Right, just like Magellan crossed the world for "mankinds glory". Or, maybe that's just fanboy nonsense.
"HERE MEN FROM THE PLANET EARTH FIRST SET FOOT UPON THE MOON JULY 1969, A.D. WE CAME IN PEACE FOR ALL MANKIND "
Would you care to show me where the words NASA or America show up on that? Yes, there was lots of cheering, hurray for our side type of shit, but the plaque on the moon will outlast those people.
After conquering their country [wikipedia.org], directly killing at least 200,000 people, and worse: [wikipedia.org]
Yes, America did take the country from Spain. Yes, there were atrocities. I never claimed America was spotless. Why do so many people from the Philippines love America even though those atrocities were committed? I can tell you why: Spain and then Japan were MUCH MUCH MUCH worse and America gave them, the Filipinos, their independence back.
In the 8th grade, I had a history teacher from the Philippines who had lived through WWII. With tears in his eyes, he told us of...
Okay, seriously. What. The. Fuck. I tried looking for details on Wikipedia since I do not recall names but I can find NOTHING. There is some serious revisionism going on here since my information comes from eye witness accounts.
Anyways, long story short, some American admiral sailed out of Subic bay with the promise that he would return. Defeating the Japanese at that time and place was not possible with the forces currently available. That admiral did keep his promise and he came back and freed the Filipino people from the Japanese. That is why the Filipino people in general love Americans. The Americans kept their promises and the Filipino people are free today because of that.
That's just the sort of fanboy nonsense the parent was talking about. From slavery to genocide of native tribes to torturing Filipinos to South American death squads to overthrowing democracies to sponsoring terrorists like MEK to launching two bogus wars to bringing back the "water cure", the bar is pretty fucking low, my friend.
Okay, the bar is low. Show me a country that set it higher. Fucking hater.
I am not opposed to the notion that if they are profiting from people using the internet, then they can share in the cost of people using the internet.
I suspect you are confused. Let's approach this from an abstract point of view:
The players are: Google, you, your ISP, Google's ISP, and the advertisers. What is in play: Cold hard cash
Where should the money go? Google pays their ISP and you pay your ISP, so we can remove the ISPs from the equation. That means any money not allocated to the ISPs should go to you, Google, or the advertisers.
The advertisers want a service: To show ads to you; therefore, they are paying for that service.
You want a service: Search, email, whatever; therefore, you should be paying Google for that service.
Google wants money: You are not paying any money to Google for the use of their services, so they keep all of the money that the advertisers pay for the service of showing ads to you.
I am not sure where else you think money should be flowing, and if it should be flowing elsewhere, where to.
Someone asked if it would be useful in the snow. I said no. I said no from experience. I have a Mercedes Benz E55 AMG and it is utterly useless in the snow. I also have a 92 Eagle Talon TSI (which means AWD). It is very useful in the snow. It is also more of a performance car than my E55 (more horsepower and equivalent torque, 4 cylinder vs 8 cylinder).
Being a performance car is no excuse for being utterly useless in low-traction conditions. I am honestly surprised that AWD cars are not standard except in low-cost models... which should be exclusively front wheel drive. Rear wheel drive is just completely pointless. I do love my E55 otherwise though. Quite a sweet car.;)
And there is that huge so called embassy for 5500 people, full of mercenaries. That pulling out is in name only.
You have no idea what you are talking about. There are some people there for security and I guess you could call those security folks mercenaries... but I am unsure why you would want to label them that way. The majority of people there do not carry arms nor do they have a combat mission.
To be honest, a large chunk of the people there are translators. I know because I have been talking with them as they are traveling through my location.
...or should independent shops have a way to do more than just change oil?
You do realize that independent shops currently can not even change the oil... on any Mercedes cars at all. They can, in theory, but they have to buy an expensive computer system to do so... and, it is all in German. It is called the STAR System.
Fuck that, I've heard of this new show called "Outside", and you don't even need a TV to watch it. It's in super HD and it even has some sort of temperature generators, so hot stuff feels hot and cold stuff feels cold. Take that Hollywood 3-D!
Yeah, except Outside has rules that are decidedly not user friendly. Most of them, I can tolerate, such as no fragging your opponent in a duel... others, not so much. I do not want to be a heterosexual white christian male who is strictly obedient to the social hierarchy.
The other option is called Books. Absolutely fantastic stuff there but it does have a few drawbacks. First is bandwidth. I get about 2400 baud but most get less than 1200 baud. It is also requires this facility called Imagination. I have it in abundance but many do not.
That kind of brings us back to Displayed Content. High bandwidth, does not require much imagination, safe for everyone regardless of personal inclinations, etc etc.
I can not wait to see what happens if this patent ever gets implemented. I am going to be laughing my non-TV-watching ass off.;)
No LTE - that's a deal breaker for a lot of people.
Hm. Are you trying to say that a lot of people need speeds faster than 6 megabit on their phone? A lot of people do not even get that out of their local ISP so even if you consider tethering as a person's main internet access, I fail to see how lack of LTE is a deal breaker for a lot of people.
I want gigabits or more of bandwidth, but I am happy with HSPA+ for now. For myself, the closest thing to a deal breaker is no removable storage.
When multi-core processors first became widely available, I recall a study that showed that anything over 8 cores was counterproductive.
Every operating system that I use has more than 8 separate processes active at any given time. Task switching involves serious overhead. Why does my 8 (16?) core computer constantly perform context switches to those stupid silly processes when I am trying to run something heavy? Seriously. If I am doing something that is eating up 100% of a single core's time, why does the process keep getting preempted to load any other processes at all?
No modern consumer level operating system has sane policies for using multiple cores. THAT is why more than 8 cores is pointless.
It is rear wheel drive. It is useless in the snow. front wheel drive would have been semi-doable in the snow and all wheel drive would be infinitely preferable... but no. The car is useless in the snow.:(
but I kind of like the idea of shifting the costs back to mega corporations like Google and Facebook.
What costs are you talking about? They already pay huge sums for their bandwidth. What other costs are there? Well, you have to pay for what you use. Do you want them to pay for your internet bill too?
I'm not sure if there is ANY country up for the job - hence the UN is supposed to represent everyones interests.
My understanding of the United Nations is that is NOT supposed to be a governing body. It is supposed to be a forum for governments, not people, to work out their differences. Handing control of the Internet to the UN is absurd since it is not a governing body.
Bogus. Microsoft is still massively dangerous and currently trying to be less open. The only way you got modded to +5 is by Microsoft biased folks looking to "polish" Microsoft's image. Your downplaying of the threats that Microsoft brings to the table is absurd.
Trusted Computing. The Microsoft Store. Proprietary and locked down APIs (WinRT). I can keep on going. Microsoft is essentially still a monopoly in the end-user computing area. The danger they represent can not be overstated.
(I feel stupid for responding to an anonymous coward)
Social Accountability? I guess safely being gay is right out the door then. Hm. Actually, anything that society does not approve of is gone. I love living under fundamentalist rules(sarcasm). Sex before marriage? Since I am a guy, not too much of a problem but my girlfriend... ouch. Yes, Social Accountability is a great thing.:)
I actually disagree that lack of Social Accountability is a 20th century anomaly. Anonymity started, to a certain degree, as soon as cities larger than a few hundred people started popping up. In other words, at least 5 thousand years ago.
More surveillance state. More police state. More security craze. Where is this going to stop ?
When a typical person has power, one of their greatest fears is losing that power. In other words, this will -never- stop. It will only get worse. Eventually, technology will get to the point where one person can have power over every other person.
Once there is only one person who can have power over all others, that person will realize how lonely the world is (but maybe not why). At that point, it will be suicide for the entire human race. End of Game.
Some atheists argue GNC should be baneed fom publically funded schools. CEF argues that if other activities are allowed after school hours that GNC should be allowed as well. So far the courts have mostly agreed with CEF and I tend to agree.
I agree as well. But, I have to wonder, would you also agree that various forms of Satanism could be allowed to hold meetings at the school after/before hours? It seems clear that they should be allowed to do so... If not, I would be fascinated to hear an argument against it.:)
"There is a thing called a car which is a moving vehicle powered by a series of explosions."
Rather off-topic, but just in case anyone took this too seriously: There are not supposed to be ANY explosive events in an internal combustion engine. The forces are too violent and extreme to be useful.
What really happens is that the oxygen and fuel mixture is "burned" very rapidly. The heat expands the rest of the mixture in the cylinder which pushes the piston smoothly and evenly. The rest is an exercise for engineers.:)
Erm, not quite... or else there needs to be different words available. For example: I do not believe in a god or gods. I do not disbelieve in a god or gods. I just do not know one way or the other. I am called an atheist. I have no philosophy so your assertion does not apply to me.
On a personal note, it would seem to me that it is arrogance to say yes or no without observable facts.
I would say that Valve's biggest problem will be video drivers. The kernel developers are marginalizing/excluding the proprietary drivers more and more... and the "open" drivers suck donkey balls (no insult to the hard work being done, video drivers are HARD). Linux is ultimately a dead end as fae as gaming goes. A real shame.:(
But where does consciousness come from? Where does the "soul" come from? This is where the Christians have a hard time dealing with evolution. Single celled creatures "obviously" do not have a soul. How could they evolve to have a soul? (yeah, there is no objectively clear definition for soul)
I am not saying they are correct. I am just pointing out why they (I am clearly not part of any organized religion) are having a hard time believing humans evolved from single celled creatures or even complete animals.
*sigh* There needs to be more people like you in this world. I am basing this on just this one comment of yours. I hope the rest of your comments are just as awesome (lucid, rational, fair, etc).
Hm. I would add something to your sentence though since reality is such a bitch:
4. Determine the conditions that inspire people to become--or, more importantly, support--violent extremists who threaten us and our values, and mitigate or eliminate those conditions as much as practically possible.
What did the people of Afghanistan do to us again?
FYI, the correct answer is, "not a goddamn thing we didn't do to them first."
It is not that simple. The people of Afghanistan allowed their government to directly give comfort and support to a group that directly and deliberately attacked the United States of America on more than one occasion. Just as Americans deserve the government they have, the Afghanistan people deserve the government that the Americans toppled. Just as all the Afghan women deserve to be treated like ignorant savages that are only useful for breeding purposes and should never be educated.
Yes, it really as a simple as you make it out to be. Nice isn't it?
Go home? So more terror attacks can be sponsored more easily?
They have hit American embassies (latest embassy attack not the same organization IIRC), American ships, American buildings, etc. They will not stop of their own accord.
Shall America just let them continue until there are suicide bombers in American malls too? Where is the line drawn? Should America just suck it up and withdraw entirely from the international scene? How would that work? Which country would fill the power vacuum? Would that country behave better than America has? They all seem to be rather brutish when they have power, look at England, Spain, Portugal, the Dutch, China, Persia, Mesopotamia, Egypt, any major power at all throughout all of history.
I am not saying I agree or disagree with the drone policy.
I would like to point out that what you claim is not true. The people who are being targeted are NOT protecting their homeland from invaders. At best, you could say that the people who are being targeted (mostly Pakistan based Taliban) are fighting to preserve dominance in the country (Afghanistan) next to theirs. (At worst, they are attempting to influence governments around the world through terrorism, which is supposedly why the drone strikes are happening.)
Right, just like Magellan crossed the world for "mankinds glory". Or, maybe that's just fanboy nonsense.
