You give the people too much credit. Keeping up with the Joneses will take care of adoption of HD-DVD. People who shop at Walmart are just the kind of people who care about looking rich at any cost.
The rt2500 driver is plainly shit. It was inherited from GPLed source from the Ralink team (I suppose we can at least thank them for the inital code). It doesn't support any "standard" interfaces. No WPA supplicant support or wireless extensions, etc.
There has been a complete rewrite underway for about 2 years now to use these standard interfaces and it hasn't really gone anywhere. I thank Mark Wallis and such for their hard work, but they don't have the time to work on this driver. You can try it out by installing rt2x00-source. I've tried it on Debian several times and I can't get the thing to work.
No argument from me there. I was stating the facts as they are.
Cable lines are owned by the cable company, so in order to implement that plan the states or feds would have to use imminent domain to buy those lines and then regulate them.
I'd be very happy with government-owned lines with equal access being manditory. This ILEC/CLEC stuff is a joke. I've found myself victim to using a CLEC for DSL. When the physical lines were bad, I had to wait for the ILEC to take its sweet old time to get service restored.
I fancied myself a Windows "power user" and then GNU/Linux was foisted upon me because of a hardware crash. My backup system wasn't good enough to run XP, so I tried Red Hat 9. It certainly was a bitch, but I leaned GNU/Linux by doing the same thing I did when I was learning Windows: poke and prod at the system and see what changed. Doing is the best way of learning.
Don't really worry too much about a specific distro. I went from RH9 to Fedora Core to Ubuntu to Debian over the span of about 4 years. Once you learn enough, you can pick up any distro without too much hassle.
My best advice is to pick a distro and dual boot with XP/Vista. Every day try to use your GNU/Linux distro a bit more each day. Be sure to try to fiddle with settings. Just make sure you have a backup ready for any important data. For awhile there, I was reinstalling the OS weekly. Don't be afraid to experiment.
I worked on an advisory board regarding cable regulation. Here are the facts (Ohio-centric):
Any cable company can come in and negotiate with the city to use their rights-of-way. You would expect the cable company would have to pay to use the government property right? Or are you in the habit of just giving large businesses whatever they want? Part of the agreement to use this property is customer service standards as well as other quality assurance issues. In fact, if you have an unresolved problem that the cable company won't do anything about, go to your next cable advisory board meeting; they'll be glad to help. Your cable company will get on the ball because they don't want to lose that contract.
That being said, most cities have a natural monopoly with respect to cable. Most cities only have 1 provider because a second provider would take a loss if they put in the infrastructure. Think of it this way: would you like to be the only widget salesman in the area or would you like to compete with lots of widget salesmen?
Don't take my word for it. Go to your next city council meeting and find out what one would have to do to offer alternative cable service in your area.
Not really. At the federal level I'm libertarian, but at the state level I'm downright socialist. I'm for socialized medicine, smoking bans, increased taxation for the upper 90%, etc. Federally, I'm for an abolishment of the income tax, increased power to the states, abolishment of the Dept of Education, etc.
So I'm hardly a libertarian. I just believe in a plain reading of the Constitution, which specifies a limited role of the feds, with all other powers reserved to the states.
In an odd way I agree with you. I know there are certain people I could name of the top of my head I don't want having kids. The only problem is if you allow any body to have that power, there is a nonzero chance that you might be on the "you can't have kids" list. This is why I don't want anyone to have that power; i.e. you can't give the government the power to ban "bad speech" without giving them the power to ban "good speech".
In fact, my politics starts from the principle that the best government is one where I am the absolute dictator of the Earth. Of course, this is unlikely to happen. So the next best government is one where no one person, group, or organization has such powers, because I know I wouldn't like to live under an absolute dictatorship. This is why I'm a staunch federalist (I actually prefer the self-made term "states' rights liberal"). Decentralization to the lowest point gives people more freedom to live under a government they agree with. I want James Inhofe to have as little say in my life as possible, just as I'm sure conservatives want Dennis Kucinich to have as little say in their lives as possible.
Pardon my tangent, but I think it was sort of relevant:-)
We all know that on matters of copyright, neither party is very good. Do you know why? It's because no one votes based on the candidates' positions on copyright law.
Lets not bullshit ourselves here. When it comes down to D vs. R here in 2008, we aren't going to be voting on who has the best copyright platform. In fact, I'll be surprised if copyright even comes up once as an issue in any debate. I'll even be surprised (but less so) if any major candidate has an official position on their website regarding copyright.
Mortgage loan terms were limited to 50 percent of the property's market value, with a repayment schedule spread over three to five years and ending with a balloon payment.
I can't watch Casino Royale on my PC. I tested it under Debian Sid using both Totem and Mplayer. xdvdshrink crapped out as did "dd if=/dev/hdc of=casinoroyale.iso".
My resolution was to fire up Pan and head over to a.b.m.divx. Once again, paying customers get the shaft.
I'm looking at buying a home with my soon-to-be wife. The only houses that are even close to being affordable in the region are those that have serious structural problems and need a decent amount of work. Even with an FHA loan, we're going to have a hard time making payments along with our student loans.
I recently read that in the 20s and 30s home loans usually had a 5 year term. Of course, now anything less than a 15-year term is rare with 30 and even 50-year mortgages becoming common. I'll be damned if I'm going to be paying on my house when I'm retired. But then again, at this rate I probably won't be retired when I'm in my mid-70s.
It is no laughing matter that our standard of living is falling and no one seems to give a damn.
Its really quite simple. If the group wants to use the street in such a way that will cause traffic problems, they need to get a permit. That way traffic can be rerouted and notices can be posted that Main St. will be closed. If they don't use the street, there is no need for a permit. Sidewalks are fine. Similarly, if pedestrian traffic is affected, they should need a permit.
If they have no permit and the demonstrators are causing traffic problems, start arresting them for jaywalking. Charter some buses and send them off to the pokey.
First, you don't know me so you don't know if I've been on the receiving and of any such language.
Second, I use the words "fag", "queer", "homo", etc. every so often. When I use them, my intent is not to offend. So we agree there. Similarly, if I wanted, I could use the word "nigger" in an inoffensive context. If my intent is not to offend, then it shouldn't be offensive.
In the context, Imus had no intent to offend. Therefore him being fired is out of line.
Well they can break the alliance as soon as they get voting reform. Basically, all the minor parties who signed on to the agreement would be single-issue parties until what they wanted got passed. If enough get elected to the House, we could be looking at a minority government situation where the alliance held the balance of power.
I know of Imus's colored history with respect to using "racist" language. My point is that he's a shock jock, and making controversial statements is his job. He uses such slurs as an act. I don't believe for a second that Don Imus is a racist.
Hell, I don't even really like the guy all that much. His show is usually pretty lame anyway. I just think that getting fired for basically doing his job is a bit much.
People are always going to say things in order to get media attention. We need to figure out whether or not they're actually racists or just trying to be controversial. If his intent was to offend and degrade those women, then he should be fired. But, by the context of the remark, he obviously just botched a joke.
I'm don't understand what you're saying here. We should force people to speak "white" English? What kind of white English? The New England variant? Midwestern? Southern? I vote for Midwestern, myself.
I'm of the opinion that the separate dialect exists because of poor schooling facilities for blacks until just recently, especially in the South. I think its still in use and will continue to be in use as a way of distinguishing themselves among the masses. Indeed, as I think you're trying to say, some people promote AAVE (ebonics) as a distinct language that should be taught as standard in some areas where it is widely spoken. Some even go as far to say teaching black youth standard American English is robbing them of their culture.
I hope you can clarify as I don't know if I'm agreeing with you or not.
No, this is the nanny-state "why can't we all get along" PC left that conservatives like to think is all that makes up the Democratic party.
This is manufactured outrage pure and simple. No one really thinks Imus had an intent to cause anyone grief. Al Sharpton and Jessie Jackson need their names to be in the headlines at all times because they're media whores; that's their job. And of course the white PC left had to be just as outraged to prove to everyone that they aren't racists.
Imus was was just making an observation that the Rutgers team was mostly black and looked like gang members due to their tattoos. He phrased it in a politically incorrect manner, which is what got him canned. I believe it was George Carlin who said that language is neutral. It is intent that makes something offensive or not. Imus's intent was to make the point that the Rutgers team was more butch than the Tennessee players in a humorous way.
Of course, as you say if black people use those words in a derogatory manner, society gives them a pass (in fact, popular black culture seems to encourage their use). Either words are ok for everyone to use or they are ok for no one to use. Double standards are bullshit, plain and simple.
I'm white. I'm liberal. I'm not a racist. I thought it was funny. Anyone who was seriously offended by his remarks needs to grow up.
Some have been calling for a minor party alliance in order to just get to 5% and/or use that as a way to push approval voting, IRV, or some other fairer voting system.
You give the people too much credit. Keeping up with the Joneses will take care of adoption of HD-DVD. People who shop at Walmart are just the kind of people who care about looking rich at any cost.

Err...mod me down. Maybe I should RTFS every once in awhile.

In the same vein, would you like to live in a society where only the rich have the resources to reproduce?
Come on, Doc, you can do better.

Criminals will break the law. Therefore laws against gun ownership make the situation such that law-abiding citizens cannot defend themselves.
When I heard about the shootings, that was the first thing I thought: It's too bad more students weren't armed.

See what you think. As always, context is everything.
Nappy-headed hoe.
It was "racist" because Imus is white and he called black people hoes.
