized in Canada or anywhere else above the US (just last week read about this on slashdot). Keep up the good work DHS! It is not like the US needs to promote its science and international trade, with the falling value of the dollar, its decrease as the standard international currency and the increasing scientific prograss in china and india. Please go on like this so we all profit from it in the rest of the world!
Put this on billboards all over the US, and the car will be sold out in no-time. Or make a Team-America based commercial, saying that in Europe, pussies drive priuses, whereas assholes drive hummers. But then you need dicks in Smarts to show these pussies and assholes what's it all about, before we get covered in shit!
If the Chinese people truly want to live under technocratic tyrants, then so be it.
This is a delicate issue. Say you were born 20 years ago in China. Only if you had very rich parents or were smart enough to get some grants you would be able to leave the place and see something else. Still, it will always be the country you grew up in, your friends live there, your family of course. My objection to the GP's statement is that he connects the country's politics to the people who live in it. This doesn't make sense at all. Also, if someone from China will defend their country in a discussion, don't think they are some communist fanatic. It is their country and they'd like to see it in a better shape of course. This will not happen from one day on the other and will require outside help, as MightyYar suggests.
The biggest problem is how do you help people instead of getting them into more problems. I do not know the answer to that, and see the people in western countries losing their freedoms as well, a pro/degress which is very hard to stop by me as an inhabitant as well. Maybe the economic growth is good for all people of china in the end. More people being able to move up in life might stimulate a new kind of government in a few decades, who knows, I certainly wouldn't be able to make any prediction. Letting them all hunger or just bomb the place as in Iraq might change the government, but will never ever help the PEOPLE in the country, again, please keep that separated.
This is great if you have a choice. I for one, would be the first person to get a one year mobile phone contract here in germany. However, all the mobile phone providers here only provide me with a 2 year contract minimum. They don't even have to have made illegal price accords with each other, they just look at the others and make sure their conditions are just slightly different to all the other offers, they want to make money in the end.
That said, it worked for ISPs, I recently got a DSL line that can be cancelled every month, even within the first year. It is more expensive per month than a 2 year contract, but apparently enough people like the idea to get something like this.
So, your idea can be nice, but you are very dependent on the choices of most of the ISPs. If you live in an area where you have the choice betweeen a tiered-internet ISP or no internet~at all, what would you choose?
Actually, I don't really think that it would matter too much if it would be about Paris or Linus, as long as they are well known people and spotted copmpletely drunk without underwear in a bar. Just explain me why people are interested in Paris? She is not amazingly pretty. She is not amazing in any way. You just eat what you get fed.
The alternative answer is that, as you could discover in the museum of creationism, scientists are the bad guys. They promote bad things like 'Reason' and 'Common sense' over 'Dogmas' and 'keeping the truth away from the people'. The Metallica song 'sad but true' comes to mind here.
Doesn't this tell us that random betting works better than thought-true betting? Reminds me of the chimpansee with pencil and a newspaper way to invest in the stock market working better than professional investors.
Ah, your comment gave me the solution! Indeed, the Tuatura is, by itself, hardly able to use the tools needed to buy themselves a robot Tuatura for their casual sex pleasure. So, what do they do? They leave their Tuatura planet and start a milion year journey through space, until they found a planet with creatures that have opposable thumbs. These creatures were dumb as shit, but that was not a problem for the Tuatura, as they can influence any creature with their mind waves. Now, this doesn't go particularly fast, also because Tuaturas tend to stop doing anything at night. But they don't mind, they have time enough anyway.
What is happening now, and all our technological advancement in general, is just nearing its end in the creation of the final goal, the robot Tuatura sex slave. Damnit man, we're voluntarily building it for them! And you call us more intelligent than them! Did anyone ever gave YOU a robot sex slave for free?
I have additional evidence for the Tuaturas being aliens, so it must be true: Remember that Poster in the creationism museum telling us that after the fall of Eden it was harsh work for all of us? Well, think about what Tuaturas do all day! They just sit around on a warm rock in the sun waiting till some small insect comes by that they eat. Is that harsh labor? Also, isn't this an extraorddrinary intelligent way to spend your day, instead of working your ass of for a meager salary? These are not from here dude.
Apart from the cheap Zonk bashing, good point. The current tags for this article are 'internet' and 'technology', which I would say covers about 25-50% of all slashdot articles. Also, using such tags makes them overlap with the already existing category system, so one of them is redundant.
The way the tags are now they are no good in retrieving the article, as they are not specific enough. 'photo, tagging, metadata' would be a better way then.
The way the tags were before they were also no good in retrieving the article, but at least they would resemble a sort of mini summary and poll. For example, if I would see the tags: 'evil, notevil' on an article I would immediately see that it was a point of dicussion, and therefore likely an interesting read.
I say, please slashdot, make up your mind and think of a better thing you want us to do with your tags than the current useless goal. Also, some trust in your userbase would be nice, you trust us when it comes to submitting the content, and commenting on the content, why not when tagging the content?
I agree. Imagine that realdolls are actually a scientific project from aliens, equipped with cameras and wireless transmitters, for the sake of studying human replication behaviour. Now imagine the kind of image these aliens would get from human replication behaviour, this would be rather skewed, wouldn't it.
Also imagine how the slashdotters will behave towards their realdolls after having read this. Or better, try your best not to imagine any of this.

This has huge implications, if I need to have an MRI, hearth surgery, a pacemaker, a fix for my third broken leg or whatever, this does not add to my healthcare costs. I guess that there lies the big difference between the us and european system.

Also imagine how the slashdotters will behave towards their realdolls after having read this. Or better, try your best not to imagine any of this.
