I agree, Mulberry is a piece of shit. Campus here tried to shove it down everone's throats, nobody liked it at all. The IT dept finally decided to sack it this year.

  2. Re:Games are the key... on Return of the Mac · · Score: 1

Some of us do a good part of our "decompressing" infront of a screen when we aren't coding or working on problem sets, placing gaming at a #2 or #3 after all. Gamer and Geek are not mutually exclusive, it's only recently that they've become quite different things.

"Why not have a Mac too?" Because it costs money. Sure, most of us do collect hardware for the sake of it, but monetary concerns and getting the most out of your system(s) is also important. I'd buy ever sort of machine out there if I could, but I'm not made of money just like most people aren't.

You are being rather unfair and downright pretentious/self righteous: "real geeks", "a guy like you". Get off your high horse, some of us "real geeks" out there like to stay up on games.

The CGI is definitely the strong point. The sound ontop of the lighting and film quality is what got me (that sort of hollow dead echo in every noise made, as if it were recorded in my basement). All the non space scenes had the same atmosphere and film/sound quality of a soap opera or Dr. Who. It looks professional... but low budget.

  5. They didn't sue the Beatles on Grand Theft Auto Led Teen to Kill · · Score: 1

In 1968 Charles Manson brutally killed several people inspired by the lyrics of the Beatles. To him the entire White Album was a set of cryptic instructions to kill.

The relatives of the victims didn't sue the Beatles, nobody even thought to do so. 36 years later video game makers and retailers are being sued for being responsible for murder.

Fact of the matter is that the kid had some rather deep psychological problems. "Life is a video game. You've got to die sometime" does not suggest a firm grasp on reality. If it had not been GTA, it would have been something else that the kid confused with the real world. People who are ill can seize anything and use it to justify murder in their mind.

Preventing things like this cannot be prevented by removing violence from videogames, but by catching signs of mental illness early and getting individuals treated before they hurt someone.

...and if you don't like the FAQ response regarding Linux and Mac support let 'em know.

funny... because if I remember straight, a few days ago much of /. was clamoring that OSS shouldn't be ported to windows because it hurt OSS. But now we should be porting windows apps to linux?

"Free Software desktop applications on Windows represent a no-win situation for Open Source[...]"
-Open Source on Windows - Boon or Bane for Linux?

Am I the only one who sees this as a little hypocritical?

One of the first things I did was give it a try. Doesn't work still. Trillian to Trillian is fine. Trillian (basic... so maybe pro fixes this) to AIM is another story. AIM just isn't unicode freindly I fear. The only time that I have seen Japanese displayed correctly by AIM was when it was sent to me by someone using Adium X.

If anybody knows how to get Japanese to work correclty on AIM plz say something.

which is sad, because dropping backwards compatability for the sake of getting rid of all the hodgepoge of the X86's ISA was one of its main strong points. It wasn't just a beefed up 8080 with poorly designed instructions due to the changes needed to make x86 modern, but still backward compatable. For once Intel was starting from a somewhat clean slate.

  13. effect on gaming on Mouse May be Replaced by "Nouse" · · Score: 1

Just think of how that would affect FPS gaming. Accuracy wouldn't be based on being able to point at the target, but being able to simply look at it and follow it. Guess accusations of using aimbots would spike.
