Personally, I can understand how it must feel to have this buzzing drone overhead, knowing that it could fire off a missile at any moment.
I am not sure if it is better or not, but your imaginations are incorrect. You do not hear or see the drones. The only way you notice them is when the missiles hit.
On preview, I noticed that my.sig is hilariously (?!) appropriate to the conversation.
I found out that California is just as bad as Texas. It is hard to say California is worse though. An analogy: Which is worse: Being thrown into an active volcano or being thrown off of a 500 foot cliff into the ocean? Both states disenfranchise voters arbitrarily based on political motivations.
I would like to respectfully disagree here. When Americans set foot on the moon, they did it in the name of all mankind, not to America's glory. America also granted independence to the Philippines after some harsh Spanish rule. America has set the bar higher than any previous country/government anywhere, ever.
I agree that America is no longer clearing that bar as it once was and that it was never perfect. *sigh*
Our Democracy is failing. Failing Democracy can only be caused by citizens. We are failing our Democracy.
Yes, we deserve everything done to us. The super authoritarian surveillance state where everyone but about 4 thousand people are essentially indentured servants is what we deserve for allowing this to happen.
You know that is what we all want in our heart of hearts. It is everyone's most sincere wish... if we didn't want it, we would vote Demo... erm, Republi... erm. We would... um. Yeah. We deserve it because it is obviously what we want.
Seriously, it's this simple - if you have to drop down to the command line for anything, you have failed "ease of use".
I generally agree with what you said; however, this one statement is not fully correct. Permit me to restate it in what I think is the more appropriate manner:
Seriously, it's this simple - if you have to understand the underlying concepts to manipulate something, you have failed "ease of use".
I strongly suspect most people would be happy if they could just cut and paste something into the command line and have things magically work. As an example, networking. If a non-expert needs to understand routing tables and default routes and netmasks, then ease of use is a failure. It does not matter if it is manipulated through a GUI or the command line.
I suspect that ifconfig eth0 inet 192.168.1.128 netmask 255.255.255.0 is easier to paste into a command line than saying, "click on this, find the tab and then click on that, and type this in and then click on apply".
Why is the standard set at $1k? $1k is not even a single paycheck. For a professional, it is not even a quarter of a single paycheck. I can not even be bothered to wipe my own butt for a one time payout of $1k.
Seriously though, unless I were doing it for fun, I would not consider writing an app for less than $10k. If I can write it and polish it in less than 2 months, it is common garbage that any semi-literate moron could have written. My time is worth more than that.
Hm? I have been hearing that Windows 8 and Windows 8 RT are not API compatible. How will you write a C# program for both platforms? God only knows what Windows Phone 8 will look like.
When the PC stops catering to dinosaurs, it will stop catering to any users needs and will be a prison over which there is no end user control. It will essentially be a TV that constantly monitors your behavior and is connected to your bank account. Cheers.
You have to remember that the previous MS phones, Zunes and Kins weren't that bad either
I have no idea about the Zunes and Kins but I can personally guarantee you that there was far far more wrong with previous Microsoft phone operating systems than just being a year behind on tech. Windows Mobile was an absolute abortion and could not even do phone calls reliably. Seriously. A phone operating system that can not make reliable phone calls. Just wow.
And after all this crazy debate saying how there is so much eye candy you are now going that there isn't enough!
Yeah. I was hearing that too; however, I am not sure they were talking about all of the changes.
Hardware compositing on the desktop was a huge improvement. No more tearing or flickering when windows are moving, etc. etc.
The extra effects such as wobbly windows or desktop switching animations were almost free at that point; however, some people begrudged those resources.
Some of those effects were VERY useful. Drop shadows in particular seem to be very important. It is hard to argue that the minimal extra resources for drop shadows are not worthwhile but then some people will argue that even a graphical interface is too much wastage. *shrug*
I know that when it comes down to the wire, experience will win over school credentials 95% of the time
At least spray some air freshener when pulling such numbers out of your ass. I know the exact opposite that you claim to know. I have 25+ years in the work force, with 14 years specializing in what I do now. Nobody cares about my experience or my successes. Your turn.
I am in a similar boat. How lucky are we? Very. I would be making twice as much now if I had even a stupid 4 year degree. With a Masters, I would be almost King of the World. As it is, I languish at barely 6 significant figures.
The decision makers decided that the proper filter is a minimum of a 4 year degree. Either get the degree or suffer.
Hm. There is a level at which all humans are equal. The mental level is definitely not one of them. Perhaps the person you are responding to was referring to the mental level (what the article is about) rather than at some societal level. Recognizing differences is not arrogance.
On the other hand, even if the parent poster was certain of their superiority, that does not necessarily mean that they are incapable of acting professionally which would successfully hide that bone-deep arrogance.
I have an 8way (16?) machine with 24 gigabytes of RAM. With Windows Server 2008 R2 and Hyper V, I can not run more than 2 VMs without noticeable lag. I hope you are using some other technology.
Of course Nokia -could- save itself. Will it? I doubt it. The whole network connection/configuration stuff remained crappy and unintuitive for years. If that can not change, then they are incapable of taking a deep look, reassessing, and changing themselves. I really should be shorting Nokia stock. Sad.
(I used Netscape's webserver once, and found it was pretty clunky compared to Apache even in those days).
The real problem with the Netscape webserver is that it gave absolutely no error messages. There was no way to troubleshoot anything that was going wrong with it. I suspect they removed all error messages so that the webserver would appear to be better than it was. Anyone who had to work with the damned thing suffered dearly for those surface appearances.
Don't sign up. When they see the lack of custom - they will rethink the idea/deals.
Yeah. That worked really well for ISDN lines in the USA. ISDN -never- became popular. Even when I was buying my first cable modem (1.5Mbps) in San Diego for $60/month, a 128k ISDN line was still abusively priced at about $1k/month.
Not buying at the outrageous price just means being satisfied with the lower tier of service. "They" will wait forever.
When my son is 3 years old, he'll be on a leash at an amusement park
I understand where you are coming from... but ugh. I have a violent internal reaction any time I see those harnesses. I have raised two children so far. My reaction if they get lost? Fuck it. Darwinism in action. I will do my best to ensure they do not get lost. I will turn over every stone in my search for them. At the end of the day, if they are dead, they are dead.
Needless to say, both children learned very early that they were just as responsible for staying near me as I was to keep track of them. I have never had any issues. Now that one of them is a full adult and the other on the cusp of adulthood, they are both self-sufficient and able to take care of themselves... and they still love me dearly.
(Some children just can not be treated that way. I assume that such children are defective in some way. Any average child should have no problems.)
Oh. One final point of reference: I ran away from home before I was 3 years old and made it several miles away. Hunger drove me back home after dark.
I mean..really? Not only was she actually there watching them....and got arrested even after explaining that...
I would have been proud and unrepentant to be arrested like that. I would have loved to say, "Fuck you", to the judge as well. It is a shame that my youngest is now 15 since I will not get a chance to tell society to take their gilded cages for children and go fuck themselves with them.
Now guess what in the process of trying to make things better sometimes often mistakes are made. So you can just be a whiny and say how bad it is and you say back on older technologies.
I have no problems with experimentation. I do kind of have a problem with moving the mouse needlessly around a 30 inch 2560x1600 non touchscreen monitor. I am guessing such a usage scenario was not thought of. I am thinking that interface designers should be allowing a fallback mode in case their wonderful new ideas do not pan out properly.
/me looks penetratingly at the Gnome devs as well as the Microsoft devs and then looks at the CAPTCHA again. *sigh*
The rule of thumb is: if you're doing a repetitive, braindead job, you're doing it wrong.
You are so very correct here. I have ran into numerous situations in my professional life where I was thinking to myself, "Oh. My. God. Are you guys seriously working in that way?!".
Oh, concerning your sig:
"It's too bad that stupidity isn't painful." - Anton LaVey
Stupidity -is- painful. The stupid people just live with the pain... but your sig is apropos concerning scripting.:)
You're assuming people are dumbasses that can't strive for higher things if they have the freedom and resources. They aren't. Most people just grew up to assume being stupid is cool and that they could feel entitled to get everything pre-chewed and wrapped in 10 miles of idiot padding. They can do much more, if they have to or want to.
Personally, I can understand how it must feel to have this buzzing drone overhead, knowing that it could fire off a missile at any moment.

Just to be helpful, it is clique, not clic. I waited to post this so only you would see it. I am not trying to be a grammer (sic) nazi. ;)

while showing a generic background (it's now the grey linen on iOS, can't remember what it used to be)
A checkerboard pattern of alternating light grey/dark grey. (gray?)
