I think this is a good case that highlights online gaming addiction and how it needs to be classified as a disease. "Detox" clinics, etc. should be set-up in order to prevent this type of behavior. It should be treated similarly to alcoholism.

When people start getting that upset at things that happen in a fantasy world, then professional counseling should not be far behind.

IMO, stealing from Billy G should carry a lesser offense than stealing from the people who beg out in front of the library. In fact, I claim that stealing $100 from a millionaire should carry the same penalty as stealing $.10 from a thousandaire.

Stealing is only morally correct when there is no other recourse. Stealing money in order to preserve onesself is morally correct. It only makes sense to steal from those who will miss it least.

    Not quite.

The president has 10 days to either sign, ignore, or veto a bill. In all but the latter case, the bill becomes law. If, after 10 days he has not signed the legislation, and congress is adjourned, it is not signed into law. This is known as a pocket veto. Otherwise, it does indeed become law w/o his approval.

The school definitely needs your SSN.

If I'm not mistaken, you do not have to give out your SSN to any agency that will not use it for Social Security related stuff. That is, the only people who need to know your SSN is your employer (for payroll taxes) and the SS Dept (along with the IRS). Since your school does not need your SSN, you don't have to give it to them.

Perhaps this was the original idea, but isn't that way in practice. I was always under the impression that it was on the books in the way I described.

  19. Re:Secret on Berkeley Grads' Identity Data Stolen · · Score: 3, Insightful

You raise good points, but what must happen is that people need to be more careful with their personal information. Most people gladly give away their phone number to Radio Shack, Best Buy, etc. at the drop of a hat. I'll bet you ~50% of people would give their SSN to any brick and mortar retailer (but not those hackers on the internets) if asked to do so. Most of them don't know that they can refuse to give out any of their personal information (of course, the cost may be not being able to do business with that store), but probably would so they wouldn't be put-out by having to go to another store.

Convenience trumps all with security being a close second and privacy a distant third.

Sometimes theft is ethical. One instance that most people will agree with is when someone is starving and steals food. Another is the theft of medicine if it will save your life. I think most people would agree that if 'substance A' will save your life, you are in the right to take it if you cannot pay.

Of course, downloading music is not a life or death matter, and I don't claim that it is. My point is that the world is not as black and white as you wish it to be.
