  1. Re:Therein lies the problem on Running a Website from Your Prison Cell · · Score: 1

Prison will be my replacement for Social Security since there will be nothing left when I become old enough to start drawing from my Social Security fund. Back in the 80s, I heard people from the government saying what a waste it was to have all that Social Security money sitting there doing nothing. It would be better to let the government spend it now and replace it later. They gave all sorts of good reasons why this should be, but I, as a young child, knew exactly what would happen... and it has. So do not make prisons too horrible. They are how I (and many other poor people) plan to retire.

I feel fairly certain that Apple paid a lot of money to Slashdot for advertising. Is that evil? I do not think so. I just bought a 17 inch powerbook because I kept hearing how they could run most of the software that I ran under a linux based system with the obvious advantage of a killer GUI (cue grammar nazi rant). I suppose I could have waited a bit longer for xorg to work more magic, it is looking pretty hot right now with xdamage and the compositing manager.

My premise is that I think advertising on Slashdot helped Apple hit such incredible numbers.

you own an xp pro cd. your friend gives you a burned copy of xp pro with a cd key that is not the same as the one you have. you do not use your copy of xp anywhere. you install from the burned cd.

is what you have done illegal?
what if you used your cd key instead?
what if you installed from your cd but used the cd key from the burned disk (but not the software)?

i am thinking ALL of those scenarios are against the License and could therefore be deemed illegal. what reasonable person would think any of the above situations are illegal or unethical?

Help me understand here. It seems that gist of your argument is that restrictions on running servers etc. are ok because they facilitate piracy. Furthermore it is not sufficient that many (but not a majority) find uses for running servers that have NOTHING to do with anything illegal.

That's not what I'm saying, the most cursory examination of my argument would demonstrate that. If the overwhelming majority of internet media sharing was personal home videos and legally-traded music, this wouldn't be an issue.

Honestly, do you see what I am seeing in your argument?

What a way to start. :( Do you know what is even worse? I won't even receive my powerbook until AFTER Tiger is released to the public. (shipping times to Iraq are looooonnnnng)

the problem with people paying for software for linux is that it would take a LOT of work to make an app that is better than one that already exists and it would have to let ME be in control. i can easily see a corp making an app that is better than an equivalent open source app, if only because of polish... but i simply can NOT see a for-profit corp allowing me to fully control that software.
